We are a departmentalized, so that our stylists and technicians may further their skills in their specialized field. Our colorists provide thorough consultations before each color, perm, or relaxer and follow the service with a complimentary style-​out, leaving the client looking and feeling great. Our stylists also provide thorough consultations and shampoo and conditioning before each cut service, followed by a complimentary style out, leaving the client looking and feeling great. Specialty styles/​updos are also available, as well as wedding updos and complimentary consultations. We now offer Kera-​Straight Treatments. History

Established in 2012.

MODA Studios is a brand new hair salon located in the heart of the historic Broadway district in Northeast Portland. We are a very experienced, great team of hairstylists with numerous years of training and education with current styles and color techniques. We pride ourselves in superb customer service, our long-​time customers, and continuous referrals over the years. We offer a unique and satisfying experience for each client. I am a previous ‘color specialist’ from Toni & Guy Hair salon for almost 9 years. I was a color educator at the Lloyd center Toni & Guy before I opened up MODA Studios hair salon. I currently work with 6 other great stylists which 3 others are also Toni & Guy stylists as well. MODA studios has been open for almost 4 years. I love my job and all the new people I get to meet in this wonderful industry! Hair is my passion and I enjoy learning all the new hair styles and technics when it comes to hairdressing.

I wish I could give this place zero stars. I saw Lani on my popular page through Instagram. The first to me I went for some highlights. I asked for Balayage and got the same color I came in with slightly more ash. I chalked it up to a fluke. Sometimes hair doesn’t cooperate. She talked to me about microbeads extensions and after a month of thinking about it. I came in for the extensions. I have never regretted anything so much. She over charged me for the hair and promised the extensions world last 3 months. They barely lasted 2 weeks. For $ 300 I got a 2 week hairstyle. I told her thinking she would fix it. She made zero effort, no refund, no nothing. Just took my money and moved on. I suggest anyone who reDs this avoid this salon altogether because anyone who would continue to allow Lani to work with such horrible customer service is suspect and I would not trust them.

I’ve been looking for a stylist to help with my hair on my side of town for a while. I ran across, Lani Freelander’s, page on Instagram late last year sometime and finally decided to ignore my salon anxiety and contact her. I’ve been coming in since February and it’s been wonderful!
My hair was so damaged before, so many split ends, longer in some spots, dry, etc. She helped bring it back to life! My hair is healthier, shinny and definitely looks better.
The salon itself is nice, I like the vibe. Small and cozy, it’s kind of sectioned off so there aren’t a bunch of stylist side by side. There is also a barbershop upstairs! They also sometimes run specials, the first time I came in was mid February around Valentine’s Day so I got a great deal on my service plus a mimosas and treat. I loved it!
Lani is very sweet and knows what she is doing. I’d highly recommend her! Check out her Instagram, she posts tons of pics of her work on there!

This review is long overdue– honestly I couldn’t even think about it long enough to write it without wanting to freak the f@ck out. But about a month has gone by so woosah, here it goes…
What I asked for: Neutral light brown from the darker (but faded) brunette I had before. I mentioned I was a bridesmaid in my sisters wedding the next day and I just wanted something simple and touched up.
Ceeane (?) said she wanted to add highlights because apparently my looked «mousy and boring» (…thanks!) and that I needed more for a wedding. Ok sure, you’re the expert right? But only a few and well blended… and God please make them subtle.
What I left with: I got the neutral light brown IN MY ROOTS ONLY because apparently dying roots into my hair would result in my hair looking more natural when it grew out– okay, I see where the logic is coming from there but let’s move down passed the inch you dyed around my part… BARBIE WHITE BLONDE EVERYWHERE (besides my mousy roots!) And for those highlights? Yup I still got those, but they didn’t turn out blonde, nope instead I got BRIGHT ORANGE STREAKS!!! WOW!!! Those streaks will totally match my orange bridesmaid dress! Gee thanks!
I angry cried all the way to fred Meyer, through the doors, to the box dye hair section and all the way home to spend an extra hour of my day box dying my hair the darkest shade of brunette I could find to cover the fuckfest I had just paid $ 120 for right before my sister’s wedding.
Next time I see the lady who referred me to Moda she will be getting a punch to the throat.

After going blonde, Lani Freelander, who claimed to know about sew in weaves charged me a total of almost 400 for the installment and for her getting the extensions on a «deal for me», it only lasted a week and so I ended up taking the tracks out myself since they were lose enough anyways, after returning for a normal hair was and dye and wash, she must not know what she was doing with a simple wash because my shirt on the back was drenched wet making for an uncomfortable appointment, I asked to go darker, she to used a temporary dye, leaving my hair a green color after just one wash after it was done. Telling me it was permanent dye, never in my life have I seen this, She smelled like straight marijuana while working on me and had her boyfriend sitting visiting the whole time, What an uncomfortable experience. Never again.

I went to see Melissa about a week ago because I abruptly reached a point of disgust with my hair’s ends. The stylist I’ve seen in Portland on other occasions — while terrific — moved to a studio on Mississippi. I have recently moved away from our old Alberta stomping grounds as well, so I decided to look for one closer to home (and with immediate availability). I felt great about Melissa right away, and seeing that she had a knack for «bringing long hair to life» I decided she was definitely the one for me. When I arrived she was warm, fun, and was so supportive of the look I was wanting. She offered the perfect balance of giving great suggestions _​and_​executing/​unearthing what I asked for. I will be booking with her again for sure.

I’ve driven by this place so many times without realizing it was a salon. This isn’t your swanky or hipster salon — in all honestly I probably wouldn’t have gone without someone recommending the stylist and the other great Unilocal reviews. The scheduling was flexible around work, and time on my hair wasn’t shared between other clients. There’s parking available on both sides of the salon and large windows that provides a ton of natural lighting.
I am super happy with the color correction, ombré and re-​shape by Amanda (see the photo I added).

