I had a haircut and highlights by T.T. My friend recommended me this hair salon and I decided to give a shot. She literary scrabbled my hair when she was washing my hair, it was really really uncomfortable. Water was freezing cold as well at the beginning. Since I have typical thick Asian hair, I was hoping that she knows what to handle Asian hair. I explained that I was having hard time managing my hair, and asked her to thin out. The way she thinned out my hair made things even worse… Now my hair is all over the direction, and completely out of control. The haircut did not seem like there is a lot of technique involved.
Highlight: I asked for purplish dark red highlights on my dark brown hair, it came out ok-​but I was not completely happy about the result. I told her that I need to look natural since I work at the office, but It came out pretty noticeable Red. I went to walgreens right away and dyed surface of my hair black, and it looks so much better now. I also noticed that she was using same bowl of color that she was using for me to the lady who came in right after me to dye her hair red. I think she did not spend her time to listen her customer and take more effort to create custom color to each of her clients. They are definitely having a busy day, but it was a huge disappointment. The price was reasonable and she was really friendly, but I am not coming back.

If you have dark/​thick/​straight Asian/​Pacific Islander hair they know what they are doing!
I’ve been to Jovana twice and have had two different hair stylists and have had a great experience both times! My recent experience was with Tammy who was very welcoming! I came in with two pictures I wanted and referenced two additional pictures that were posted here on Unilocal,to my surprise she was the one who had done the hair in the pictures so I felt even more comfortable with her. she was very knowledgable and patient and took the time to explain what she felt would look good with my hair and skin color but still stressed that she would do exactly what I wanted. I love it and love her! My first experience was with Lina who was also very knowledgeable and kind! I recommend both ladies! They are wonderful.
Also, I requested an appointment the day before. The online booking was very easy and when the time I had selected was full they emailed me right away with the next available time slot. They do take walk ins!
Last thing, I felt that their prices were right above fair. My hair is long, dark and very thick so it takes a long time and effort to cut and color it. Tammy had given me a fair price to start and was honest in saying that next time it would be a bit more because of the type of hair I have. I was totally on board because aside from Lina, Tammy is the only hair dresser I’ve had that has taken care of my hair!

I’ve been here about 4 times since moving to Portland and I found it on Unilocal.I wanted Ombré hair like Gisele without paying $ 500. I moved here from Los Angeles so I wasn’t sure I’d find what I wanted — the standards are so high there!
Lina is my stylist and I’ve had an awesome style each time. She even did my hair for my wedding. People at my work always compliment my hair and I’ve referred at least 4 ladies & men to Lina. She is the best. So friendly and fast and wow she is like such a pretty Vietnamese Barbie but really down to earth! I have fun chatting w/​her each time. She manages her time really well and sometimes does another clients haircut while my hair color is processing but I never feel neglected. She gets me tea, magazines, she is the utmost professional. I feel so beautiful whenever I come here!

I had a bad experience here. I asked for really subtle highlights, and kept emphasizing that I wanted it to look really natural. My hair came out basically platinum blonde– and it very, very much looks dyed.
Also, they washed my hair with freezing cold water, and when the stylist was combing my hair out after the cut, she was literally ripping through it – to the point where I took my comb and did it myself because I did not want her to butcher my hair any further.

Love this place they are priced well and very nice! Cute little location. Been there a couple times now and always leave satisfied!

Tammy is great! She listened to what I wanted and gave it to me when a much higher priced salon failed. She did not jeopardize the health of my hair either! Highly recommended

Got my hair done here so many times and not once was disappointing. They surely know how to work magic into your hair. Will definitely come back and refer all of my friends and family!

I went in to get eyelashes done. It was alright. They weren’t as even and good as I thought. I glad who ever helped me out told me about mixing the good quality and some lower quality to build a better look. But afterwards, as my first time, they were heavy on my eyes. It’s a new sensation and I could handle it. But who ever did my eyes mentioned to me that it’s pretty but said I shouldn’t get them again since my eye lashes are short. :(I just wanted to look pretty

Just got my first haircut at jovana. Quick, almost no wait, great cut, super nice people… All at half the price I’m used to paying at trendy, east-​side barbers. My wife has been going here for a couple of years after they were recommended by a friend, and I’ll never go anywhere else.

Not a fan of this place at all. My feelings echo some of the other reviews. The staff wasn’t friendly and for an hour and a half the stylist barely spoke to me. Instead, she scrubbed my head so hard, I felt like my scalp might bleed and she rushed the job. Not only did the highlighting end up looking stripy at the roots, my grow out a couple weeks later looks like it should after a month or more in some spots. Poor quality… definitely not coming back.

