Sizzle Pie

I go to Sizzle Pie regularly, so it’s probably about time I did a review. To add to the 4,397 other SP reviews on Unilocal.
Being vegan, I am a little biased to like SP because they have done a supreme job with their vegan pizza offerings. Every time I’m in it seems like half the line is ordering vegan slices, and the vegan pies in the case that they take slices from seem to sell faster than the vegetarian and meat pies. They put the vegan pies on the top level of the case, too, so it’s not just a pizza place offering a vegan option just for the market; SP seems dedicated to delicious vegan pizza.
My go-​to pizza used to always be the Steve Caballero, which is basically the vegan sausage-​and-​pepperoni pie. They stopped using Daiya on it at some point, though, so it wasn’t as good as it used to be. Still good, but not the fantasticness as before. So that led me to branch out and try other vegan combos, and I’m glad I did.
I like most of the vegan pie combos, but the hands-​down winner is Buffalo 666. I had tried jackfruit before and was not impressed, so I was hesitant to try this one. But the way they shred the jackfruit is spot on, and it adds to the flavor combination nicely instead of being a distraction of the one thing on the pizza that you don’t really like. In addition to using a non-​traditional protein, the really inspired components are vegan ranch sauce and a tangy bbq sauce. This is an example of how much thought and effort SP is putting into creating their pies; people saying «it’s just ok» in their reviews should go back to Pizza Hut or Domino’s and then see how above-​par other pizza places are…
You have to order a whole pie if you want the Buffalo 666. The (vegan) slices in the case seem to be a rotation of daily specials not on the menu and the Spiral Tap. The Spiral Tap is decent, but I go to SP for their original combos. On my last visit I tried slices of Dr. Deakenstein, which was really good. I can’t remember the exact combo, but I think it was tofu cheese, vegan sausage crumbles, and something similar to bbq sauce. Whatever it was I ate it with a quickness because it was so good. The daily-​special slices I got on previous visits were also excellent.
Other vegan standouts are Apocalypse Dudes (sometimes you actually want to eat vegetables on pizza) and New Maps Out of Hell, with its balance of basil cashew sauce and soy curls. They do brunch pizzas as well, and Drugs Benedict is outstanding. I’m usually not there early enough for that, though.
Recently they started carrying a local vegan raw cheesecake. I tried a slice of the peanut butter and chocolate on my last visit. It seemed a little expensive (I think it was $ 6.95), but after I ate it it was totally worth it. Not too sweet, and for being raw it didn’t taste like it (I’m indifferent to raw foods, not a huge fan but they’re not totally disgusting). The slice seemed deceptively small for the price, but after eating the whole thing myself I could see two people sharing it and still getting enough. I will get it again for sure.
The seating area at this location is basic and no frills, mostly because the seating area is smaller than the East location. There’s a jukebox with some heavier selections, and there’s always some choice music being played when I’ve been there. It’s loud (and part of their «brand» or whatever), but not over-​blasted to where you can’t hear yourself think. I’ve rocked out to everything from thrash metal to Massive Attack’s «Teardrop» there (although when that was played one of the staff was wearing a Cocteau Twins shirt, so I don’t think it was a coincidence).
I love when people complain about the service. Every single time I’ve been to this location the people working the counter have been really friendly and super efficient. The person at the register is usually willing to trade a few laughs with me. You wait in line to order, you give your order to the person at the register, they make your pie or heat up your slices, and they call your number when it’s ready. If you think you got bad service then maybe that’s a sign that somewhere along that line they realized you’re kind of an asshole and treated you accordingly, since there’s really nothing that can go wrong with the process on their end.
I’ve gotten delivery a few times as well. The pies arrive hot, even if it is a wait sometimes. But they’re good about being honest with the ETD (estimated time of delivery). If it’s going to be 90 minutes they will tell you it’s going to be 90 minutes; they don’t say it will be there in a half hour and keep you waiting.
People saying the slices are expensive have obviously never been to NYC. The slices are very reasonably priced, especially for the size and the toppings you get. I never understand when people say it’s expensive; if you only want to pay $ 1 for something that’s what Taco Bell is for.
SP also does some really good local charity stuff, that they don’t point out and say «look what we’re doing!».

