Northwest Portland Dental

I moved to Portland just over a year ago and visited Dr. Deitrich‘s office based on the reviews I saw here, however, I did not have the same experience with the office that other Unilocal and Google reviewers had. Overall, I found their office to have a sales-​y and somewhat pushy approach to getting preventative fillings and cosmetic procedures done. After having the 4 fillings completed per the Dr.‘s recommendation I have had extreme pain and sensitivity in each of the teeth. I understand after a filling that it is normal to have some extra cold sensitivity and even some pressure pain in the first few weeks but it has been months and I have extreme pain in my teeth when chewing and cold sensitivity from just drinking water without ice. After several visits back to the office he replaced 2 of the most irritated fillings in hopes of fixing the problem but I am still in pain. At this point and several months after the fillings were first completed I am sad to write this review. The dentist seemed to be a very nice person. I am more sad that I chose to have the procedure (4 fillings) done and am reminded of the experience every time I take a sip of water and try to chew.
My warning here is to basically be careful if ANY dentist is telling you to get work done when you have never really needed work done before. Im 28 now and the only other work I have needed was a filling at 10 years old. Other than that I have visited my previous dentist regularly and she always praised my teeth and cleaning routine. The dentist also pushed whitening and having my 2 front upper teeth shaved down several times causing me to question my appearance.
When I left the office after my last visit where they replaced the filling I was told I would be getting a check up call the next day which I never received. This just hammered in the feeling that they pushing procedures on patients and are not concerned with the overall well being of their clients.

Second teeth cleaning was just as awesome as the first. Important to note they still have free cookies.

In my 40 years on this planet, I’ve seen a lot of dentists and hygienists. The hygienist Jamie and Dr. Dietrich are THE BEST. Today I had a full round of xrays, a cleaning and an exam which were thorough and pleasant. They even have noise cancelling Bose headphones and iPods to listen to. So excited to have finally found a great dentist in Portland!

I have been a patient here for about ten years, and have always had an excellent experience. Everyone is friendly, professional, and goes the extra mile to make you feel like a person and not a number. I always get the impression that they take the time to review each of the days appointments prior to the appointments starting. I wish more healthcare visits were like this.

Always explains options and costs. Highly competent service and friendly staff. Very professional and accommodating.

I want to preface this review by saying that I currently work in healthcare, and am going back to school right now to get even further into healthcare (I’m going to be a nurse practitioner). I also recently had a badddd experience with a dermatologist, so all that has me thinking often about what sort of care practices I want to implement as a nurse practitioner when I get there.
All that said, Dr. Dietrich’s office REALLY impresses me. Like, I actually ENJOY going to the dentist. The whole office is run VERY well. Dr. Dietrich himself is the nicest guy you can imagine. I can tell he genuinely cares about his patients, is humble and he takes the time to explain any conditions and options available. I really believe the rest of his office is great because he hires people as likable and skilled as himself. Sidenote: I also remember that I was reading a local magazine, Portland Monthly, within the last 6 months, and they had a piece on the best Doctors & Dentists in the Portland area, based on peer reviews (from other Doctors & Dentists). It was a really well-​designed peer review process, and Dr. Dietrich was listed as one of the top dentists. I felt even better about my decision to go to him for dental when I read that!
His office also has state-​of-​the-​art devices; for example, some sort of laser thing that can tell the risk of each tooth for getting a cavity, based on density (I think). They have a monthly payment plan — I pay about $ 30 a month — so semi-​starving college students like me can afford to still hit the dentist and eat too. They gave me a gift bag to welcome me as a new patient on my first visit, with all of the regular toothpaste, brush, floss, etc., but also with a little card, mug and gift card to Starbucks, which was a really nice touch.
I went in there for 6-​month check-​up this morning, and it was just as good as last time (my first visit): I was assigned to Jamie, who helped me last time as well, and she is literally impossible to NOT like. She’s super kind & considerate («can I take your jacket?» «how about I put your retainer in our cleaning solution while I clean your teeth?»), she is very thorough (my teeth have never felt cleaner than they do after my appointment), and she was very gentle on my teeth, gums, etc. I bet she probably read the book «How to Win Friends & Influence People» many times… or maybe she helped write it?
All this to say, I really enjoy their office. These guys treat me like family… like really dear family. If I move away for school, I’m gonna try to come back to Portland at least every 6 months in part because I want to keep coming back here. :)

Dr. Dietrich and his team do an excellent and dedicated job to providing comfort and coziness for dental visits and purposefully aiming to keep you smiling!
Does the team treat you quickly?
Procedures are always done in a timely manner, but I never feel rushed out the door as a «quick buck.» Dr. Dietrich and his team work at your pace. If you have anxiety of seeing the dentist, you should feel more welcomed here. His team has to work with the usual, sometimes terrifying sounds of drills and other dental gadgets, but they do an extraordinary job to make you feel comfortable with a blanket, a pillow, or a short talk to ease the nerves.
Are they expensive?
Dentistry uses many materials during any procedure and takes time from the dentist and the assistant. Any good dentist who invests the time and the effort into providing you the best care possible will also be an investment on your half as the patient.
For Dr. Dietrich’s office, I believe the prices are affordable and competitive with the professional market. Dr. Dietrich takes his time to explain the treatment plan and the reasons for that treatment plan. He is a conservative dentist in that only what needs to be done is done. He and his team provide excellent care but they don’t do unnecessary procedures to pad the bill.
Would I recommend them to a friend, a family member, or someone looking for a dentist?
Great experiences at Northwest Portland Dental with Dr. Dietrich and his team. I do hope every patient at any dentist receives the dedicated and treatment provided at this dental practice. If you’re not sure you’re getting optimal care, give this place a try!