My cousin has been going to Jovana Salon for a few years now and she always raves about the team, color choices and great prices. So, I thought to myself — why not go to a salon she highly recommends? After all, it never hurts to add color to hair and life.
TT was my stylist today and she was great. I had 2 photos on Pinterest that I liked. I didn’t know which option would be the best since my hair is at the shoulder length. After discussing the possible outcomes based on the photos we decided on 1 outcome (ombré/​highlights). TT proceeded with mixing the colors and adding foil to my head. She works fast and doesn’t waste time. Shortly adding the necessary foil w/​color she stepped away to another client while Lina stepped in to do the another color. During this time my scalp was burning and I immediately thought it was an allergic reaction. Boy was I wrong! Lina asked if my scalp was okay and she also asked when was the last time I washed my hair. I told her its burning a little and washed it last night. Come to find out, that’s completely normal to feel the burning sensation but it could be more sensitive if the hair was washed the day before or day of. Lesson learned, it’s highly recommended to go to the salon with greasy hair. It’s going to get washed anyways. Once Lina was done, I sat in my chair for a little until TT finished up another client. The burning feeling eventually went away but it did feel like forever.
Fast forward, 20 minutes I went for a rinse, wash and conditioning. TT provided a head massage and washed my hair probably twice. At one point, I felt that her nails were a bit tough on my scalp but I’m glad it was. I had so much buildup/​dandruff to get rid of. The toughness did the trick along with a vigorous wash. Back to the chair for drying and straightening. When. TT was done, she handed me the ginormous mirror to check myself out. I loved the colors that was selected. It was a good turn out. I’m satisfied.
TT is a color master in my book. She’s outgoing and very talkative (which is good otherwise the appointment would be boring). The salon itself isn’t anything fancy but I didn’t mind. I was there to get my hair colored. Needless to say, mission accomplished and no flakes.
Keep in mind the following pointers:
1). Make an appointment and be on time
2). Don’t wash your hair prior to the appointment
3). American Express cards are not accepted
Overall, I would return again in the future. I had a great experience and would recommend Jovana Salon to my friends and family.

It pains me to have to update my review and I put it off for some time. After my second visit my hair seemed great — but once I washed it immediately felt dry and brittle and has continued getting worse breaking off 1−2″ at a time from the bottom. I have completely had to stop heat styling my hair for fear of making it fall out

Love love love this place! I almost gave up on getting my hair colored since I’ve been disappointed with the results at so many hair salons. But I’m glad that I gave Jovana Salon a try! This will Definitely be the salon that I will be going back to over and over again. My hairstylist Tammy and T. T (sisters) are awesome. They really know Asian hair and how to work with it. I came in a couple months ago with a hack job of a hair color done by a different salon. I had wanted to go lighter, with ombré and highlights. Tammy worked with my hair and got it to what I have been wanting.
I have really thick hair and it’s always was slow to grow in length. But with my first hair cut with Tammy i felt the difference, my hair felt lighter and I also noticed, it was growing much faster than before. I was sold!
For my hair length, texture and color, I paid about $ 130 (color, shampoo, cut, style); which for my thick unruly hair is an awesome and reasonable price!

Tammy and Lina both do a great job! This has become my go to salon. The staff is all kind, quick, and efficient. Best part is how reasonable the prices are.
Tip: make an appointment.

T.T. gave me the most beautiful ombré. She understood exactly what I wanted and turned my sorority girl highlights into the subtle, natural ombré I wanted. She was fast, professional, and gave a killer head massage. Overall a wonderful experience and great value for the money ($ 75 for a cut and color, plus he $ 25 I tipped).

I walked in at 10:15 am or so, and I was immediately seated by Tammy. She was great. She told me exactly how much it would cost and she explained to me everything. From my base color to the highlights, to toning it differently. I also wanted a tiny trim, but she explained why I needed my hair to be cut a little more than what I wanted. (split ends)
The whole experience was great. Everyone was friendly, prices are reasonable. My hair is layered down to my back and is very thick. I paid $ 105 including $ 20 tip for a haircut and highlights with deep condition. Speaking of which, she gives a great head massage. I wish I could just go in and have my hair washed by her. I definitely recommend this place. Ask for Tammy.

TAMMY — she never fails to do exactly what I want and then some. She not only is a stylist but a teacher. I’ve gained so much knowledge from her over the past year. I am a loyal customer because the service is awesome and you can’t go wrong with the price. I would recommend Jovana Salon to any of my friends and colleagues. I trust that they will get the job done and your hair won’t be fried/​damaged after your appointment.

Tammi was amazing! This was my first time and I for sure will be back! I got cut, color, highlights and she only took 2 hours.

They’re well staffed and super friendly. There’s little to no wait time. They’re cheap. They’re right by the newly opened Blue Star Donuts. They have given me and my boy the haircuts we asked for and are open to feedback before they finish.
I have long but wavy hair and haven’t asked for anything super complicated but I’ve been there twice now with two different stylists and they both did a great job. I even sent my boy there for a haircut (and a donut) and it turned out great. He can be picky with haircuts because he has very thick wavy hair and sometimes his head can turn out chunky. They did a GREAT JOB on his hair. The wait time has been incredibly short every time I’ve been there (a few minutes). For my lady haircut (no shampoo or style), it was $ 23, for the boy, it was $ 14. I can’t attest to the coloring, eyebrow work or fancy styles but when you’re in that chair, they work hard!

I was referred to TiTi at Jovana by a friend after getting a horrendous and insanely expensive hair cut at French Cut Hair in the Pearl. I asked for an ombré and got orange hair and the colors were not blended at all. I was charged almost $ 400 and hated my hair. I was in search for a well priced yet experienced stylist and I am SO happy I went with TiTi. Before she started to work on my hair we talked for 15 minutes about what I was looking for and I showed her pictures. She was incredibly patient and had some great recommendations. She spoke with me through the process which relieved a lot of anxiety after having such a terrible experience before.
My hair is now EXACTLY how I wanted it to be and she cut my hair beautifully. An added bonus was that she massaged my head for a good 15 minutes which felt amazing. To top it all off, she added 2 colors to my hair and gave me a cut for a quarter of what I paid before! Such a great experience I would highly recommend Jovana and specifically TiTi
