3rd Place 2016PDX Take Out Dim Sum Throwdown So this is my first stop on my PDX dim sum tour. I’ve eaten a ton of dim sum because it is one of the main things Chinese families do as far as socialization, eat eat eat then eat some more. LOL Unfortunately so true. OCSR is an OK venue 1 block from the Fubonn asian market. I was picking up some stuff at Fubonn to make bahn mi and decided to get some take out dim sum. I decided to get the same 5 items at each of the restaurants on the tour for a fair comparison. I am going to take out at all of the restaurants because that’s what we usually do. I am part Chinese so the dine in cart experience is no big deal and something I only do if I am with a group. So of the 4 items I would rate: har gow 3/5, sui mai 3/5, bean curd roll 3/5, pot sticker 3/5, baked char siu bao 4⁄5. Total score 16⁄25. Thick doughy skins, filling not really flavorful, reminds me of the take out dim sum at the 99 Ranch Markets. The cost was about $ 17. Service was surprisingly good and they didn’t screw up my take out order. Unfortunately mediocre service is the norm at dim sum restaurants. Overall the dim sum was average, not great, but not terrible either with the exception of the baked char siu bao which I would return to purchase. It was pretty good, ample tasty filling with light pastry. It’s a good item to bring to pot lucks because they can sit out for hours and most people like them although they do have pork in them. On to the next one…

This restaurant is breaking the Oregon law by serving Shark Fin soup. I understand it is delicacy, but with as estimated 35 million sharks slaughtered every year, and the oceans struggling with the dwindling shark population, I think it should follow the law and find other things to cook, because, honestly, a lot of their food is really good. I didn’t want to throw a scene tonight, but I won’t be back.

I was so pleased with my visit to Ocean City. I had been craving Dim Sum for weeks, and finally quelled my craving. I arrived with a party of 4 on a Tuesday, and it was crowded already! They have a decently sized parking lot which was a welcomed sight. We got a table, but not soon after we were seated was the entire place packed. It was typical Dim Sum options and service — ladies push carts around, you asked what they have, they show you, if it looks good you say yes, or wait for another cart with different options. Some of the things we ordered were the BBQ Pork buns, rice in the leaves(which come with meat in them too), meatballs, ginger chicken dumplings, beef dumplings, rice noodles… Just to name a few. All were delicious and hot! 4 people ate until we were very full and the bill was only $ 28! Such a deal. The only downside to this place is when you want them to add up your bill — it was like pulling teeth to flag someone down for us to pay. I will for sure be returning to Ocean City the next time i have a Dim Sum craving. Also I want to try more of the offerings that i was too full to taste on this visit.

I am from California and we came as a group of four. The seating was fast as we got there at 10:30am. The food was pretty up to par to my expectations. The servers swarmed pretty fast to cater to us. I loved the chicken feet even tho the girlfriend doesn’t like it. They had youl ja gwy(Chinese donut) with preserved egg porridge! It was delicious and great to keep us warm outside. The place was clean and they filled our tea. Next time I would come to try their entrée dishes besides just dim sum.

Wow, usually I value the food experience way more then the service, but this was just ridiculous. After asking three different waiters, it took over an hour for them just to bring us water, over 45 minutes for someone to take our order, and all said and done it was 2 ½ hours before we had finished our meal. I got up to ask a server who was clearing another table for our check and to go boxes. Admittedly, the food was delicious and a great value for the price, so we will try this again for takeout. Definitely never coming back for tableservice.

Went on Christmas morning. The place was very crowded and cramped, but the food was delicious. It helps to have someone in your party who is willing and able to aggressively flag down servers.

