Specialties
Our specialty is organic, vegan cuisine. We use local produce when available and we do not reach outside of the United States for out of season produce (eg. we patiently wait for tomatoes and peppers till they are available locally). This allows for creativity and a connectedness to local farmers and our northwest ecosystem, which is quite bountiful. Local beers and wines are featured in our restaurant and for purchase in our market. Portland jazz jams performs from 7−10pm every Thursday and we schedule music every Friday and Saturday nite. always free:)
Our market is quaint, yet complete. We offer local milk, eggs and cheese, non-dairy beverages, juices, the best locally grown produce and a variety of bulk items, from beans and grains to granolas, sugars and flours and then some. Great selection of beer to go and plenty of tasty, locally made treats.
We care about what we eat, where it came from and all the energy costs associated with it. We care about our community.
History
Established in 2006.
I have lived in the St. Johns neighborhood of Portland since November, 2001. I had been thinking about my own business ideas my whole life, but a few key things triggered the idea for Proper Eats. There was nothing like what we do in St. Johns and I knew the community would be receptive. I had made numerous connections while working at many of the local area farmers markets. My friend, Lori had a café in St. Johns and wanted to sell it to me. I wanted to do a seasonal, bulk food market with an attached café, to demonstrate what can be made by what we carry and also to help eliminate food waste from the market. It had to have live music, be community based and be predominately vegan. It worked and still does. Come by and see for yourself.

I love Portland. I love this neighborhood. I am honored to have the opportunity to work hard, offering the best deals on the best organic and local produce I can find. I used to be a lawyer. I loved the law, but I could not accept the toll it was taking on my mind. Our adversarial system spins us in circles and leaves no clear definition as to right from wrong. I would represent individuals or environments that had obviously been wronged, yet big money would fight hard just to fight, not because they were right. I admire my colleagues for continuing the struggle, but I have found a different way to contribute. Promoting conscience food choices. I love to garden and will grow some of the produce you find in Proper Eats, as will other people who live in the neighborhood. The packaging and humanitarian costs associated with food has gotten out of control. We must minimize our impact at this level.
