A book store that’s an entire city block?! Awesome!!! I’m so glad that there are still independent book stores out there. The children’s section is just amazing– it takes up about a quarter of the store. I really enjoyed looking at their top sellers list and also bestsellers. They also have an amazing selection of board games as well. This was my first trip to Portland and all I wanted was to go here. I actually went to Powells twice because I loved it so much! Also they are open from 9am till 11pm so you can even go there after hitting the awesome bar scene in the Pearl District.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Powell’s Books. Been many many times and never fail to be amazed and awed by their helpful staff, huge array of not just books, but everything else a bibliophile could ever want. My daughters and I recently took in many books of our own that we simply didn’t want or need anymore.
They’ll buy back your books, generally based on what they do or don’t already have in stock, current popularity, etc. You can either get cash for the ones they do take, or double the cash value and get one of their Powell’s gift cards, for future use in the store. Ensures that you’ll come back in to spend the gift card, but if you’re a book lover at all, then this isn’t a problem.
If you’re lucky enough to be able to park in the adjoining structure, then you are afforded free parking if your purchases are over a certain amount. After parking your car, you have to walk down the stairs, hand over said car keys and then can continue on into the store. The gentleman who usually works the parking structure isn’t a very genial fellow, but it’s easily overlooked, in my opinion.
The sheer magnitude of books is almost impossible to comprehend. The also have a rare book room, but that isn’t accessible to just any/​everyone, you’re escorted and watched, to make sure nothing untoward happens. Stands to reason.
Being a Portland icon, one is never at a loss for things to do/​see. There’s a coffee shop where you can sit and browse while people watching out the windows, sip your favorite brew or soft drink. They have a plethora of Portland themed items for sale, in addition to regular book themed items. Have always made it a place to go for an afternoon trip with my girls, we’re never disappointed.

If you are a lover of books, book smells, the feel of a book, the holding of a book, the touching of a book, then this is a must place to spend a few hours while in Portland. Old world book store that takes up a whole city block. Multiple levels of colored rooms that entice you to stop, pause, grasp, and read.
My favorite room, bar none, is the first and rare edition room up on the fourth floor. Stop and ask for a badge as they are limiting the amount of people into that room now. Don’t be intimidated, just ask for a lanyard badge at the counter on the fourth floor and enter into a very quiet and very special domain. Lots of Lewis and Clark material… and some of it is original!!!
I like to inquire about the most expensive book/​collection currently on hand. Do it…
The first floor has many Portland gadgets like the infamous PDX socks and coasters and then there is their delightful coffee shop with pastries. I just had the capachino and it had some of the best foam that I have had in a long time.
On my latest adventure I found that they have a self publishing machine right there in the store. Bring your book or memoirs on a flash drive and in no time you too can become a published author. I would call ahead to see exactly what they need, but it’s pretty cool that they now offer this service.

Powell’s Books is a easily the biggest bookstore i’ve ever visited. It occupies an entire city block and is centrally located in Portland between the Pearl and Downtown districts. For the size of the store, I was impressed with their book display.
Everything was extremely clean, well-​organized and well-​kept. The book selection is pretty much all-​encompassing and you will find everything that you’re looking for. They even had a small section on Bigfoot (must be a Portland thing). I also walked through their Manga section which was quite comprehensive.
While Powell’s Books is not necessarily a «must-​see» Portland attraction, it’s certainly a good tourist option while walking Downtown and in the Pearl District. This includes killing time, or just resting. There is also an attached coffee shop within/​next to the bookstore.

Who goes on vacation to Portland, and goes to a bookstore?!
Okay, so i did. I’ve taken advantage of technology and download everything. I have audiobooks, e-​books, and all that I can find on the internet to read. Even though the brick and mortar bookstores are fading away, Powell’s Books reminds me that being able to look around and open books before buying them is something I do miss a lot.
No other bookstore I’ve ever been into compares! Books for days and days and days! The place is very organized, and theirs signs that point out different genres, topics of interest, and it’s all color coded. Getting lost in a bookstore never was more fun! Of course I looked for the few things that I could be happy with for the rest of my life: Star Wars, Coffee, Food, Fitness and Health, and books about Portland!
I did have to drag my significant other into Powell’s, but she was even impressed after we left. There is almost something for everyone at Powell’s. I hope that this place stays here forever.

