Jay’s Garage is a family owned full service automotive repair shop and gas station. Conveniently located in the heart of Portland’s central eastside on the corner of SE 7th and Morrison, we have been servicing and repairing cars, trucks, vans and SUV’s since 1981. All our mechanics are certified Master Technicians by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. Here at Jay’s, we take a proactive approach to comprehensive car care with emphasis on preventative maintenance and customer service.

Our gas station carries regular gasoline, bio-​diesel, and E85 and we are open 7 days a week. Jay’s is committed to selling gas that helps reduce emissions and is renewable. History

Established in 1981.

After serving in the Vietnam War, Jay Dykeman returned to Portland with $ 1500 to his name. He rented a Texaco station in Southeast Portland and began his auto repair business in September of 1971. Having no formal training, Jay started reading auto repair manuals and never looked back. As Jay says, «It was a good thing that I’m a reader.»

In 1980, Jay moved his garage to its current location on the corner of 7th and Morrison in Southeast Portland. Jay became known as the Honda and Subaru repair expert of Portland. In the early 1990’s, Jay quickly embraced advances in computer technology and updated his garage to correctly service the new computerized cars. The auto service needs were changing fast, and Jay shifted focus to proper preventative maintenance aided by computer chips than engine overhauls or exchanges.

Miles D.

Manager

Miles has worked for Jay’s Garage for over 11 years. He is an ASE Certified Master Technician and has been working on cars for over 30 years. Miles is an expert in many fields of diesel engines, import and domestic diagnostics and repairs, and even exhaust systems. He has recently taken on the role of Shop Manager, but still is very active as a Master Technician. We went here because the shop that normally does our oil change is closed for repairs, and after the service we got this may be our new shop. While they did our oil change they checked everything else like the brakes for no additional charge. Very friendly staff. They even took time to look at the car again when I thought the fuel filter had come loose. Just awesome. Very very impressed!!!

Jay’s garage was terrific! They got our 2000 Eurovan in on a Saturday. Mel, the mechanic, quickly diagnosed the problem via use of computer, explained the results very thoroughly, and completed the work in timely manner. And we received a discount on price as we saw their internet coupon! Mel and office staff were very friendly, very professional. I would gladly return! I give them my highest recommendation! Don R

I was just telling a friend about my experiences with Jay’s Garage, and it occurred to me I should write a review. Over quite a few years, Jay’s helped keep my tired older car running well and always provided kind respectful service without fail. When I compared prices, Jay’s was fair, but the service was the amazing bargain.
As far as the automotive work, there isn’t one thing I would change. All work was completed in the quoted time frame and for the quoted cost. All repairs held up.
I always felt lucky to have found Jay’s when I needed my first automotive repair in Portland and would never go to a different garage.

If I could give 0 stars I would. I brought my car into have looked at and they found some things I expected they’d find wrong. They then quoted me a price that was about $ 350 more than the place down the street (literally 3 blocks)… I asked them to match the quote. They pretty much told me off… I paid them the $ 100 fee that they charged me to tell me what I already knew was wrong with the car. It was frankly extortion and I would never ever recommend them to anyone.

I’ve taken my cars to Jays for several years. When our Honda van had transmission problems, they could have replaced it themselves. However, they suggested taking with Honda about them covering half the cost. The kicker is that the work would need to be performed at a Honda dealer. Jays Garage was looking out for our interests rather than his own. All other work on our cars has been great. Timely and they provide clear communication of what is wrong with the car

«We only want to see happy people here,» said Miles after I thanked him for going above and beyond to help me get my car back in shape. A lot of people in service industries say things like that, but I absolutely believe that of this staff.
This is my second time bringing my car into the shop. As a girl who doesn’t know much beyond how to change their oil, going to a shop can be a stressful experience.
Not even close to so with the people here.
Twice now, I have shown up at their desk in emergency mode — my 2000 Golf wasn’t starting. Twice now, Meredeth has made me feel incredibly welcome and cared for. Many more times (at least five conversations I can think of right now), Miles has taken time out of his day to explain to me what was going on in terms a computer nerd can understand and what needed to happen to fix it because he knew I wanted to understand my machine better.
When we came to pick up our car, I wish I would have snapped a picture. The staff’s genuine smiles after our several week ordeal would tell you what I already knew by then — these people truly care about the people they work with.
I will not take my car anywhere else.

GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!
I have gotten my biodiesel at Jay’s for a very long time. I had my 100,000 mile service for my Jeep Liberty Diesel done there a few months ago. It was spendy.
Earlier in the week my son took our 1998 Subaru Forester in for service so we could get the DEQ and have the car registration completed. My son called me saying it would cost $ 600. We needed new brakes, a new battery and some other work. I was shocked. They agreed to do the work for $ 400, which made me think I overpaid for my jeep.
But then the real kicker happened. Today my son took the car to Les Schwab and they said we did NOT need new brakes, there was still good life left. They did not charge anything. They did not try to sell tires either.
The moral of the story, be wary using Jay’s Garage.
I am sad to have to post this, but thought you should know.

