Hotel Modera Portland

Two major problems that made my most recent stay an unpleasant one. First, the room was near the elevator. Every time it moved, I heard a screeching noise. Good thing I’m a sound sleeper. Second, a handle on the tub had broken off and been placed neatly at the side of the tub. So no switching from bath to shower. No sympathy at checkout, just the comment «some people aren’t bothered by the elevator noise.»
I wrote to the hotel on their website and received no reply.

Hotel Modera gets points for taking an old motor inn and converting it into a nice boutique experience. At least, I got the impression it was something else once. The walls between rooms are paper thin so if you have a rowdy neighbor it will be as though you are at the party too. When we mentioned the noise at check out the hotel reimbursed the parking valet charge. It was good for us otherwise. We were in town to see a show at the Keller Auditorium just two blocks away. The beds are comfortable. The staff was fine. I had left my phone in the car and before I missed it the valet was knocking on our door to return it to me. I think that says something. Since the hotel supplies a Nexus tablet to guests I didn’t use the hotel WIFI.

Definition of a Portland Boutique hotel:
Young guys and gals with groovy haircuts running the hotel counters and valet.
Artsy and bright décor throughout the lobby and every room.
A little hotel shop that is basically a bookshelf.
A little restaurant open for breakfast and all the way until after dinner drinks.
An iPad in every room where you can get room service, shipping assistance, get your car, checkout, or read the news.
A tiny room with barely enough floor space to unpack your suitcase.
A bathroom with soap, shampoo, and conditioner dispensers built into the wall.
Responsive and easy to change heating and cooling system.
A screaming neighbor at 1 am. Hmm, that may have been an orgasm but am not really sure. Better call the cops just in case.

Seriously overrated. Stayed here for the last New Years Eve. Clearly understaffed (not busy to the point of overwhelm, just understaffed). We paid $ 30 extra to have 4 guests in a room with 2 queen sized bed, but they only had enough bathrobes, coffee, etc for 2 guests. We paid extra thinking we would get service for 4 people, otherwise we would have just reported 2 guests, like normal people would do. We had to ask twice for the extra bathrobes. We asked three times for more coffee in the room for the morning and never received it. We booked this place knowing it was a 4-​star hotel, but seemed to me like 3-​star. They provided bathrobes, but they had holes and were not that nice. Seriously…
What made my opinion even worse was that only a few days before I stayed at a motel in Newport that was a quarter the price, would have been classified a 2-​star (given that it’s a motel), but had better service, much better view from the room, and they didn’t provide anything with holes.
Hotel Modera is not terrible by any means, but for the price and classification of a 4-​star hotel, it sucks.

The worst hotel experience I’ve ever had.
Check in took more than 20 min. The staffs were very unprofessional. They don’t know much about local restaurants, the swimming pool is not even inside the building. You have to go one block to use ²⁴⁄₇ gym and it doesn’t open ²⁴⁄₇. When we asked the exact address for the gym location, they didn’t even know the address and gave us wrong direction as well. The room doesn’t have sound proof. I woke up in the middle of the night and heard couples having sex. Never experienced that with hotels.
The bedsheets weren’t even tucked in. The sheets were there but the mattress pad wasn’t even on the right place.
There is free water in the lobby and it was empty so we asked for the water and took them more than 10 min to bring us small cups of water from the washroom.
I saw them dealing with other hotel guests and everyone was complaining and they weren’t handling well either.
We spent $ 260/​night and this hotel is ridiculously overrated and I wouldn’t go back there to spend a penny. Not worth it.

I liked staying here a lot. I think it was worth the money ’cause it was really fancy and modern, and close to a lot of cool stuff. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful – I was clueless and they didn’t make me feel bad about that even a little bit.
Important notes:
— There are good full-​length mirrors in the guest rooms – I still remember how good five years later.
— The restaurant downstairs is super tasty and the wait staff is really nice! They gladly took back/​replaced a dish I ordered that I thought didn’t have meat, but then it did.
— Don’t miss the patio with plant walls and gas firepits with swank glass bits in them. We don’t have that kind of stuff where I live.

The quality of the room was poor. Looks like this was an old hotel that just put in new furnishings. The shower was not clean and they blinds didn’t close all the way.
They also charged me $ 75 more than they quoted me for without any notice. They said they emailed me the receipt, but that never arrived. Had to dispute the charge for them to even respond to me. Do not recommend in any circumstance.