Powell’s has a huge size, with well-​laid out sections for books.
The sections are clearly marked and sorted by general topic or type of book. They have everything from fiction, fantasy, romance, biography, classics, etc. They have a cool selection of books on local things like Oregon trails, pet friendly travel in Oregon, and much more.
What’s cool is they have a whole section on American History (AHEM, to the guy who said there are 0 books on WW1), and history in general including many books on WW1.
Another feature of this store is that there is a HUGE kiddies section at the end of the store. Here, kids will be able to find just about any book they are looking for.
The café section is large, and many people use the sitting area to sip something tasty while reading enthralling and entertaining stories.
I would definitely come back, as it offers a nice place to take a break from a long day of shopping.

Floors on floors on floors of book heaven. You can smell the earthiness and knowledge in the air if you try hard enough.
Advantages: amazing photographing opportunity everywhere, interesting books and you’re surrounded by people who love language and knowledge.
Disadvantages: may be difficult to find a bathroom in this vortex of literature.

The best bookstore I have ever been in. It’s the size of an entire city block! You could spend a whole day in here — there are so many different rooms and floors that hold different genres. New books, used books, red books, blue books… and you’d never think you’d need to own a notepad that was shaped like a steak until you came here.
You can find rare books/collector’s items on the top floor — where you have to get passes from the front desk to even enter the room!
If the thought of exploring the bookstore makes you tired, don’t worry, they have a solution for that too — there’s a small café inside for your coffee or sugar boost.

Hello, bookworm heaven!!! A THREE-​STORY bookstore with used/​new books, a bunch of different merchandise, and so many different sections. Living in Hawaii, we have only ONE standing bookstore left, Barnes n Noble at Ala Moana Shopping Center. I definitely put Powell’s at the top of my list of a place I had to visit while visiting Portland. My mom and I stayed for three hours. Would’ve been longer if we didn’t have a dinner reservation to make.
I found a used hard-​book cover (in elite condition) by one of my favorite authors Joanne Fluke for only $ 8.95! And no sales tax?! Holla! Her hard-​cover books are generally $ 27.00. I also bought myself a Powell’s shirt, and some gifts for people back home. My mom is a teacher and actually found a book (Duck! Rabbit!) which is seriously adorable that she wanted for a lesson for awhile, and couldn’t find back home. $ 6.99 hardcover, brand new. Another deal!
Their café is adorable as well. We needed a quick snack to tide us over, between lunch and dinner and some coffee because it’d already been a long, (FUN), adventurous day. We ordered a simple grilled cheese and tomato sandwich, it was tasty! I loved how they used mozzarella. When you bit into it, the cheese pulled away super stringy. That’s how you know a grilled cheese is GOOD. Our iced soy hazelnut latte, and iced almond hazelnut latte was a perfect pair with it before our dinner at Le Pigeon.
I wish I brought another suitcase, I would’ve bought more books to bring back home! Side note the next time I visit this iconic store.

I am in no way a person that often gets books to read leisurely. With that being said, I think I stepped into book heaven. The information desk and staff was so helpful in finding the books I needed for gifts. I am so glad I stopped by to check it out. Every book you need is all here! Come by and check it out. TAX FREE too!

This bookstore is classic. This was definitely a place I made sure I went to while in Portland. They literally have rooms upon rooms of books. You could easily spend an entire afternoon in here and not be disappointed.
They have lots of new and used books, along with adorable merchandise! I had to buy one of the umbrella cups, along with 2 of their reusable bags because they were only 99cents!!! Of course I bought plenty of books that were reasonably priced, so I definitely didnt feel guilty about all of my purchases.
They also buy used books, so if you have a collection of books you no longer need trade them in for cash or get more for you buck by getting store credit, you know to replenish the books you just sold.
There are also lots of information booths located around the store, the employees are extremely helpful if you are looking for a specific.

With the rise of Amazon and the demise of Borders, the dominance of physical bookstores, even chains like Barnes and Noble, seems to have passed. And while I’m an ardent fan of Amazon and online shopping, there’s something special about being able to physically browse books, receive actual human recommendations, and see displays of colorful book covers and delightful words.
That’s where Powell’s Books comes in. The flagship store is on Burnside and is conveniently located and accessible from multiple stops of the excellent Portland public transportation system. With a spacious and welcoming entrance and thoughtfully designed rooms that allow for exploration and discovery, Powell’s Books is one of the best bookstores I’ve ever been in.
Truthfully, I spent 95% of my time in only one section of the store, but just walking around you get a sense of the vastness of the multiple floors, the design-​your-​own-​book self published area, and even a hint of the rare books collection that requires a special pass.
Everyone I know who we went with here loved it and I’m sure you will too. In this age of everything online, Powell’s has found a recipe to thrive and survive. We happily bought lots of books here and even a souvenir or two. I have no idea what the cost was compared to buying online, but that’s the kind of attitude that the very best places engenders when they get the buying experience right (Trader Joe’s, Costco, etc.).