Delicious. But, bad services. I asked for the water many times, it delivered when we finished

Hi from Washington State! The Bae and I visited Ocean City during a weekend trip I took to Portland recently. It was pleasant. I would actually give it 3.5÷5, but alas, you cannot give half stars. Location/Atmosphere: can’t say much about the location as I’m not from around the area, but the place was nice and clean. It definitely looks«fancy» for Asian restaurant standards; it looked like a place the holds more traditional Asian wedding receptions. Not sure though :) It’s pretty loud in there with the hustle and bustle, but not overbearingly so. Service: We went for breakfast(10:30 am) and were seated immediately. Restaurant was getting real busy after that too. I love cart dim sum because waiters just go around pushing the cart and offering you various dishes. The waiters were nice and we got pretty much everything we wanted. It’s hard if you know what you want but don’t know what it’s called, but if you describe something to a waitress pushing the cart, they’ll pull out dishes that might be close to what you’re looking for, if not what you’re looking for. Food/Pricing: Yum! Dim sum for breakfast is perfect. The food always came out warm. Attached is a picture of everything we ate. Included are: garlic veggies, shrimp dumplings, shu mai, another kind of dumpling?, and some runny custard buns(a sweet dessert). Not pictured are some pork and ginger pot stickers we got. DEFINITELYRECOMMENDTHOSE. So freakin’ delicious! Everything else was pretty good. I’ve definitely had even better dim sum in other restaurants, but this was pretty good! Especially for the price. Total came out to be about $ 25 I believe, which is great for 2 people looking to be full! Definitely would recommend this place if you’re looking for a yummy Asian breakfast. Or I guess you could come at other times too, but let’s be real, breakfast dim sum is just better. :) I would visit here again if I was in the area again. Happy eating :) –Ammy

Best dim sum in Portland. Try the sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaves, cilantro stuffed dumplings with shrimp, and fresh baked, scorch your mouth egg pastries. Enjoy the loud chatter of happy families around you and forget for a second that you are in the whitest city ever. It’s not SF or NYC but it will satisfy and deserves a five star rating.

Tasted authentic. Food came at a reasonable interval of time, was nicely presented but most of all tasted delicious

I’m really impressed. I moved up to Portland from Los Angeles and was concerned about my dim sum options. The reviews for Ocean City aren’t great, but this place seemed to be the closest to what I’m used to having in LA and SF. I was surprised but the dim sum was actually MUCH better than I expected. The service was inattentive(what do you expect on a weekend??) and the place is kind of a dump. but the food knocked my socks off. Didn’t get too adventurous but everything I tried was sublime. — har gau(shrimp dumplings) — siu mai(pork dumplings) — lo mai gai(steamed rice in lotus leaves w/meat and veggies) — haam sui gao(deep fried glutinous rice dumpling with pork) — baked cha siu bao(bbq pork buns!) — pai gwut(short ribs) — dan taat(egg custard) Can’t wait to come back!

Of the Chinese places I have been to in Portland so far, this is my favorite. For one, they are probably the only place I know of that serves On Choy(aka Kang Kong/Water Spinach). It’s my favorite of the greens, but it’s so hard to find it out here. Well, technically it’s not on the menu and they don’t have it all the time, but they do almost every time I come. Second, salt & pepper shrimp! They do it right here(most of the time – there were a couple times when the quality fell short). You can choose to have the shell on or off. I prefer it on with the shell and heads crispy. The spices are spot on, and it really satisfies my shrimpy cravings. I love their menu variety. I feel it’s much more authentic Chinese, and it shows in their clientele. There will never be a time when you don’t see a Chinese family gathering around the lazy Susan-topped tables filled with a hot pot or two and some other tasty-looking dishes. I would like to try more of their menu, but I can’t bring myself to not get my usual. Maybe one day… oh, the crispy duck roasting is worth getting, for sure. At lunchtime, they do dim sum. They have a great assortment of dumplings, rice, meats, tofu, buns, sweets, and even chicken feet. Many of the employees don’t speak English very well and during the dim sum serving, they like you to choose quickly. Today, we ordered a la carte, but we also wanted some dim sum to munch on and to take home; and when the lady with the cart came by, I think my fiancé took too long trying to ask what the other table ordered, and she quickly looked down and noticed that we ordered from the menu and she immediately rushed away saying«oh you ordered!» We ended up getting some dishes of the carts, but it was a funny moment. The owner or manager is a friendly lady and always remembers us when we visit. Overall, I great place to eat. There are plenty of tables, they open later than most places, and they have delicious food!

