Here at North 45 we strive to provide all the warmth, intimacy, and social elements of a great neighborhood pub. Along with our upscale pub grub, dynamic beer menu, and our great wall of liquor, we hope you’ll choose us as your local pub to call home.

North 45 specializes in Mussels & Frites (fries) served 8 different ways. We also have an extensive Belgian bottled beer menu, local draft beers & over 100 whiskies.

Choose to sit in the intimate pub or out back on our 2500sqft patio. (Tented & heated in the winter). Full catering & private events are available. Minors welcome until 9pm.

History

Established in 2006.

The proprietors of North 45 are Josh Johnston and Jim Hall, two travel mates who have very different and eclectic life stories but have come together to bring Portland their very own upscale travel pub. The idea was born while backpacking through South America together in 2005. «We wanted to incorporate the intimacy and social elements of a pub, without labeling ourselves as an Irish or English pub. We figured a travel themed pub is something that everybody can relate to and/​or be the source of inspiration.»

Well maybe they don’t have 99 different Bourbons, but they have lots of ‘em and some really obscure ones I’ve never seen. They also have an Excellent selection of Scotch, and Irish, Maybe the best Irish collection in town, although I’m sure Kells and maybe Paddy’s would like to dispute that. At any rate, lotsa whiskey and plenty of choices, my liver is shaking in fear just from the very mention of going here.
They also make some of the most delicious Mussels you can possibly imagine, with a number of different flavors, it’s fun to try all the different ways mussels can be prepared. I will come back again and again.

Very cute and cozy little pub in uptown. So sad they don’t carry their jambalaya anymore, which was the best I’ve had at a restaurant. I mainly come here for the food, because it’s delicious, especially any of their seafood items, but they have really good drinks too. The muscles are served with a variety of broth flavors you can choose from. Great place to hang out!

I have to give this place props for an awesome outdoor patio and great Belgian beer selection. But I have to give it anti props for having mediocre food and service. And the final anti prop comes in the form of that mediocre food being overpriced. Damn.
Between the two of us we had a few Belgian beers, two different types of mussels, and a pickle plate. The pickled vegetables were fine, but nothing special. It came served with a tiny portion of chevre and what tasted like day old fred meyer white bread. We were starving so we finished it anyway, and then got our mussels — Embarcadero and Argentine. Both were fairly mild in flavor. I feel like if your «shtick» is going to be mussels (I assume when you have mussels and Belgian beers that’s a thing you’re going for/​trying to do well) you should probably do it better than they did. Both broths needing some punching up and let’s be honest, the bread could be an easy upgrade. Our server checked on us a couple of times, but wasn’t very attentive. We asked for water and were pointed to a water station (it was a slow night, I get it, but she could have offered to bring us some water) — and maybe when you server beer you could pour it in the glass? IDK. Just a thought.
4 drinks, 2 mussels and a pickle plate and was still over $ 90 with tip. Overpriced, under satisfied. The same patio is next door at 21st Avenue Bar and Grill for more affordable drinks, and plenty of good places in the hood to get good food.

Love this place, outside seating is really cute and comfortable, i remember being dat at picnic style tables and had an amazing Moscow Mule with titos which is my favorite and a lovely sandwich.

We sat out back on the patio and it was divine! Yummy drinks. The hubs had one of their sours and I had the margarita. I would skip the food next time. Or maybe we just miss ordered. Had the caprese appetizer and the calamari. The caprese was just two pieces of mozzarella with some rather pale hard tomatoes (and charred radiccio) and the calamari was a little sweet for my taste. But the service was great and we would definitely return!

The Moscow mules at North 45 are hands down the best that I have had in Portland! Although the inside is small, it is cozy and has a really open bar! The bar has so many different selections it requires a ladder to reach the top row! They have a food menu as well, but I have not had a chance to try it yet! I highly recommend stopping by for a drink!

It was a busy Saturday in NW Portland and every bar we walked by was filled with people. I had seen North 45 numerous times in the past and that’s where we planned to go. So, we got there and were totally surprised to see that there was absolutely NOBODY inside. That seemed odd. My «intuition» told me that maybe they had another room in back or something. Yep, a long narrow hallway out the back led to an outdoor patio.. .and THAT’S where all the customers were. We were greeted immediately back there by a friendly server and we sat at one of the many picnic tables. I enjoyed the patio because of its location which is totally isolated and far removed from the noise, hustle, and bustle of the street way out in front. A pleasant and peaceful atmosphere to sip cocktails and enjoy one of their many available Belgian beers. Overall, here’s all the good things about North 45: their drinks were tasty and reasonably priced, the service was friendly and efficient, and I just loved that great patio. I’ll come back soon and try their food too.

We came in for a drink having read about the hidden gem of a back patio. The patio is a little oasis in the upmarket Alphabet District with great picnic tables, outdoor TV, and copper top bar. Prices were reasonable for happy hour and regular prices. The two servers were preoccupied with a corporate happy hour takeover, but were apologetic about our forgotten appetizer and took it off the bill without asking. Would love to return on a less busy night.