I have shopped here for over 20 years and I’m finally Unilocaling about it. Powells does not need my endorsement but deserves it.
There is no better place to find and review before you buy a book. To actually hold a large coffee photo book is an experience. To have 50+ options of every book you ever considered available and compatible at once??? Nowhere else in America can you do this. Maybe in the world…
Amazon might have a lower price option. But they cannot have my money for price alone. Until then Powells will be my bookstore of choice.

As I told my boyfriend, if my brain had the capacity/​knowledge retention of this bookstore, I would be amazed with myself. I almost felt like a kid in a candy store … except an adult nerding out hard in a book store.
Upon walking in, there were so many people here in the lobby and weaving in and out of bookshelves and floors. I felt a never-​ending curiosity that had me wanting to stay longer until we realized we had to leave because of dinner reservations, but my goodness they have books on everything and anything you need and want to know about. I feel everyone’s experience is different here depending on what you’re interested in/​come across, but we spent a while just glancing at books on bartending, traveling, Filipino culture, children books and came across Modern Romance by Aziz Ansari (one of my favorite all-​time books so far!)
They even have a private book room on the top floor where you have to get passes to from the front desk up there. Crazy ain’t it?
All the little trinkets and souvenirs here are cute! From trendy totes to foodie guides in Portland and cute mugs on the nervous system, I fell in love with this place hardcore. This beats any other bookstore you’ve been to, local or chain stores such as Borders (when they were still alive) and Barnes & Noble. Definitely make a pit stop here if you have time. and if you think you still hate books. think again.

We literally spent 2 hours in here just wandering from room to room, looking at books and little trinkets to bring back home!
I love that the café is super chill and allows you to bring a book in there to read. I spent a few minutes in there reading a book and here and there times on benches and chairs around the store reading books and no one batted an eye!
You could be sitting in the middle of an isle reading a book with an employee organizing books and he wouldn’t bat an eye unlike *ahem* Barnes and Noble *ahem* (lol I’m guilty of this but I was so absorbed in my book I didn’t realize, I moved once I noticed!)
If you love books and places with lots of rooms, this place is for you!
Books here are actually really decently priced and so are some of the trinkets. I highly recommend you coming to check this place out.

Need a book? Trust me, you will find it here. This place was MASSIVE, I don’t know if I’ve ever been in a bookstore that large. Not to mention the level of organization to keep that all in check.
Genres are clearly labeled based on rooms and row numbers. If that perfect book still alludes you, they have a ton of info desks with employees excited to help. There are a million recommendations for things to give a shot at, and they also sell local Portland and general fandom collectibles. There’s a coffee shop too (next to the erotica section, ohohoho).
We grabbed two books and a Luna Lovegood Funko Pop doll for good measure. If I lived in a Portland, I’d probably live here.

The dream of the 90’s is alive in Portland. Portland. Portland.
Seriously though, it is. It’s as if there were no such thing as tablets or e-​readers, the way people flock to Powell’s. I mean, this bookstore is really the most impressive I’ve ever seen. There’s just so much variety, across the different rooms, and with all the genres of books available, you can get lost fairly easily and never find your way out. Yikes.
The staff is very helpful, both in finding something you like, and even just finding your way around the place. You gotta be careful though, because since they’re very good at recommending things, you’ll be tempted to spend hundreds of dollars all at once, and those books really add up quite fast. I managed to only buy 2 books, at a fairly reasonable price. It isn’t the cheapest bookstore out there, but again, the sheer variety is something to marvel at.
With all the ladders strewn around, you might think that there’d be some liability involved, but people just go for it when trying to reach for those high shelves. It’s really quite mesmerizing, and it’s fun to just watch these daring exploits for that hard to find book on that top shelf.
I’ll be back if I’m in Portland and need to search the aisles and aisles of books for some new reading material. Great place to spend an afternoon looking for books, or even just people-​watching by the windows.