Haven’t been here in a long time and stopped by for lunch a few days ago. Pizza is still amazing. Think crusts and loaded with flavor.
Love the special they have: a slice and a salad for $ 7. Salads are huge. Slices are thin crusts– no guilt eating here.
Nice variety of vegetarian pizzas as well.

I did really enjoy my pizza here! It was very tasty, of a thin crust type. Great value deal $ 7.00 for a huge slice of your choice of pizza and a huge portion of salad of your choice. It’s a very filling meal.
The place has a cool vibe to it. There is a good amount of seating. The staff works efficiently enough. Our order didn’t take too long to come out.
They serve a variety of beers, that is always a nice option when you have an obsessive pizza and beer craving!
My husband and I return to Portland tomorrow for another week stay. I just might do a yummy retake!

Sizzle pie was the last stop on our food tour of Portland. I don’t remember if this one was on tv, but it looks like a Portland treasure so while we were waiting for the Amtrak we walked on over for Happy Hour. Cheap pizza, good taste. Nice after a night of drinking!

Sizzle pie is good and their Vegan options are a plenty but both of types that I have had were just okay. Most recently I had the Angel of Doom and that one was again meh. Good but nothing spectacular.
Service is sub-​par even for the typical help yourself service. But hey that’s all good. Nothing goes into the tip jar then.
They do have a lot more variety normally but unfortunately I have only been after a long night and at 3am in the morning.
So hopefully I’ll be back and actually come at a normal hour haha.

Great pizza worthy of New York. Add a draft brew and I couldn’t be happier. Nor could you. Grab a slice of cheese pizza with its cornmeal dusting, add some toppings and be comforted. Hot. Appropriately chewy, crunchy and gooey. Eat. Then repeat.

I was impressed by this place. I stopped in for a slice late at night (love that they’re open until 3 or 4 am) and got a slice of pepperoni. It was flavorful, thin and foldable. The cheese was high quality and stringy. The atmosphere was cozy and interesting music was playing. The only things i wish were different would be that the cornicione was thicker and they had granulated garlic instead of the garlic dust, but oh well.

During my three-​day visit to Portland, the convenience of buying inexpensive, single slices of pizza at almost any hour of the day and its proximity to Powell’s Books (across the street), allowed time for 3 visits to Sizzle Pie. I was able to have a quick single-​slice snack in between reading sessions at Powell’s one day, a two-​slice dinner of different topping combinations on another, and a post midnight snack before heading back to where I was staying the last night. It was additionally nice to also be able to choose between ordering and eating quickly at a standing counter or having a sit-​down meal.
I love that they have a nice selection of interesting, non-​traditional vegan and vegetarian pies available since I’m pescatarian and don’t eat many traditional pizza toppings. The daily menu of ready-​made pies vary from day to day as well, which allowed me to try many different kinds of vegan/​vegetarian combinations on such a short visit. (You can also order your own pies.) There is also a good selection of beers and a very friendly staff.
Food: 3.5 stars, Service: 4 stars, Convenience and Variety: 5 stars

Not a bad place. Nothing special though. Their slices are really large and reasonably priced (about $ 3.50/slice). Their crust is really thin. They have pepperoni, but that’s really where the traditional flavors kind of end. Interesting toppings on their pizzas that day included yeast germ, eggplant, and vegan sausage. I got two slices to go — they weren’t bad. They do have a good amount of vegan/​vegetarian options though! Not really for me, but, you know, not a bad place for herbivores. :)
The floor was randomly sticky though. Unsure why. Other than that, A-​OK.

