Shilo Inn Rose Garden

Very basic accommodations. In need of upgrades. Tv’s are old and many channels scroll. For 20% more you could get a 5 star hotel. I have at budget hotels that we we more up to date. Breakfast bar needs improvement The only reason I gave then 2 instead of 1 star was the staff was friendly. Decently would not stay here again. Save your money.

Very accomodating, internet and computers were down due to flooding. Room was clean and a little small. They provided extra blanket on request. Thin walls with noise from other rooms. Great price for what is available close by.

In general, the rooms were clean and the location was great. My frustration came with the customer service. We were traveling from Seattle and the forecast implemented a flood warning for several rivers near the I5 corridor. Since we had 6 reservations, I had called Shilo Inn to simply ask if there was a refund policy for bad weather conditions that were out of our control. My valid question was met with annoyance and irritation. I was basically told that they were «completely sold out» and to refund that many reservations would be ridiculous. Remember, I was simply asking, not demanding anything.
When we arrived, the receptionist greeted us with, «Oh, you’re the group…» And proceeded to tell me that the rooms were not paid for. I told her that our manager (at least from what he told me) already paid for the rooms with the company credit card. She said there was no record of payment, but she had the credit card on file. I said that the rooms need to be charged to that card specifically. She proceeded to inform me that there is a $ 50 deposit on each room. I told her to charge it to my card. We verbally agreed it was $ 300 total. She confirmed this. She told me that she was unable to do it at one time and needed to swipe my card 6 times. After 3 hours of driving in horrible weather, I was willing to do anything to get to my room. This receptionist was poorly trained, extremely lethargic and stumbled through the check in process. Also, at this time, I learned that they were NOT sold out whatsoever as people were inquiring if they had available rooms. The receptionist’s response was, «Oh yeah we do!» Her very brief burst of energy shocked me.
At 2 am, I received a phone call from my credit card company. They said someone had charged nearly $ 200 (rate/​tax/​deposit/​fees) several times and wanted to know if this was valid. I walked to reception and was met with a new receptionist. After telling him my frustration, he basically gave me a lesson in hotel booking. He said the only way to charge the card was to have my boss fax the card information in and fill out a form. I kept emphasizing that the rooms should already be paid for. He said there was no record of that. I knew this had to be incorrect.
I called my manager at 2 am (!) and asked him what was going on. He informed me that he had already faxed the credit card and the rooms should be paid for. I handed the phone to the receptionist. He lifted the cash drawer and pulled several documents that were photocopies of credit cards and driver’s licenses (which really concerned me). Ours was at the very top. He apologized and said that some of the receptionists aren’t very well trained and are still very new. Yeah… I gathered that.
I will say the next morning the receptionist stayed past his shift to sort this out, but there still seemed to be a lot of confusion. We had to leave promptly for a conference. I left worrying if things would be sorted out. Several days later, my manager called to get a receipt for the credit card transaction. The receptionist said she had no idea where it was and that he would need to call at a different time. Unbelievable.