A MUST GO
So many cool books! Each colored room has a different theme. Mostly spent my time in the red room which were language and travel books where I found a book about «Strange Maps.» I think the other room I went to was the red room which was art/​architecture so I was looking up books about street fashion ha. It’s also so cool that they have a book espresso machine if you want to self-​publish your writing.
Would reserve a few hours just so you can browse around the selection.

If there was ever a reason for me to go to Portland again, Powell’s would definitely be the place and reason to go. Although it’s only a bookstore, there’s plenty of bookstores in the world. There used to be one on ever corner, where you could sit, read, study, have a cup of coffee and relax. Bookstores have really lost their luster especially with everything going digital. What Powell’s brought me back to was these days, when a books meant something. Three stories of books of all categories. Everything you’ve been looking for you is there. I was able to find two books I have been able to get my hands on. You can always find a certain book, but not necessarily the right edition. Luckily, I was finally able to find it here.
It’s a wonderland of books, a place where books will not be forgotten or replaced by the digital age. A place where you can sit, read, study, have a cup of coffee and relax. Best bookstore in all the world and hopefully forever.

Powell’s is the biggest bookstore I’ve ever seen… it’s a Barnes and Nobles on steroids! It takes up an entire city block in downtown Portland and it’s awesome. It’s multiple stories and the bookstore is so big that they divide genres by different colored rooms. There’s even a coffee shop inside! It’s a fun place to browse, even if you don’t need any books. They have plenty of knick knacks and fun toys to look at too. Basically, if you don’t find the book you need here, then it must not exist, because you are bound to find SOMETHING.

Powell’s Books in the world of books is the mecca, as far as brick and mortar retail locations goes
However, so is Amazon (and eBay for that matter), in the world wide marketplace of online shopping and access.
They have a lot, maybe not «everything» (I can easily find what I’m looking for online and often times cheaper), but it’s the «experience» here of impulsive browsing and shopping which is appealing.
It’s a literary loiterer’s paradise! You can come here, squat for hours, read books and magazines, like a library and enjoy a day here.
It is a bit overwhelming, but it’s that epic approach to being so monolithic in size and scope which as made this place so famous.
As a tourist, it’s hard to spend too much time here unless you love books. Otherwise, it’s just books and stuff you can find online or elsewhere, it’s just more consolidated here, as one stop shopping to leaf through books and physically browse and review. There’s a world to see in Portland outside, and also books are heavy to travel back with.
What I think this is or could be great for is finding «local» publications here, more of the regional niche.
They also have a «Rare Books» section for collector’s items, under lock and key in a special room too. I wanted to go and check it out, but felt a little intimidated since I had no intentions to buy any vintage investment quality books.
I’m rating this * * * * because in the world of books, this is pretty much the be-​all, end-​all of retail book stores.

I haven’t loved a bookstore this much since the Tattered Cover in Denver. Books, books, and more books! The selection is incredible, not only do they carry the newly released but also one of a kinds.
Each section is divided by color: red, rose, purple, gold, blue, orange, and coffee. Just look up the what interests you and then go to that color. Of course along the way, you can’t help but spend time browsing through all the books that cross your path.
As a bibliophile, this is a wonderful place to spend a few hours. I’m not in Portland much, but when I am, I always make time for Powell’s. It’s heaven on earth!

The 2016 Unilocal 500, Review #150:
I have been in bookstores in the finest cities, all over the world and I have yet to find a true wonder like Powell’s City of Books anywhere. I’m not sure that I could add anything to the reviews that hasn’t already been posted, as this is truly the number one bookstore I have been to.
I remember my first time coming into the store wanting to see what all the hype was about. I think I walked in walked across the main entry and entered the area where the stairwell was and was baffled by the size. The other magnitude of this place is not quite imaginable as defined by the term bookstore. In a related claim, so many of my favorite gems are little hole-​in-​the-​wall bookshops that have just enough of something for everyone. Powell’s has everything for everyone most of the time. Let me define everything. I cannot buy the books that I want without declaring myself ready for the poor house.
I’ve tried a couple of tactics in the past, to no avail, when they were closing up. First I said, «Just leave the keys. I’ll lock up.» They didn’t bite at that. So, on my next visit I reset my tactics and I tried this, «Let’s make a little deal here, I will give you all of my belongings until morning including my bag, my ID, my shirt, my pants, my shoes and I will wear socks and a pair of cycling shorts. All I want to do is read. There would be no possible way for me to smuggle anything out. You can even lock the door from the outside.» To my dismay I learned that I wasn’t the first person to concoct such a proposal. Although, I know for certain that mine was in jest and a full complement to how incredible that store truly is.
Come see for yourself.

