Rock Soft Futon

I’ve had my Rock Soft Futon for over a month. When I lay down on this thing I feel like a kid with a new toy… It feels so good to lay on. It’s my bed and I love it. Smells so good too. Got one of the firm ones. Best bed I’ve ever had.

I absolutely love my futon and locally made bed I bought from Rock Soft! I’ve been sleeping like a baby and am super happy! The cost is completely reasonable (cheaper than cotton cloud) and cheaper even than an Ikea bed and mattress. I love supporting a local business and that I can get my futon re-​stuffed if I ever need to. Everyone who works there from the owner to the guy at the warehouse were all super friendly and helpful. It was a quick and easy experience from start to finish. Highly recommend!

We spent a good deal of time finding a place to buy three futons for our home and it seems to me this is the best game in town. The prices are fair but not cheap, they also have lots of options for different types of filler including organic cotton and foam cores. They have a good selection of cover material as well with samples in the store. We went with a few futons that can be right up against a wall without needing to be moved to come out to bed, pretty cool stuff.
The two ladies on staff that we met at different times were pretty cool and I hear the owners are very laid back nice people. They do deliveries and also be sure to check out their tibetan meditation cushions, we purchased 4 for floor seating and we love them.

So, they are a little pricey. That said, the product is nice. I’m not 22 anymore, so it does kind of matter how and how well I sleep. Having seen the reviews commenting on the apparently erratic business hours, I used my handy cell phone to call in advance of dropping by the store. The helpful young woman who answered the phone informed me that I would need to come by and make a selection within 30 minutes if I wanted a futon the same day. Reason: all futons are made to order and take a couple of hours to complete. I found this to be a very acceptable reason. I told her I’d be right there, hopped in the care, and headed over. Sure enough I was able to make a selection, pay, and confirm pick up at their warehouse/​factory for later that afternoon.
The star dock is because the covers and dust mite protectors are a pretty hard sell and are marked up quite a bit from what you can find on Amazon. I’m not hating on a local business, but I think that when you’re spending mattress money (groupon prices) on a futon, you shouldn’t need a $ 60 mattress protector too — it should be included or unnecessary. I amazoned mine, thank you very much. Anyway, I drove by the factory immediately to confirm that I’d be back at 3:30 to pick up said futon. Then, I ran some errands, and my futon was ready and waiting when I came back at the appointed time. Slept like a baby and wasn’t bothered in the slightest of the new futon smell that the sales lady warned me about as «barnyard» and which necessitates the $ 60 cover. I instead paid $ 40 for a PVC and phthalate free version from Amazon, and I didn’t mind at all waiting the two days for free shipping. There’s a $ 22 version too, but it doesn’t mention being PVC free.

Amazing organic futon! I’ve never slept so good, plus they have dust mite covers which saved my butt big time.

The quality of the mattress and the covers are amazing, and everything was reasonably priced. We got ours only a few hours after we ordered it! Great quality, super comfy.
Staff was really helpful and friendly, both at the store and in the warehouse.

Do not even bother. I went well within the store’s hours (and not around lunchtime!) only to find it closed with a «back in 5 minutes» sign. Waited around for 45 minutes, and the sign was still there, no one had come back. Very disappointed in this lackadaisical business ethic and pure disregard for potential customers. I will not be back.
The only good thing that came out of it was trying Rovente pizza down the street to kill time while waiting for them to never come back.
If you’re looking for organic or sustainably made futons, try Cotton Cloud. From looking at prices in Rock Soft Futon’s window, Cotton Cloud is cheaper too (which is not saying much for them as both places are insanely expensive). The people at CC were at least more helpful without being stalkerish. And, not to mention, open when they say they will be!

I don’t usually write Unilocal reviews unless I get amazing service and a quality product. This local company did it. Local, organic, and vegan materials! What! I just want to say thanks again. Bravo. Decent prices too…

I’ve been sleeping on Rock Soft Futon mattresses for about twenty years, and I don’t have any complaints! Always a good night’s sleep for a GREAT price, plus I love supporting local businesses. The owner and the employees are really nice, and stand by their product for life. To comment on other people’s reviews who complained about the pickup hours being iffy – the store closes at six but the warehouse, where you pickup the products, closes at five. Again, Rock Soft Futon provides great quality for a great price, and I highly recommend them to everyone!