I have stayed at this hotel for about 10 years. Unfortunately, things here are going downhill. The price has been going up and I have no objection to places getting the best rate they can. But the property is deteriorating. The room I was given on the latest visit had a wet carpet and a wet wall, likely due to a plumbing leak. The second room I was given had lots of ants crawling around on the walls. On top of all this, the front desk help was highly disorganized and only marginally polite. I decided to change my October reservation to the Paramount.

I really enjoyed my stay at Hotel Modera. It is a very modern hotel with nice amenities. The room was clean and comfortable although it was a bit small. We only stayed one night so the size didn’t really matter. The soaps smelled amazing!
They provide a small tablet in the room where you can request various services like additional towels, late checkout, or to have them bring the car around. I thought this was a nice touch!
The location is very convenient — we were able to walk wherever we needed to go.
I will definitely consider staying here again when I am back in Portland.

I downgraded my room to a less expensive room. They overcharged me $ 50. I called them and they said it was a deposit for the bar and other items in the room, and that it would be returned to me. I never got it and called them again, and they insisted that was the correct amount.
Other than that, it was a nice room!

Rooms are very small. The layout of the rooms is quite odd. In order to close the bathroom door you must open the closet door. In order to close the closet door you must open the bathroom door. The hotel seems to be very old with very thin walls. You can hear the neighbors talking and just the regular voices. You can even hear someone hanging clothes up in their closet in the next room. These are fairly expensive rooms so you may want to check elsewhere before booking a room at this hotel. The staff was nice.

Convenient location. Clean rooms. Stayed here twice within 6 months and both times the A/​C has shut off in the middle of the night. Only to wake up to a hot room. The fan doesn’t even work either! So then when taking a shower the steam sets off the fire alarm in the room. Not really ideal when you’re getting ready in the morning!
If they fix the HVAC/​Air conditioning issue we MIGHT stay again. But seems unlikely given the fact that it hasn’t changed since 6 months ago…

Really like the modern ambiance of this Hotel. Staff is very friendly. There is a limited outlet issue so if you carry lots of gadgets be prepared. Great location and lots to do nearby. I would stay here again !

No response from management at all after numerous calls and writing to corporate. This company does not give a crap.

Hotel Modera was in a very convenient location, friendly staff and a very clean, sleek looking lobby.
I was pleased with the service and even was impressed with the tablet provided in the room from which you could do most of anything like have your car brought around and waiting for you downstairs, order room service, request towels, etc etc… all from this tablet. On check out, a staff member showed up to our room ready to bring all our luggage downstairs and loaded into our car. All we had to do with go downstairs, pay the balance and get into our car. Extremely convenient.
One downside for me was the size of the room itself. After paying $ 600+ (includes $ 25 pet fee, parking service and room service) the room itself was quite underwhelming. It was a King Garden Room. I think the price and the website’s presentation had me expecting a bit more in the room than there was. I’ve spent nights in Vegas paying a little more at around $ 300 a night and was given very large rooms with impressive bathrooms… I’d imagine Hotel Modera’s suites would be impressive, but do not expect much in size for their other rooms.
The other con would be there is no real availability for private parking (I suppose you could drive around the blocks and find curb parking if you don’t mind coming downstairs and paying ever however-​many ours, valet is a must. If you do not budget the additional $ 32 a night, you might feel a bit miffed.

We stayed here one night, on our wedding night. Overall, this is an upscale 3 star hotel charging 4 star prices.
The valet service was fine, but the staff looked unprofessional in their clothing. Check in was efficient and also just fine. The king room was very small. Well appointed, but the size is tiny! The hotel feels like an older hotel that has been updated within the last 5 – 7 years, but there’s nothing outstanding about it. And the room was SO hot, we had the temp set at 66 and it never cooled down.
I don’t think we would stay here again. it’s not awful, but there’s nothing special or unique either.

Very stylish, boutique hotel with outstanding customer service, hip décor, and very good (albeit pricy) bar/​restaurant. My room was an efficiency. It worked for me as a single business traveler, but it would pretty cozy for two. That said, the room was nicely furnished, with good quality bedding and towels. I liked the view over the patio.
Unfortunately, the A/​C System is not that hip. It kept blowing hot air. I was told that when it’s cold outside, the building heater somehow overrides the room A/​C!?! Never heard that before. They suggested leaving my window open. Well, it worked when cool outside. But when the weather warmed, the patio got too noisy… and still the A/​C was still hit or miss.
If they can fix the A/​C, I definitely would stay again.