Overwhelming and impressive in a very cool way. As others note, Powell’s is just a massive, MASSIVE bookstore located on Burnside. It’s in a great neighborhood with plenty to eat nearby. We found parking in a lot just across the street, it was $ 7.00. Given where Powell’s is located and the scarcity of parking in Portland in general, I was fine with that price.
Powell’s is 4 stories and approximately a block of new and used books. What’s nice is that the new and used books are mixed in together. So, one of the books I bought my son I thought was new turned out to be used, just in great condition. This makes shopping easier, you can just look for your topic of book in one spot rather than going back and forth from new to used.
In addition to books, there are all sorts of Portland souvenirs and other items like t-​shirts, mugs, stickers, games, toys, etc. My 5 year old son loved it, he could have looked at stuff all day. I got some stuff from Olympia Provisions while I was there.
The store can be daunting, but I think it’s probably laid out in the best possible manner given the size and content of the store. There are plenty of signs and it’s also color-​coded for various types of books.
The staff was very friendly, and the checkout process was also easy. They had several registers up and running, and even though we went on a weekend and there were quite a few people in the store, we didn’t wait long to check out. Even if you don’t plan on buying anything, you will probably find something here you want. No trip to Portland complete without at least hanging out here a few minutes.

Absolutely loved this bookstore. Possibly the biggest bookstore I’ve been to in a long time where they had old books, new books, magazines, tapes, etc. anything that you could possibly find a bookstore can be found here. It’s so big it literally takes up the entire block! There is a coffee café also located in the bookstore where you can take the books and actually read them in the café while you’re there enjoying time there with friends or by yourself. Additionally, there are benches along the side of the entire bookstore (right by the windows) where you can literally sit and read your book and see if you are interested enough to even buy it.
I could spend forever if someone is willing to deliver food to me here. haha.

This place is famous for a reason… It’s like an endless maze of new and used books that you never want to escape! You might even find rare books if you keep your eye out for it that the staff can sometimes miss (first edition type stuff).
Mind you, it’s not one of those places where everything is new and spiffy, but that’s not the reason you should be going to a bookstore like this anyway.
My only complaint is that I don’t live close enough to walk to it…

Get a map. Talk to the info booth. Plan to spend hours here. Fairly priced used books. Help the cause and sell your old ones. A million different places to sit down in this four story monstrosity. Very knowledgeable and passionate staff with enthusiasm for reading. They allow outside drinks, and also have a coffee café inside.

This place is pretty cool! There are lots of used and new books here and you can stay trapped in here forever just looking and reading and glancing at thousands of books! I found myself in the kids and education section most of the time since I am a teacher. I didn’t get to browse much but from the time I was in here, I was browsing for books that I could find useful for my classroom. Being a teacher, this is awesome because I found some workbooks that I could utilize in my classroom. They were «used» meaning the pages weren’t written in it, which is perfect because who would purchase a workbook that was filled with writing right?
At checkout, I asked the lady if they gave teacher discounts but they only give discounts to residents from Oregon and Washington but the lady was nice enough to give me a 10% discount!
It is very hard to find street parking but there is a parking structure right next to the place. The parking is very bizzare as there is only one way to go up and go down so you must HONK your horn to warn another person when you are going up or down. They give you a specific spot to park and once you park, you give the keys to the guy. If you buy something, you do not have to pay for parking but I think parking is cheap regardless. A little less than $ 2 for an hour?

Bookworms unite!
This place is HUGE! You can find every type of book here! Use the computers if you have a specific book in mind that you want to find. You’ll spend a good amount of time being here whether you just want to browse around, read some books or both. They also have friendly staff ready to answer any questions you have. My bf ended up buying at least three or four books here while I bought one book and a knee-​high cat socks. Yes, they have socks and other cute things!
Visit this place while in Portland even if you’re not into books. You’ll appreciate this place and maybe surprise yourself to find something you like.