The good things: clean, location, free parking, free wi-​fi, continental breakfast included, drapes, room amenities.
The bad things: service, small, slow internet, lack of facilities.
Detail. OK – this place was chosen based on location and my refusal to pay for parking at a hotel, which limits my choices, I realize. I really like the location for what I need in Portland. The hotel is small – the halls are narrow, ceilings are 8 feet high and the room I was in (king room, no sleeper sofa) was small with a cramped bathroom. It was not the smallest room I’ve been in, but I do expect a bit at this price point. The low ceilings and narrow halls got to me; My wife is blind; so, we walk side by side as I guide her. We were unable to pass someone going in the opposite direction without some noticeable adjustment. Stairs amplified this. I do like that the room doors are inside little alcoves. I think this cut down on hall noise coming into the room.
The staff were unable to locate extra pillows, and slow to even begin the search. The check-​in was slow. The coffee was not restocked in the room. There is a small room behind the counter where the staff would stay and answer questions rather than popping up and addressing customers, this might be off-​putting to some. Also – they are not in uniform and are barely in work attire – sweats and t-​shirt!
I did like the fridge, microwave, iron, toiletry items, and coffee maker (the day it had coffee). The fridge made a little noise. The A/​C was quiet and kept us comfortable. The drapes kept the room dark when we slept in. The parking was good, but just enough; mind that there was a hill immediately upon entering the property. The Internet was easy to connect too but sluggish. Don’t anticipate streaming video and expect delays with audio.
I was able to sleep fine, but my wife was not. Partly due to the pillows and partly do to the hardness of the mattress. This is a personal preference – expect firm. The bedding was so-​so for this price point. The 3 pillows we did get on the king bed were also firm.
While I did not need it, the vending machine was out of order. We did not try the breakfast. Nor did we use the sauna. I don’t know if there was an exercise room. The Quality Inn nearby (we had to pay for parking) was better, but had a bit of an odd smell. Crown Plaza also requires a bit for parking and is a tad more expensive, but might be a better option. I might try BestWestern next, as these two brands seem to compete on the same level.
Bottom line, the hotel is tolerable for me and the negatives I pointed out were mostly expressions of preferences and nit-​picky observations. There was nothing «wrong». However, «affordable excellence» (the company’s slogan) this was not.

The room was clean… that’s the only positive comment I have for it. It was the size of a postage stamp. Because there was no chair or luggage rack, I took the lamp off the bedside table (it didn’t work anyway) and put my small suitcase on it. The wall had a hole from someone pushing the door through it. The breakfast attendant apologized for the lack of choices (apparently the delivery was several days delayed).
Being a rewards member, I expected not to be put in their smallest room. I requested that the manager call me. He has not.
I would not stay here again.

The best I can say about this place is it was not disgusting and it has free parking which was great for being in the city.
My biggest issue was just the way this place was run. I don’t think management or the staff really care much about customer service. The person working at check in couldn’t give us answers to why our reservation had been changed without notice, all she said was you can talk to the manager tomorrow.
We booked a 2 queen room for 4 people, upon check in we were told the manager had changed our reservation and put us in a king with a pull out couch. Mind you we made this reservation months in advance and checked in shortly after the official check in time so it was a bit confusing as to why the reservation would change without notice. The room change would not be a huge deal, at least we had enough beds. However it was made slightly more frustrating when everyone checking in after us were given the 2 queens even with less people in the room.
Now let’s talk about that pull out couch. Seriously one of the most uncomfortable things I have ever laid on, metal bars, springs, and part of the couch was broken. My feet fully hung over the edge of the bed which was awkward and I’m only 5’4 so it’s not as if I’m above average height. Add to that we were not provided pillows for that bed, we had to ask the front desk twice for more and we’re given ‘the last two in the place’ she brought us the pillows and covers separately so we got to see the stains on the pillows I’d rather pretend did not exist.
Our chair and a couch cushion had some suspicious white stains on them, I pretended it was from something other than what my intuition was telling me it was. There was also a stain on the carpet by the sink that appeared to be blood in the opinion of the four of us. The room smelled a bit musty when we first got in but that went away when we opened the window and got some fresh air. The bathroom has zero room, you either have to straddle the toilet or practically stand in the tub to open/​close the bathroom door.
They offer a free continental breakfast, it consisted of packaged muffins, danishes, and instant oatmeal. For beverages there was coffee but no creamer and bottles of juice. I know free breakfast isn’t usually glamorous but considering the multiple hotels I’ve recently stayed in that had fresh hot waffles as part of the free breakfast at least a few less sugar filled options would have been nice. I’d have been happy with cereal.
Overall the place wasn’t gross and seemed safe but that isn’t enough for me to return. Customer service is important to me when paying for a decent hotel and this place is seriously lacking.

My kids and I stay here regularly. For the price it has a great location and is always clean. It’s no Four Seasons by any means, but for under $ 100 a night across the street from the Rose Garden and right on the street car line it’s great.