This is my favorite pizza place in all of Portland. I always get a slice of vegan pizza with a rabbit side salad. Sometimes the vegan options are a little strange such as I think it’s blasphemy to put pineapple on a pizza. But when they get it right, it’s really right. The notta ricotta ones always get me everytime, so super delicious! I prefer the West Burnside location to the East Burnside location, I find the staff to be incredibly kind and helpful when I go.
There was one instance I ordered a specific kind of pizza but it turns out the person before me actually got the last slice. The guy working there apologized profusely, but it really wasn’t a big deal, I just chose another kind. When he brought it out to me, he’d filled up a punch card for a free slice next time because he felt so bad. I thought this was excellent customer service, especially since I wasn’t really upset!

Sizzle Pie was cool, I got tips from the locals that it was a good pizza joint. Nothing to rave about IMO. The service was really friendly, and the pizza was ok. We got the Don Caballero: pepperoni, sausage, green peppers, and onion. They have a great selection of local brews if you wanted some with your pizza.
They delivered everything to our hotel, but the wait time was ridiculous… something along a 90 minute mark. We weren’t all that hungry so the wait didn’t bother us, but just something to keep in mind before you get hangry.

Easy going spot to grab a slice of thin crust NY style pizza for a quick eat and they’re open late. I always get a slice of their D-​Beat which is just plain cheese and it always hits the spot. You line up and order, pay, grab a seat/​table, and they will call you when your slice is ready for pick-​up. They have two locations on each side of Burnside, east and west. And if you’re in the Moda Center for a game, make sure to grab a slice there too! Their West Burnside location has the infamous Food Pyramid wall painted on the outside.
They have a pizza punch card and after 11 punches, your 12^th slice is free! So go and get your pizza on (I was a pizza for Halloween once so I take pizza seriously and pizza is life).

I love pizza and am always excited when I find new pizzas to try. This is one of the best pizzas I’ve had in a while.
Before I continue I have to say that the staff was super friendly and helpful.
Prices are reasonable, and the slices are pretty big. Right balance of sauce, dough, and toppings. As soon as we started eating there was a moment of silence haha, that just meant the pizza was good.
Next time I’m in Portland I for sure will visit Sizzle Pies again. I can’t wait for them to open a location in Seattle.

Five stars for dine-​in experience and their single slices. One star for delivery and customer service.
Side note: For some reason, their whole pies are made differently than their dine-​in, per slice pizza. Whole pies are doughier and the crust is much bigger whereas the dine-​in pizza is thin and crispy. I’ve had whole pies/​delivery 3 times now, and the crust has been as big as an inch and a half. That’s, like a third of the pizza! And so different from their dine-​in pizza that I felt misled.
Main issue: My first time getting the pizza delivered, I wasn’t asked for my credit card when I made the pizza order. No problem, I assumed that I’d be able to pay with a credit card when I received the order. I got out my checkbook just in case they couldn’t take a credit card. When the delivery driver got here, he was flustered that I wasn’t ready with cash (you have to warn people that they have to pay with cash IN ADVANCE, buddy) and he got upset that he was illegally parked outside and he was going to have to wait for me to sort out the payment problem.
I offered to write him a check, he declined.
I offered to call in a credit card payment when I get back inside and he can just take off since he’s so worried about getting a ticket, he declined. Said he couldn’t leave me with pizza without collecting payment. I completely understood.
I offered to have him take the pizza back and I’ll order another one and pick it up myself. He declined.
Then he stares at me with frustration because he doesn’t like any of my suggestions.
Uh, it’s not my job to ensure payment is collected for your deliveries. That would be somebody in your company’s job.
In a huff, he gives me the pizza and leaves.
When I call Sizzle Pie to give them my credit card number for the pizza, the woman that answers says she’s the one that took my order and «either I hung up early or she hung up early» before she could ask me for my credit card number. Translation: She forgot to ask me for my credit card number and she doesn’t want to cop to it. She could have always called me back on my cell, whose number I see printed on my pizza receipt if I hung up before she had a chance to charge me.
So, TL;DR: Delivery order taker fucks up by not asking me for my credit card information and then later not admitting that it was her error. Delivery driver gets mad at me that this happened. I got yelled at for ordering pizza.