YES! Once I knew that I was visiting Portland, I knew that I had to check out Powell’s Bookstore! So, I came here by myself. This bookstore is HUGE! The floors are color themed, such as Rose room, Green Room, and etc. Each room is known to have different genres such as Fiction, Sci-​Fi, Children’s and etc. There is also a coffee room, where there is a small café and individual seats and tables so you can study or hang out. This room seems to get pretty packed. I’ve probably circled Powell’s a few times and every time I checked back to this room, I couldn’t find a seat. You can easily get lost in here. Luckily, there are information booths and you can ask them for help!
I got lost, but it was all fun. Seeing all of the neat books on each floor. You never know what you can find. They also sell board games and neat gifts in here! You don’t even have to be interested in reading books to even enjoy Powell’s bookstore. If you LOVE books, you can spend hours in this bookstore! I realized that after I was done with the bookstore, I saw a map. I saw that there was a secret room? I wish I found it! Oh well, maybe next time if I ever visit Portland again.
I’m not really a reader, but I didn’t want to leave the bookstore empty handed, so I found this really cool coloring book. The coloring book is beautiful! I don’t know how long it will take me to finish it, but I absolutely love it. The coloring book really helps me de-​stress myself.
I HIGHLY recommend Powell’s bookstore if you ever visit Portland. It’s so cool! I LOVE IT!

Powell’s Bookstore must be heaven on Earth to avid readers and book lovers alike — a massive establishment that covers a block on all sides plus a few floors, Powell’s has EVERY book you can think of and plus some more.
Yet despite the initially overwhelming volume of new and used books, everything is well categorized, featured, and sectioned — I consider this to be an incredible feat. Long lines move with efficiency and Powell’s never loses that feel of a mom and pops bookstore despite its size.
It also helps that the Powell’s Bookstore experience includes their pretty cool selection of branded merchandise. Yes, this place is very much a tourist attraction in itself.
Portlandians are lucky to have this bookstore, which opens late to 11pm, in their city.

This was the place to see in Portland, they say. It’s one of Portland’s best attraction, one exclaimed. Could a bookstore be raved about THAT much?! Umm, YES!
This bookstore is the Cadillac of all bookstores. It sits on its own block for crying out loud. There are multiple levels, color coded rooms based on themes and genres, and even a coffee shop between the aisles of endless novels. I spent sometime in the travel section (red room, 800 section) and found so many great books for my upcoming trips. I love how they integrate new and used books together; helps for the price conscious individual. What I really loved were the added accessories: Timbuk2 bags, mugs, t-​shirts and socks! Tacosaurus socks!
I ended up spending over $ 100 that day and only visit 2 of the many color coded rooms. One would need an entire weekend to peruse through the entire bookstore, it’s that massive. If you’re on Portland, come and check them out!

Like any first time visitor to Portland I knew that I was obligated to visit Powell’s Books.
Parking nearby wasn’t too bad, we walked over and began the journey that is Powell’s Books. The place is obviously huge, but they do a great job of directing you with the maps and guides in store. I had no problem getting to the various sections of books that I was interested in.
30 minutes in though, I came to the realization that I come to every time I go to a book store. I absolutely hate physical books. In fact I’m in the middle of getting rid of every physical book that I possibly can from my home. For me, digital is the only way to go. I know that doesn’t hold true for everyone and that plenty of people want to have thousands of books taking up entire rooms in their homes, but I’m just not wired that way. I do read a lot though, so I spent some time looking at staff picks, doing some general browsing, and making mental notes of what to look into more to download to my tablets.
After a while I went to find my mother who was browsing around for ancient hebrew books. She had a stack of books that she was interested in. This of course presented an interesting problem as we were on a road trip with little room in the car. We still had several more days to go that would involve lots of camping, disc golf, and an increasingly dirty car that we would spend some nights sleeping in. Not the ideal place to keep huge books. The solution to this problem? Buy one or two of the books she was interested here and order the rest from Amazon to be conveniently shipped to our house. I believe she did get better prices on the ones she bought at Powell’s, so that is a plus.
Powell’s does a great job at what it does… it’s a huge, must visit tourist spot with an amazing book selection that you won’t physically find anywhere else. Physical book lovers will be in heaven here. It will be interesting to see what happens here as more and more people switch to digital. Definitely worth a visit though for anyone who likes to read.

Love it… This place is the most wonderful book store out there.
There is something about having a book in your hand that stirs up emotions and nostalgia that technology has destroyed.
Powells use to have a huge selection of used books but it seems that the new books out number the old books.
I wish this place was in Seattle.
Everytime I am in Portland I have to visit this place just to visit it.