Let’s just say that they really do know how to advertise very well, so I will give them that. They do have a pretty nice outdoor patio area, too bad it’s almost pretty much useless since it rains so much!
Location of the hotel isn’t the best, it’s on the further southern end of Portland, so not really close to the breweries and such. The rooms themselves weren’t that impressive, very small rooms, hardly enough outlets– none that were near the bed stands.
Another thing that was really irritating and probably the worst was the air conditioning. Our AC just simply did not work, if anything, it felt like there was a heater on in the room. The room stayed at 75 the whole time, even though we’ve changed it down to 65. The hallways were cooler than the room we were staying in… what’s up with that?! You’d think that a nice hotel such as this would have their AC properly working. Needless to say that sleeping was always on the warmer side of the pillow as there was no cold side.
Though the service wasn’t bad and the décor of the place is rather nice, I would suggest perhaps trying elsewhere. There’s nothing that really stands out about this place, but I do think they are a pet friendly place? I did see a few people with pets so that might a bonus if you need that.

Hotel modera. I do travel allot and it recently clicked that I should be reviewing all of the stays. With hotel modera I feel like I got what I paid for. It’s considered an small boutique hotel. I agree.
To start off, the location of the hotel is in the south side of portland. A few blocks from the portland building, steps from portland state university, blocks from the museum and portland visitor center. I can honestly say I enjoyed the location allot. I’m an explorer and it was extremely easy to get around to all the hot spots without having to ride any of the public transit. (love the trimet transit system though). Another thing I enjoyed about my stay is the constant attention to the clientele. Mostly every time I went out to explore they asked if I needed a taxi, help with the public trans or any reservations. I politely declined but I do enjoy that they out their guests first in many ways. I felt taken care of.
Aside from the location something important to me is the front desk and concierge service. Upon arriving at pdx airport I took a taxi to modera. The ride is about 40 dollars. For a first time travel it was ok but next time I will use the max. As u got out of the car the attendants greeted me and helped me with my bags. I walked in and I was greeted by the front desk. They asked me about my flight, how long I was staying, what my plans where in town and they even recommended some spots for me to check out. They handed me two papers. One with the concierge pics of the city and second a map. Lovely! I like feeling like a tourist but I also like feeling like I’m ring accepted by the town. The front desk did just that. Upon going to my room I sat down and relaxed in bet for 5 minutes. The phone rang and I was asked, by my last name, if the room met my expectations. Every time I interacted with the concierge or front desk attendant they always asked me ‚” is there anything else I can do to help make your stay more enjoyable?“
That’s what I call service.
The service through out my time here in regards to room service and room keeping was also phenomenal. The modera is a green hotel, something I did not notice until I got here. It did not bug me, in fact I was actually happy to know they can provide a luxurious up keep for there guests and still be eco friendly. My room was done every day by the time I got back and they took note to how I organized my stuff and how I liked my coffee. They left all things ready for me to come and relax.
My room was perfect. I walk into a king suite facing the city in the top floor. It was a little awkward at first. The hue window faced the city alright, I faced an office building with people working so it was kind of distracting knowing they could see me aswell. At night after 5 the view from the room was beautiful since no one was in the offices across but the city lights were all lit! The bed was firm and fluffy. Just how I like them. They had a giant fo fur throw that added to the luxury feel! Super soft and warm. The room lamps and décor were extremely modern and practical. All items had hints of chrome which added to the high end look. One thing that left me speechless was the rest room. The design and balance of light was extraordinary. The vanity had light aiming from all directions which provided a good place to get ready. The towels were plentiful and soft. All the soaps and moisturizers were lovely: not to feminine or too masculine. The only thing that took from the rest room was the light switch. It really was a visual turn off. I have an artist background and it was an eye soar knowing the whole room was lavish and this light switch looked from 1990. Nothing to kill my mood over and an easy fix. There is a beautiful bound hook names modera in the night stand that introduces you to all the accommodations provided by the hotel. Gym and other amenities provided for the guests. I did not partake in any other than the restaurant happy hr. For a small boutique hotel they try and provide big hotel amenities. Loved the free wifi!
The restaurant called nel centro was lovely. I had a chance to review it separately so please check it out.
The décor of the hotel was a combination of woodcabin through the eyes of the MoMA in NYC. Practical and woodsy with hints of modern art and chrome details. Lovely! When you look at some pieces they look expensive and museum worth while others look a bit from an ikea catalog. It might have just been the placement. But that is me being picky and comparing it to what I expect from a 5 star hotel.
Over all my week stay at the modera hotel was absolutely beautiful. The guest here is treated well by the staff, by the concierge and by the locals. If you ever visit portland and want to spend a bit more on something more fulfilling, modera is you place .