Staff is super friendly! The drinks are amazing and the bar has some fun decorations! The atmosphere is fun and friendly. Next time we will try the food, but at least we know it’s worth coming back to!

I knew that North45 had good drinks, and a great happy hour… But the food for lunch was so good I’m in shock.
I had the Mac and Cheese with blackened chicken and truffle oil. Had to salt the dish but I like it salty. Amazing salad for a buck and a half extra (panzanella45– it has salami on it. Obvious choice.)
The staff are real live people who ask you how your day is going and bring you hot sauce when you ask for it. I couldn’t find a jerk in the place, and I genuinely enjoyed the staff and patrons alike.
Great meal, great service. I wish they would turn down the music a smidge. And also play old country or jazz music instead of the modern stuff. (Actually pretty good modern stuff, to be fair.) But hey, not everyone likes what I like. Everyone will like the Mac, though.

I stopped in here after sushi with a friend for a glass of wine. The bar was kinda cool. The waitress was busy. but boy it sure did take awhile for a glass of wine! I had the red blend and well it wasn’t that good. I didn’t drink it… in part because the tempura I just had was upsetting my stomach and so that wine would have made me barf for sure. I didn’t try the food there… but they looked to have a decent menu. Had a patio too. I could see going there again… but the service did seem kind of slow. No rush to go back really… meh…I could take it or leave it.

When it’s busy you will be there longer than you anticipated. Aside from that I was very happy with the service and food!
I got a savory Belgian waffle, bacon and roasted corn in the batter and blue cheese «syrup» drizzled on top! So delicious I ate the whole thing! I had some calamari as well, definitely better than most calamari I’ve had! (I like crispy babies in my calamari, so I wouldn’t order this if you prefer less crispy tentacle ring calamari.)
The space is beautiful, and a first date in the early evening could be quite romantic here. I could see lots of early dinners and then a trip to the movie theater a block or two away if I lived in this neck of the woods.

I live in the neighborhood so I frequent this place sometimes. On my birthday, I decided that I REALLY wanted calamari so I gave this place a try and it was one of the BEST calamari dishes I’ve had in Portland. Perfectly cooked and wonderful coating! The sauce was tangy and the rings were quite reminiscent of calamari that I’ve had in Italy. Sometimes the bartenders can be a bit stand offish and not really servy. The patio is lovely.

I’d like to give this place more stars, but the number of misses as compared to hits was too great for it to have been a decidedly above average experience.
I met up with a few friends here, and I just barely missed the happy hour menu. Not a huge deal. I ordered one of their specialty cocktails — a Cucumber Kiwi Smash. This was really good; it wasn’t too sweet.
For food I picked out the Surf and Turf Roll from the Small Plates section of the menu. I think my brain read between the lines and assumed there would be rice like some sort of sushi roll, but it essentially was a cold meat and cheese roll. It wasn’t awful, but it definitely wasn’t good. I ate about half and was done.
Other people ordered the Chicken Flautas (described as terrible), Sambal Green Beans (I tried one and they were really good), Mac and Cheese (I sampled this and it was good, but not amazing), and Garlic and Saffron Mussels (soooooo tasty). Honestly, I should have used context clues and determined that their mussels would be great considering the fact that 1⁄3 of their food menu was dedicated to them. If I come back, that is absolutely what I will order.
Service was on the slow side which contributed to the 3 star v. 4 star rating.
I really liked the outdoor patio with picnic tables. There were also heat lamps that were not turned on while I was there. Water was self-​serve out of a cooler.
This was a fun place to hang out and chat for a few hours.

I work in the area on Fridays and hate jumping into traffic! The alphabet district has got so many places to help kill time during that high traffic period!
My friend and I happened upon North 45 this past week! We totally weren’t looking for it. We were looking to go to Smokehouse 21 and just stumbled by this place first. Couldn’t turn down a great patio on a summer day!
It’s one of those patios that feel like a great back yard! There’s always a cool assortment of people there! Feels totally secluded by greenery! The entrance is from the back of the inside bar! Makes me feel like a found a secret hideaway!
The service is so lacking! I don’t buy that Portland attitude of nonchalance! I’ll go to Paris if I want that crap!
I ordered a salad and the steak Mac N Cheese! They brought them out together! I am the SLOWEST eater on the planet! I explained this and asked why they brought them out together! The response I got from the busser bar guy and our server was «that’s how we do things»! What the heck?
No one offered to make me happy! Plus there were flies everywhere! I couldn’t focus on my salad and my friend! I had to fight off flies!
The salad and Mac were mediocre at best! The Guinness was fab. Of course by the time I finished my salad, my Mac was cold!
The service has always been abysmal! I’ll still come back and enjoy a Guinness on the patio! I’ll bring my best «I don’t care» persona!