Tips:
Use the computers if you have a specific book you want. Save yourself a possible headache.
It’s hard to come in and just grab and go. It’s so fun to peruse and so many goodies.
You want a book on an obscure subject? Powell’s may very well have it. Don’t underestimate Powell’s.
Get ready for crowds and lines.
Parking is difficult.
I am starting to pick up pace with my reading, and am so happy to have had the chance to visit Powell’s. 10 out of 10, would definitely visit again!

Best selection of books in the Pacific Northwest. If you need it, they will find it. If it isn’t in their store, they will order it for you. With two full blocks worth of books, this warehouse hosts every subject imaginable plus it has a coffee shop! They have many souvenir items which include tumblers, reusable bags, journals and apparel. Because of its renown, the store is usually full on weekends.
The store is open until late on weekends which is not only convenient but gives you an opportunity to browse it on your way to dinner or the pub. This Pearl District jewel is a most for tourists and locals alike. Visit with ample time, you will regret not taking the time to peruse all the aisles. You never know what title or game will find you. (They also have games and pop culture items and paraphernalia.)

I mean, yah it is the biggest book store in Portland (or anywhere that I’ve been to for that matter) and the amount of content it has is insane.
Yes the books/​games/​toys/​knick knacks here are usually always priced higher than Amazon (even used) but sometimes its nice to just browse.

I have loved and supported Powells since I moved to the PNW 6 years ago. My most recent experience was so terrible I will no longer be shopping there. And that breaks my little heart. I would even support Amazon (and I really dislike Amazon) over them because at least when you get a book in unsatisfactory condition Amazon will give you a refund or exchange for a new book. Or at least try to resolve the issue and not ignore you.
I bought a used book online recently, which I have done many times in the past. The book arrived in terrible, unsellable in my opinion, condition. Not only was it water damaged, but almost every page was written on and highlighted. So apparently this is the type of book Powells sells these days. If they want to sell it in the store where someone can see what it looks like before they buy it, fine. But to send a book in that condition to someone who doesn’t know what it looks like is unacceptable.
I don’t normally write Unilocal reviews, as I like to talk directly to the company to try to resolve the issue. However, I have tried to reach out to Powells, and they have chosen to ignore me. This happened a week ago, and I haven’t heard back from anyone. I’m really disappointed in their lack of customer service far more than I am about them thinking it’s okay to sell a book in very bad condition. I’m actually really sad because I used to love Powell’s.

I could probably stay here for a decade if someone doesn’t drag me out.
I remember spending days locked up in my room reading for hours upon hours, allowing my fingers to flip page after page as each book dragged me deeper and deeper into a fantasy world. (Harry Potter definitely ruined my eyesight)
Anyways, Powell’s is Portland’s gem!
You can find used/​new books in every genre possible.
They should just change the name of this place to Powell’s Library.
Sad part is I couldn’t even buy a book because the line was so crazy long.
I wish they would add registers in different parts of the store instead of one long line…
My favorite part was the small coffeeshop located inside the bookstore where you can buy a cup of joe and enjoy your read while waiting for the line to dwindle down…
You might actually end up reading the whole book before you purchase it ;)

Do I really need to write a review? Probably not but I will anyways so people really know how awesome this place is.
It’s true when people say it’s the whole block, you could get lost for hours looking through books. If you’re looking for something in particular then use the map. If not, wander and enjoy. There is a kids section and a section for every book lover in your life. Everything is color coded, there are suggestions all over, new editions, used, and small gifts for everyday things.
I loved it here. We spent 45 minutes here and bought two books, swiped some bookmarks for memories. It’s definitely a place you can spend a lot of time in and if you’re a book lover, it’s a must.

This place is SO cool. My friends and I stopped by here on the way to the Saturday Market to get a break from the cold and the rain. (It’s about 5 – 10 minutes away from the market depending on how fast you walk haha). This place definitely lives up to the hype! You can honestly easily spend an hour here just wandering through the different floors and knick knacks they have available.
LAYOUT: Multiple floors of books organized by sections based on their subjects. Really organized and clean. They also sell various knick knacks and hipster souvenirs (a lot of them organically made by a local business) in different corners. Lots of gift ideas so check them out! There’s also a coffee shop inside. (:
TIP: Very easy to get lost. There are two entrances. Grab a map at the front for help haha.
RARE BOOK ROOM: It isn’t too big, but it’s full of rare books (obviously haha). VERY pricey, but cool to look at.
TIMES: I like how their hours are long-​makes it easily accessible for those who work so they can come afterwards if needed. I appreciate little things like that haha. They’re open 7 days/​week. 9am-​11pm. The area where you can sell back your books open from 9am-​8pm. The rare book room is opened from 11am-​7pm.
Overall, the prices of the books are what you would expect. Maybe it’s a dollar or two more just because it’s at this prestigious touristy location. You’ll definitely find some cool things here. Would totally recommend everyone to come!