Terrible! I’ve never experienced such horrible customer service.
I booked our room online a few weeks in advance only to show up and find out they had over booked the rooms and we no longer had one. No apologies, just that they were relocating us to another location a 20 minute drive out of town! The whole reason I had booked this place is it’s close proximity to the downtown core.
Eventually, they agreed to cancel that reservation and refund my money.
Steer clear of this place, there are other options in the area that will take much better care of you for a similar rate.

Older facility and more motel like. Slight musty smell, but otherwise seemed clean and adequate enough for us. Staff was courteous and helpful, check-​in was smooth. Great location for walking a 5 minutes to the Moda Center. Big downside was the other guests, noisy and ill-​mannered at all hours, coming in drunk at 2:30 AM running down hallways and stomping up and down stairs, sounded like wrestling in the rooms. Pot smokers next to us stunk up the place with skunk smell. If you’re looking for cheap, you got it, and you get the type of guests that go along with that.

I always say you get what you pay for. This is a true 2-​star hotel experience. Customer service was okay. Being a paranoid person, I often leave the Do Not Disturb sign in the door so to avoid the housekeeping staff coming in every day. Really, who needs fresh towels every day? So, there’s a pro tip for people who are worried about getting their stuff stolen…
As for the room, we got a king size one. The room was spacious but definitely in need of updating. We found the room to be clean overall. The bed was a little firm for my taste. Also, the room kind of felt stuffy even with the air flow. That was my biggest complaint about the room. You also couldn’t control the temperature; you could only put the fan on high/​low and adjust it from heat to cool.
For the price and location, you can’t beat it. We drove to most parts of Portland within 5 – 15 minutes and it’s near public transit.

So irritated! This place isn’t clean. No warm water… Forget hot water. At times I could smell smoke.

I don’t know why this place had such bad reviews! I found this place to met all my needs at a great price! I reserved the king suite which had an ironing board and a fridge! Sure, the bathroom was practically a closet, they forgot to restock the soap a couple of times, the breakfast is unimpressive to say the least, and the overnight staff was a little badly trained but none of these things interfered with my overall experience. The room was clean and the staff was friendly. Also, the more expensive Crown Plaza across the street offers a convenient bar with local brew on tap.

Absolute dump. I met with a business associate who was staying at Shiloh. He was pissed. The place looks like a cheap old folks home when you drive up. It’s worse on the inside. Out of date and general unkept appearance. In a word.depressing.

This Hotel sucks. They forget they are in the customer service business. I reserve a 2 bed room from Priceline in March for a August business meeting. I call the Hotel to make sure I will have 2 beds and that they will accept packages. Told of course we will and have your room for you. Fast forward 5 months later, we end up with one bed and a couch, were are told we can move the next night for the rest of our 4 night stay into a 2 bed room place. Girl is gone, instead a RUDE JASON tells us that we don’t get 2 beds at all and will have to move out after our 3^rd night into a smaller place. So we have to move everything back out to our truck in the am, to move back into a smaller room with a cot (that they left in the hall). Jason keeps mentioning that he isn’t charging me for any upgrades??? Since when is a couch or a cot an upgrade from the bed I paid for. Then they have to nerve to tell me that if I had contacted the directly and made the reservation, I wouldn’t have this problem. So I guess if you are from out of town and use Priceline or a travel service you are a second class customer. He kept saying it’s up to us what room I’m given. I paid for 2 beds and never got 2 beds, period. Worst Hotel service I have ever had. I travel 15 to 20 weekends a year on business. The other hotels have nothing to fear from this flop house.
Don’t do business with them. The rooms stick and the bathtub faucet kept falling off. Crappy hotel run by rude people.

This is by far the worst hotel experience I have ever had. After having my credit card charged while I was still on my way there, when I got there I was denied check in. The man behind the counter, Whose name I believe was Dave, falsely accused me of having been there previously, and having marijuana with me. I asked him for a refund, and was given a receipt for a refund for $ 25 less than what I was charged. When I began to inquire about it, I was promptly told to «go away», as he retreated to his office where he was then unseen. I ended up going to the lions inn about 5 blocks away, and trust me it’s worth the extra ten dollars to not be treated like a criminal.