After hearing about our bad experience, the owner of Jay’s got in contact with us (in fact, he tried several times before we called him back, thinking there was really no way he could come up with a solution) and told he was sorry, and unaware of the entire situation. Miles went above and beyond, not only fixing the problems with our car, but also gave us a free loaner car the entire time ours was in the shop.
It’s really nice to know that people still care about customers, and Miles made sure we were happy in the end. Thanks Jay’s Garage! We will be back.

I broke down in rush hour traffic and was fortunate enough to be towed to Jay’s. I was on the final leg of a cross country trip and desperate to get home to Newport. The expert mechanics worked hard to help me out. I watched them act as a well co-​ordinated team to make all the necessary repairs. They were fast and efficient, but very thorough and conscientious. Every one was pleasant and courteous to me and I felt I had made new friends by the time I drove away with many happy waves.
My old car is running like a fine watch now!

STAY AWAY FROM HERE!!!
I am not one to write a negative review but this has by far been my worst experience since I moved to Portland a few years ago.
I had to fix one part in my car and was quoted a $ 200 price for everything. Upon my return 1 ½ days later they said everything was working fine and so I went to pay my bill.
$ 1200 later… Not the $ 200 I was quoted they had added several additional repairs that were not mentioned to me. I paid half of it not knowing what to do at the time, and they still were trying to collect the other half of the money.
By law it was illegal that they did not call me to do any additional repairs to my vehicle before doing so. They were fully aware and broke the law!
These guys are crooked! They will try and pinch every penny out of you and take advantage of you in any way possible. You are better going to a place that originally quotes you a more expensive price because chances are that it will end up being cheaper anyways.
I would NEVER recommend anyone going to Jay’s Garage as they are crooked and WILL take advantage of you.

We have been bringing our VW Jetta wagon to Jay’s for 5 years. They provide good service with clear communication. When our car was recently hit, Lou helped me navigate the insurance process (first time), and went above and beyond in terms of getting me connected to a body shop for the repairs.

Needed same day service and jays delivered! Called 3 other auto shops that couldn’t perform same day service, jays got it done in an hour. They were honest friendly and didn’t try to upsell like many other shops. Nice location within distance of many places to relax and grab a bite to eat. Highly recommend

My car broke down on the side of the road, so I googled «VW Mechanic» and found this one close by. I rolled my car in there, and they fixed the problem for about the same price as my regular mechanic down in Salem, but with better customer service, faster time, and a better attitude. I even got a ride to a rental car place, plus follow up phone calls. AMAZING Customer service, and amazing work done on my car.
I am not sure how they compare price-​wise to other places, as my car is an expensive import that always costs a ridiculous amount of money to fix. I feel that they are not the cheapest option, but remember… you get what you pay for.

BEWARE!!! While this shop tries to claim the neighborhood mechanic, they use the same tactics as all the others. Do not let the nice bubbly girl who makes the calls fool you.
They up sell and do not fix the problem the first time. I have taken my 2002 Accord there, which is driven by my grandma and only has 64k miles.
The problem is the AC. I have already dropped almost $ 1k bucks to get this thing fixed. I was hoping this third time, it was a loose bolt. No its now another $ 300 plus repair.
GIVE ME A BREAK. This is a HONDA with half the mileage that should be on this. I was really hoping they would help me out. NOPE

I have been working with Jay at Jay’s garage to get my 2000 CR-​V to pass DEQ. He knew loads more about this than my long-​time mechanic, and knew what the problem was, what to replace, and provided a complete estimate before making any repairs. When I went back to DEQ to try for the 7th time to pass, (two weeks after his repair), I still saw the computer showing Not Ready status on the evap and catalytic readings. I just left his shop, and how did he help me? He made more repairs, all free of charge.
Not only is Jay honest, straightforward and smart, but his shop uses modern technology, savvy mechanics, and great customer service – all of which has combined to win my future business.

This was the second of four mechanics I went to on my trip-​from-​hell. I was about to head back to Los Angeles from Portland, when all of a sudden my car stalled out and died. And died again. And again. And again. Shit.
Called AAA, had them tow it to a garage of their choice seeing as I know nothing about garages in Portland. They recommended Jay’s, so I said sure. The woman at the desk was friendly and helpful. One of the guys took my car and got to work on finding out what was up.
An hour later they’d determined it was an electrical component in the ignition. Saving my life, they managed to call around and find the part (it was almost 4 at that point) and got to work on installing it, as well as some new spark plugs that the guy recommended. Got it all done, and then they were nice enough to wait around while I dealt with a totally insane credit card issue that took almost an hour to resolve, and were totally nice about it.
My only thought was the work seemed a little spendy, but all the work was necessary and their customer service made it an experience worth recommending to others. The guy who worked on my car was awesome to the point that I want to go back just to hang out with him. I got a courtesy call the next day to ask if I’d made it down to where I was headed alright, which I wasn’t able to return but was very pleased to get.