Powell’s bookstore is definitely a cool place to visit; especially for tourists! This book store is more of a modernized store and offers a variety of different genres of book for everyone. I must note that before visiting Powell’s, friends told me that tourists MUST visit this store because it is famous! I thought this place would be similar to «The Last Bookstore» in Los Angeles, but Powell’s is definitely not the same. Powell’s is more of a legit bookstore than a hip art place so keep that in mind.
Although this place is one of the biggest or the biggest bookstore in the country, it is very well organized and the selection is just simply amazing. They have computers for customers to look up ANY book they want and each floor is a color coded room. Each room has it’s own specific genre etc. One could simply get lost in the selection in book forever. The staff was very friendly and approachable when I needed help finding several books.
The place becomes very easy to navigate once you explore around. Parking here is tricky because Powell’s is located in downtown Portland. On weekdays, expect to pay at the meters if you decide to drive into the city. Otherwise, carpooling or parking and walking to the store is recommended. Don’t be discouraged about the long cashier lines either! they move super quickly and checkout during the busy December holiday shopping was roughly 5 – 10 minutes.
The pricing of their books are also very reasonable! I love how they sell reused books too because the prices are just way more affordable for everyone. You can also go to Powell’s to resell your old books as well! I have not personally done this yet although I did see a line for people to do that as well.
TLDR: Powell’s is a modernized book store that is worth visiting if you’re in the area!

A highlight of our current trip to the Northwest and Portland in particular is the Powell bookstore on Burnside Ave. One of the last of a dying breed, the independent bookstore, they sell both new and used publications and a ton of related nicknacks that puts a smile on anyone’s face. «Something for everyone“certainly describes Powell’s Books as the entire operation covers a city block– now that’s one big bookstore offering.
The staff is friendly and they have people stationed in each of the color coded sections at their info. tables to assist bewildered customers in finding their literary treasures in the vast cavern of the printed word.
The color coded rooms have over 3500 different sections to meet the needs of the fussiest bookworm. If they don’t have it, the book is probably not found on the open market or might check their rare book section if your wallet can take the hit. They do house approximately a million books so you have to figure your chances are good.
One could literally spend days in this bookstore and not be bored with the selections. Since Portland is usually a rainy environment I can see why this staid institution has endured for such a long period.
Powell’s City of Books opened in 1971 making it 44 years old in 2015. May you celebrate another 44 years of great offerings to Portlanders and the world.

Dies ist der beste Buchladen der Welt. Es gibt eine riesige Auswahl an Büchern, sowohl gebrauchte als auch neue, man findet einfach alles, über mehrere Etagen verteilt. Dazu haben sie eine sehr große Auswahl an Zeitschriften und Zines. Zum Ausruhen und Stärken gibt es ein nettes Café mit gutem Kaffee und leckeren kleinen Speisen und Kuchen. Großes Kompliment, es gibt sogar veganen Kartoffelsalat. Beim Stöbern kann man hier gut einen ganzen Nachmittag verbringen.
Man kann auch seine gebrauchten Bücher hier verkaufen.

Powell’s was my second stop (first stop was a visit to Voodoo Donuts) while visiting Portland. We loaded up the parking meter and used that as a deadline for leaving the bookstore (because we would’ve stayed there all day otherwise).
Books, books, everywhere. I appreciate that I can find used and new copies of books mingling together on the shelves. I’m a used book buyer, but I’m pretty picky about the condition, so it’s nice to have several to choose from. It’s also nice when a used hardcover edition is cheaper than the paperback. I’m a browser when it comes to bookstores. I usually forget the second I walk in what I’m looking for, so I have to spend my time perusing the shelves trying to remember what I wanted to buy. It was hard to limit myself to just five books.
Powell’s is definitely a must-​see if you’re in Portland, if only to understand what the fuss is all about.

I wish I could teleport so I could be here all the time. When I was visiting last summer, I had to buy a new backpack to take all my purchases back with me on the train ride home. Their used fiction is beyond phenomenal. Out of the 40 books my boyfriend and I bought, less than 10 were new. These sorts of finds were unheard of to me before Powells. Love it x1000000.