It was really late, we were really hungry and one or more of us may have been fairly intoxicated, so I THINK we liked this place??? No, we definitely did :)
Not only were they open late (til 3 or 4 AM — which was awesome), but they serve pizza by the slice all day long (or, until they run out maybe). Most pizza places only do this at lunchtime — lame! Sometimes it’s 3 AM and you just want a sliiiice, right?
So we tried the D-​Beat (plain cheese), Ace of Spades (pepperoni), and Spiral Tap (a vegan pie with onion spread). Since it was late, they didn’t have as big of a selection for the slices and we didn’t want to order a whole pie, but I would have loved to try The Gold Ring, South of Heaven, and DIY. Spiral Tap was okay, but not amazing. I think the onion spread was a little too sweet, and I was hoping it would be saltier/​tangier. The pepperoni and cheese slices weren’t mind-​blowing, but they hit the spot.
I’d definitely hit up this place again, and maybe even try one of their breakfast pizzas!

Grabbed a slice after my visit to Powell’s because I’d heard from the natives that the pizza here is great. They have a lot of slices to choose from, and I ended up with one that had beef slices and broccoli — kinda like a stir fry on pizza. Slice was a bit expensive at $ 3.25 (or half a slice for $ 1.75) — they are large but since they are thin sliced, they aren’t quite as filling as they might first seem. I really liked it — the crust was crisp and the toppings were good. I’d like to try out some other flavors if I ever return!

This review is for delivery on a Saturday night.
I called around 7:45, the pizza arrived around 8:40. I was quoted an hour, so their delivery time was pretty accurate.
Now, onto the pizza. My husband and I are what you might call pizza people, both of us being Italian and him hailing from NY. Since moving to SW, we have tried most of the big names… Pizzicato, schmizza, hot lips, etc.
This is a pretty clear winner for us. Good sauce to cheese ratio, thin but not too floppy, good foldability, this pizza really has everything. The mozz they use is super fresh tasting, and the dough is fluffy and chewy. I’m pretty impressed.
The problem I have with this pizza (and all pizza in downtown, quite frankly) is the price. Somewhere around $ 27 for a large cheese pie delivered, with tip? No way. That’s crazy.
Unfortunately, that’s the reality of the pizza around here. If you’re looking to pay a decent price, go to domino’s or papa murphy’s I guess.

Solid pizza in the downtown area in Portland. I flew into Portland late Thursday night and we were looking for places to grab food and Sizzle Pie was open (they’re open late!). We ordered two pies — one cheese and one with jalapeño/​pineapple. Since it would take a bit, we checked into our rental house and a couple of us walked down to pick it up.
The waitress/​cashier was really sweet and nice. She talked to us for a bit and gave us some recommendations as we told her we were from out of town. She gave us plates and threw in some Parmesan cheese and crushed red pepper packets.
When we got home, we devoured the pizza, which was pretty good. It’s thin, but not thin-​crust like, and there wasn’t a lot of sauce. However, the cheese and dough didn’t overpower the taste of the pizza or make it dry. Everything worked pretty well together and you can’t go wrong with that. Overall, a solid find and definitely a great late night option for those who need it. They sell pizza by the slices too.

So this pizza place is just that, a pizza place. You walk in and they have some premade pizzas rating there for you that they just pop into the oven and warm up for you. What’s cool is that they have both pizza slices of pizza cups. A slice is a lot larger than a cut and a cut is half the size of a slice.
For this particular pizza sizzle joint they have a very small seating area and then line area for ordering pizza is kind of squished. So when we were actually waiting for a pizza we just waited outside but it was small enough so that you could still here inside.
The whole place was kind of grungy but that’s what it is and it’s great pizza. But it’s also super thin crust thin bread pizza. I’m a cheese pizza person and the cheese was great. The Hawaiian was pretty good too and that’s all I tried at this location.