Good dim sum! I grew up going to Chinatown for dim sum but it doesn’t exist there anymore. It’s well worth my drive to SE82nd to go to Ocean City. I’ve intended to try other places out there but can’t bring myself to do it since I already enjoy Ocean City. Why stray? My favorites are the siu mai and shrimp noodle roll. The place is efficient, even when busy. If there’s a line out the door the wait is short and you will still get seated soon. It could be cleaner in appearance and the dishes/cups should be replaced when cracked and chipped.

Best Dim Sum in Portland! Often I am the only non-Asian person here so I guess that means the food is authentic, or at least what the average Asian palate seeks. The carts come by often with all those regular goodies you would expect, Har-Gow, Shu-Mai chicken feet, dumplings, shrimp stuffed noodle, etc. The quality of the offerings is outstanding, I have had Dim Sum up and down the west coast and have found this place offers the best tasting and freshest. Service is always attentive and friendly, it’s busy, loud and boisterous in the dining room as people of all ages engage in convivial and animated conversations, which makes for a cultural experience as well as a filling and satisfying meal. I will be back often!

Regular dim sum haunt, so-so, nothing unique or special. This is old school: stoic service, moderately clean, mostly Chinese eat here(so definitely on the authentic side.) If there’s any major sporting event going on, you can be sure their TVs won’t be showing it. I do appreciate the little bowl of salted peanuts. Parking can be tight.

CAMEHERETWICEIN A WEEK! I was really disappointed with the dim sum in portland and decided to give this place a try, and boy was there a long line even at 2pm in the afternoon! It was an okay wait, 10 minutes for a table for two. This place needs to really find a system to cut down the wait time ! There were plenty of tables but not enough staff to work. The first time we came here for dim sum reintroduced why i love going to dim sum every weekend back in NY with my parents. Dim sum here, even at 9AM saturday or at 2PM saturday, is still great! Only come here for the shrimp noodle roll, the don tots, the siu mai, and the ha gow! Authentic cantonese style old recipes dim sum! Also came here for Chinese New Year Dinner! We were long way from home and just didn’t get a chance to have chinese new year dinner with our families. So we decided to come here for dinner, and ordered three dishes! Two dishes are plenty enough for two people.(we are big eaters!) We ordered the half a chicken dish, that comes with scallions and garlic green sauce, a clay pot of fish belly and tofu, and a stir fry of Yee Mein with seafood! We should of not ordered the noodles, because what we ordered was plenty enough food. The clay pot of fish and tofu was my absolutely favorite! I definitely recommend that! I don’t particularly like the chicken cold dish, came with only three good pieces of meat, the chicken seems a bit on the skinny side. Not worth $ 10 in my opinion. The seafood noodle was good, just the«seafood» that was supposed to be in it, was just not satisfying. Little pieces of scallops and mushrooms was all I found to be the«seafood component.» All in all i will be back for only dim sum!

Came here to celebrate Chinese New Year and it was really great. The restaurant is decorated like a traditional Chinese restaurant and the servers were friendly. I came with a party of 4 people and we all ordered 5 separate serving to share and a soup for the entire group. This was honestly too much food, but all of it was really tasty. I forgot everything that we order but I remember we got the fried dumplings with shrimp, hot and sour soup, and fried garlic fish. All of it was good. The fish didn’t taste so fresh, but all the vegetables and other meats seemed really fresh and delicious. They also supply each table with an endless amount of green tea. The tea is so good and fresh. They put actual green tea leaves in the water to give it a fresh taste. FYI: each item on the menu is set to serve a family. So if you come with just two people, one meal will be more than enough. Overall, this place was great and I was full.

Really solid dim sum! After living in SF for 9+ years, my baseline for dim sum is Koi Palace(amazing) and Hong Kong Lounge 2(almost amazing). There’s a hearty Cantonese community in SF so the dim sum is super awesome. Considering the small-ish Cantonese community here– this place is great! The Xiu Mai and hacao are delicious,

pretty solid restaurant for real Chinese food. it may not be best but it’s not American chinese and some of the dishes are actually impressive. Prices are reasonable as well. Be adventurous and try some things you normally wouldn’t. Dim Sum is decent here as well.