I got my haircut by Rabecka! She is amazing. Formally of Toni & Guy. I told her how I liked to style my hair and what I felt my problem areas are and she mapped a haircut plan for me that worked perfectly. She’s easy going and great to talk to also. My kind of people. I walked out with it expertly styled and feeling like a super model.
The décor is very pleasing, open and airy, comfortable and calm. The shop is clean and tidy. All of the lady’s are really nice.
There is an ample amount of parking. Both sides of the building and 2 hour parking on the street.

Wonderful & experienced staff! I went to Ceanne in August to have my hair cut and highlighted for my cousins wedding. She started my morning with a cup of coffee and a bottle of water, then she asked me specifically what I wanted my hair to look like, what colors I wanted for my highlights, and then she went to town. While she was working it was more like talking to a friend then a complete stranger, and two (maybe three) short hours later I had a very beautiful and fresh hair style for the wedding. I will go back to MODA studios every time I come back to Portland.

I started going to Rabecka in 2002 and have followed her everywhere since! She, by far, is the best stylist I have ever found and knows more about hair than anyone I’ve ever met; everyone I’ve referred to her (both men and women) have always said the same thing and love what she does. Even though I now live in Seattle I still travel back to Portland specifically for her to cut my hair — she’s seriously that good and someone I highly recommend!

I think everyone at Moda is great, but I’m partial to Christina Watson. She is amazing! I wouldn’t trust anyone else with my hair. She has a great sense of style and will give you an honest consultation. I gave her free reign on my color and I’m so glad I did… I get compliments everywhere I go. Find Moda Studios on FB and make an appointment with Christina, you won’t be disappointed.

Until I met Amanda I hadn’t been to the same salon more than twice for most of my life, mainly because I was so unhappy with my haircut. I have been visiting Amanda for 2 years now and I couldn’t be happier with my hair cut.
Don’t get me wrong, I’d go anywhere for the right hair cut but Amanda listened to what I want, made suggestions and I’m always happy with the results. It’s like she’s the hair whisperer, she just knows what’s going to work best for my hair type and I don’t question her at all. Besides that, Amanda is probably the nicest hair dresser I’ve ever had and if you’re lucky enough to get an appointment with her I’d take it.

Lani Feelander is amazing. I wanted to get my hair lightened for the spring/​summer time but I didn’t want to go too light. She did my hair perfectly. We went with an ombré/​balayage look and I love it! If you go to her, I promise you wont regret it!

Been coming to Laura for years! She is fabulous and always meets my needs! I come in with an idea I want and she helps and suggests what will look the best. I have very thick hair so for someone to be able to tame it in it’s self is amazing! I highly recommend Laura at moda studios!!!

Laura Huckfeldt is a hair goddess! After years of horrible hair cuts I finally decided to do some research and find someone who is skilled at cutting my type of hair. I found Laura on Unilocal from when she worked at Studio Luxe and tracked her down at Moda Studios.
My hair is thick, long, coarse and frizzy. I made sure to warn her so that she could schedule me accordingly. Most stylists don’t expect me to have so much hair that they end up double booking me.
Laura has truly crafted her skill and is an expert in cutting horse mane type of hair. Most stylists have no idea how to approach my hair but she was every bit confident. She walked me through everything she was doing and gave me lots of tips on how to treat and maintain my mane. Have you ever had an awkward silence type of cut? Well you won’t get that with Laura. She is extremely outgoing and personable, she’s the type of chick you could tell your whole life story to lol.
I have never been so satisfied with a hair cut. If you think you have similar hair to mine and have never had an amazing haircut please give Laura a call. I guarantee you will love what she does!

You’ve heard of people having their person? Well Laura Huckfeldt is my person.
I found Laura via Unilocal actually. I was looking for someone who knew what do with Asian hair. not the stick straight kind, the one that’s straight at the top and gets unruly towards the end. I’ve got one of those. I’ve always joked that my hair is a test of skill — if I go to someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing, it’s just bad news bears.
Laura knows her sh*t.
She takes time to understand what you want, if it makes sense for your hair and lifestyle, and comes up with nothing short of FABULOUS. And you’d know, because as your hair grows it still looks good. That’s what I’ve been enjoying with Laura. I could go short and long and it still looks damn good.
She is seriously a miracle worker… and she is my person. :) And I don’t mind sharing, make her your person too!

Stacey is a master hair cutter. A true artist. Can’t say enough and so glad I found her. I give her 10 plus starts. And all the girls are very talented and nice.
The only reason I did not give this 5 stars is because the new shop felt really drab. The traffic I had to hear because the door would not shut and see whizzing by was a real turn off. I know these ladies are just getting started and it’s a work in progress that I am sure will be amazing upon my next visit. If it were me, and I know it’s not, but if it were, I would hang red sheer curtains and keep them closed all the time because that view is not an asset. Maybe get some cool chandeliers, better lighting and display local artist.

I’ve been seeing Annette for years and she is a master. I tend to bring photos of haircuts I want and every time she knocks it out of the park.

I came here for a hair cut this afternoon. Stacy did a great job with my hair. I arrived about 20 minutes late but still they were able to accommodate me. I paid $ 55.00 for my haircut without tip. It’s not the cheapest place for a haircut but they really do an exceptional job here. This place is run by 4 hair stylist and colorists all from Toni and Guy which is an upscale salon which closed their Lloyd Center location about a month ago. The salon is still a work in progress so do expect some imperfections in the place. It’s in a great location on NE Burnside and parking isn’t a problem here. I would highly recommend this place for anyone who is looking for a quality stylist or colorist.