I bought a futon from Rock Soft last weekend, and thus far I’m über-​pleased. Rock Soft is the opposite of high pressure sales; Jay gave us good information about the futons and answered all our questions, but was happy to let us try everything out and bounce around as long as we needed to. We ended up buying a queen Ultra Wool futon, as a primary mattress.
When we unrolled it, we thought it was possibly defective (too short) and brought it back, but Jay was nice enough to demonstrate that it was the same size as the other queen mattresses, and explained that it would expand. He was right — after two days of sleeping on it, it’s expanded quite nicely. No one made me feel dumb about the mistake, though, and Jay assured us that if it didn’t grow, we could return it, no problem.
This futon is intended as a short-​term replacement for a much more expensive memory foam mattress that didn’t work out for us, but if my first two nights of sleep are any indication, we may be sticking with it long term. My back is SO much happier, and I’ve been getting the best sleep I’ve had in months. I am VERY pleased, and the lifetime guarantee and option to have it re-​stuffed means I’ll probably be using this mattress in some form or another for quite some time.

We bought a queen futon from Rock Soft, in August 2012. Would do so again in a heartbeat! The futon is fabulous, sleeps well, comfortable. We did not have any issues with hours, closing etc, so can’t speak to that. Service was laid back, but I would not expect any thing different from a futon shop. We advised the sales person we would be primarily sleeping on our futon, not dual purpose, so she recommended the Ultra Wool Futon. Absolutely fabulous! I also love the fact the futons are made here in town!

My boyfriend and I had been shopping around for futons for a bit and we went to Cotton Cloud futon before this. Not only were the futons here much better quality than CC, but most of them were cheaper too. We asked the sales woman a few questions and she helped us decide what kind of mattress we wanted (and also let us sit on every futon in the store). She was very kind and helpful, and even remembered us a month later when we came in again ready to buy!
We bought the futon and were able to pick it up a few hours later the same day, which was really convenient. All in all, I had a really pleasant time.
I’ve noticed that a lot of other people are talking about how the sales assistant ignored them, or that the store is unreliable. I have to say we weren’t ignored either time, and we weren’t the only customers in the store. It DID have a very casual vibe though, so if you’re expecting the old fashioned salesman to pounce on you and immediately try to sell you a bunch of crap you don’t need, thankfully you don’t get that here! Any questions were politely answered and she even gave us a pamphlet to compare mattresses, but we also had our own personal space. I don’t know how reliable their shipping department is, but something you should know before going in is their warehouse DOES have different hours than the store, so please make sure you make arrangements thoroughly!
All in all, I was very happy with it. :)

I am giving them the second star (instead of just one) because I bought a futon from them four years ago which was comfy and I liked that it was made locally.
I remember having some issues with the original purchase with their hours and turnaround time on getting the futon (and maybe even billing issues?), but I try to release bad memories and move on.
So… after we discovered the old futon had molded (not Rock Soft’s fault — BAD issues with my old house), we went back to buy a new futon, despite the terrible Unilocal reviews (the prices seemed right and we were tired of sleeping on the couch.)
We got cash because we were nervous about their reputation of double-​billing, and showed up at 5:30 p.m., as soon as I could get there after work. The website and the door both said they are open until 6, yet it was dark and the door was locked and there was no explanation. All the memories of bad vibes from trying to purchase the first time started flooding back.
We walked away exasperated and went directly over to Woodstock and purchased from Apple Crate Half Price Furniture. I didn’t like their futon options quite as well, but the Mattressman was awesome and we ended up getting a great conventional mattress at a great deal with NO HASSLE. I was happy to hand my money over to him.
If you don’t mind third world «customer service,» try these folks, if you have the time and patience to deal with their issues. The old futon was acutally pretty nice. If you care who you support and how they treat their customers, don’t go to this place. I will never give them my business again.

I’ve got mixed feelings about my experience with Rock Soft Futon.
Pros: 1. They hand-​make their futons just a few blocks away from their retail location. 2. Pick up is easy and they usually have futons in stock. 3. The futons are good quality and they offer a lifetime guarantee — free re-​tufting, refilling etc. 4. When you buy from them, you’re supporting a cool local business.
Cons: 1. They’re not exactly reliable. I went to pick up a futon on a Saturday at 5pm and they were closed though their sign said they were open until 6pm. I’d emailed several days before to check stock etc. and never got a response. I went back about a week later and got the very last queen futon that they had in stock. 2. They’re not exactly friendly.
If the futon holds up well, maybe I’ll consider adding another star. In the end, the inconveniences are small in comparison to the idea of sleeping on a mass-​produced spring or foam mattress. (Yuck). Just call ahead and do some research on their website before you visit the store and you should make out just fine.

Terrible customer service. Bought two futons from them, which turned out to be of decent quality. After a couple years they simply refused to replace the cotton in one that a puppy had piddled on. Though they did rebuilds all the time (and according to one of the employees at the other store, for exactly this reason) I was told on the phone that the idea, «…was gross, and nobody here wanted to do that.» The boy I talked to on the phone was dismissive, talked over me, and was rude. Cotton Cloud gets my business from now on.