Our stay at the hotel was one of the worst experiences I have ever had at a hotel and I have stayed at hundreds of places across the country. Our first night there the shower handle popped off and would not go back on. I told the front desk person around 9 PM that night and was told that maintenance would fix it on Monday. Monday morning I went to the front desk to verify it would be fixed and was told rudely that it just «pops back on» as if I were stupid and also should be fixing the shower even though I am a guest. We left for the afternoon and came back around 4 to find our room not cleaned by maid service and the shower handle seemingly fixed. We were forced to ask for clean towels and later that night found out that the handle in fact was not fixed but simply loosely stuck back on there. We were not offered another room to stay in and thus endured 2 and a half days with a broken shower. We were supposed to stay there 5 nights – we only lasted 2. When all of this was brought up to management I heard excuses instead of apologies. Stay away from this place if you would like to actually enjoy Portland.

Service: 5 stars. The front desk was so friendly, he was very outgoing and helpful.
Room: 3 stars. I had a 1^st floor king bed room, which has the basics, nothing fancy, but everything besides the red stain (Please just tell me it’s koolaid) on the carpet seemed pretty clean. The room did have a very slight hint of someone smoking, and the burn hole in the curtain confirmed it. Which is funny because I was upgraded after someone smoked in the original room I was going to have.
Food/​Other: Don’t get your hopes up for the continental breakfast. The fruit was old/​rotting, the choices very limited, to just apple/​orange juice, dry oatmeal to reheat, and some small, dry danishes.
Parking: 4 stars. Free, which in this area of the Rose Garden, is limited for hotels, and I was able to see my car through my window. Too bad it was not covered or more protected so I could sleep better knowing my belongings were monitored.
Overall: Just a stain on the carpet and piddly breakfast, for a good hotel, that does the job, friendly staff, and great location to it all.

Good place to stay. No parking fees and free breakfast

My girlfriend and I stayed here during a long trip north, we were just looking for somewhere clean and close to town to stay for a couple of nights. Jason on the front desk was very helpful, both on the phone and in person, and we happily checked in. This place is fairly basic but we couldn’t fault it — room was just as the pictures suggest, motel was quiet, plenty of hot water and friendly staff. The breakfast is basic but all we really wanted was a hot coffee and a bagel, which was readily available. Coffee was pretty decent too! There’s also a guest sauna which we didn’t get a chance to use, but it sounds like a nice touch you don’t see everywhere.
It’s also a bit cheaper than other options we looked at, so all in all I’m very satisfied with our stay and would recommend this place.

oh boy, Shilo Inn Rose Garden is a 2-​star hotel that doesn’t even try to mollify its guests. The Best Western has a certain reliability about it but the Shilo Inn seems to have just given up.
The frontdesk staff were friendly and meant well, but they were totally overwhelmed by a power surge that fried their systems. Nobody seemed to have been clever enough (or enough time) to keep track of the occupied rooms but we were first assigned to an occupied room! Thankfully when we swiped our key we didn’t walk in on anyone!
The room itself wasn’t much to write about. I’d attest to the photos being accurate, but notice that the TV is turned off. The TV was super fuzzy. The tiny bathroom, which you also can’t see in the photo was so tiny you have to squeeze between the toilet and the bathtub in order to open the door and mobilize out. The shower control also had a mind of its own.
As for the bedding, one of my sheets had a strange oil splotch on it — methinks someone was eating in bed.
It was a cool night so when we turned on the heater, a very unpleasant smell emanated that we had to make do without.
On the plus side there’s a microwave and fridge — you don’t often see that in most hotels. The continental breakfast was very minimal — I’d like to know what’s so crappy about the continent. I was also told the Wifi was spotty.
Across the street is the Crowne Plaza. It was beckoning me all night. If you have a choice for hotel, I would choose some other place than the Shilo.
If you do not have a choice (Hotwire/​Priceline, or Company forced you to stay here), then bring your own sheets, your own shampoo and soap, and a jailbroken iPhone that can be your hotspot.
