Been twice, 2 years in between and can say both times I have a great experience. Dr. Shin is a very nice guy, really personable and does a great job. Front staff is very nice as well.
Somehow there was a mix up with booking through the online system (my confirmation said today, theirs said next week) but without flinching they said «no problem, let’s do it right now. I would have been fine to reschedule, but that worked.
Thirty minutes start to finish for a full eye exam. Other than some disturbing news… bifocals are on the horizon… all went well and I have the prescription on hand that I needed.
Highly recommend.
FYI found the rates to be exactly around how I expected, I pay out of pocket so knew what I was going in for.

My experience at this practice was fine, but do your research on what your insurance will cover before going here because i feel very mislead and was told my exam would be fully covered. I even gave Eye Styles my insurance info 4 days ahead of time and told them i just needed new contacts, and they said «oh that insurance company is great to work with and everything should be covered.» They clearly didn’t call in and receive a pre-​approval, but made it sound like they did. Contact fittings are rarely covered by insurance companies.
I rarely ever write reviews but this is worth writing so you don’t feel mislead when you receive a bill you weren’t expecting. I’ve been getting exams for contact lenses for 15+ years and I’ve never had an exam that wasn’t fully covered from my insurance until now. I agree with Emily M.‘s review below — they charge extra for a contact fitting fee and should ask the patient if they want an extensive exam rather than just doing it.
I am very disappointed and when i called there was no remorse. I’ll pay this $ 100 contact fitting fee and be done with it (which felt no different or extensive than any other exam for contacts I’ve received) and look for a new provider next year.
Bummer that this practice couldn’t have been more upfront with their fees and been honest with their patient.

Really nice practice, but they only carry incredibly expensive frames (starting at $ 300) and I found out later that they charge more than double the going rate for exams and contact lens fittings. I’m new to Portland so I am still learning what things cost. Even with insurance, I paid a significant amount out of pocket just for an exam and prescription renewal. When I called them to discuss their rates related to other shops in the area, like Pearl Vision for example, they said «We don’t practice that kind of optometry. It’s simply not part of our mission. I’m sorry there’s nothing I can do for you.» Well, they could have offered me a partial refund, but they didn’t want to keep my business that badly. This place is great if you want to pay a lot more than necessary.

Watch out for the $ 100 contact lens fitting fee; Dr. shin recommended new contacts, but failed to mention the extra charge for «fitting» them.

I went in for an eye exam and new frames a couple of weeks ago and had a great experience. I was able to schedule an appointment for the next day, the office looks good and the desk ladies were hilarious. Dr. Shin was also very nice and made sure that I understood everything he was telling me about my eye health. The frame selection is also very «hip». Although the experience was very good, I forgot to write a review.
What drove me to give such a great review was my experience from earlier today. Long story short, my 2 year old got poked in the eye with a stick and it looked bad – parents worst nightmare. I called their number to ask if this was something I should bring her in to see Dr. Shin or her normal pediatrician. I had been seen before, but my daughter was a new patient. This all happened at 5:00pm on a Monday. They were able to take my information over the phone and told me to come right in and that they would make sure she was seen.
When we arrived, my heart sank because the office was very busy. However, they were true to their word and were able to see her. My daughter is very shy and does NOT like very many people. Dr. Shin was amazing with her and had her allowing him to exam her eye in no time. He was very reassuring and didn’t make me feel silly for rushing her in when she did not in fact have any damage to her eye.

I’ve had great vision my hole life, but have a few serious medical problems. dealing with doctors is very frustrating for me, it seems they don’t n haven’t wanted to get anywhere. I gave up. until this summer my eye started bleeding from the retina into my blue ring, eyes. I had no clue what to do. I knew the hospital was a waste of time. I took a chance. against my belief that doctors are really a waste of time. I didn’t want to go blind. So I picked eye styles and got a ride. I was blown away, took me off the street, no insurance. Dr Shinn new how serious my problem was. and because of his unselfish professionalism I can still see. Bye far the best doctor experience I have had in a long time. Very educated at what he does. for once it was worth paying for. I just wanted to say thanks, anyone who has eye issues, and my family all wear glasses and I’ve been to a few eye doctors. no one campares to this place. so educated and willing to use it. not ur ordinary lame experience. love you guys.

I haven’t had coverage for eye care in 5 years so I knew I was overdue for an exam. I found Woodstock Eye Styles and got an appointment within a week (which worked perfectly for my new coverage and my schedule). I showed up early, which allowed Dr. Shin to see me early as well. I found him very personable and appreciated how he explained everything to me. I found it very comfortable and thorough.
As I expected, Dr. Shin recommended that I get both new contact lenses and glasses. My insurance only covers one or the other every 12 months so we went with contacts since that’s what I primarily wear. I’m also Native American and can access IHS services. I explained this to Dr. Shin and said that what is best for me is to get my contact lenses through his office and use my insurance, but to then use my IHS coverage to get a new pair of glasses. He quickly agreed and I walked out of the door with my prescription in hand.
Finally, my contacts are still about $ 100 out of pocket and I do have to wait for pay day before I can pay them, but the staff was very friendly and offered to work with me to get the payment taken care of. They went ahead and ordered the lenses allowing me to pay for them when I pick them up.
Everyone was friendly and I really appreciated how easy it was to schedule, get them my insurance information, and take care of my prescription. I’m glad I stumbled upon this clinic.

Great office staff. My eye exam with Dr. Shin was thorough and he explained everything quite well. Great selection of frames too! I found one for my progressive lenses and one for sunglasses.

Just had a horrific experience at Eye Styles with Dr. Shin. Let me fill you in…
So I needed a new contact lenses prescription and thought, «Hey I should just go somewhere close to my neighborhood.» I made an appt. Last Monday i went in to Eye Styles on Woodstock and had an appt with Dr. Shin. I let Dr. Shin know that I am very happy with my contact lenses and feel like my eyes are pretty stable, and have probably changed very little. He did all the normal eye exam stuff, which was fine. He found that my eyes had not really changed. He did tell me that perhaps if he changed it just a bit I might have clearer vision for my computer use. However, my current prescription was fine for computer use. He said he wanted to send me home with a different lens to try… As he looked through the lenses he had on hand, I think he discovered that he didn’t have what he wanted (I only know this because he muttered something under his breath) So he instead gives me a lenses that is basically the same prescription that I am currently wearing… and I still have a pair of contact lenses.
When I go out to pay they charge me $ 200 for the eye exam and then another $ 100 for a contact lenses fitting fee. I am confused so I ask, «Why would I need to pay a contact lenses fitting fee when I will most likely be going with the same prescription that I had?» The people at the desk just looked at me and said, «Well he is sending you home with a lenses and wants you to come back to see how it fits.»
So…today I come back in with the same lenses (actually it was sort of terrible and not as comfortable as my current lenses). I sat down with him and let him know that I have some questions and some frustrations. So, I asked him why he sent me home with a lenses that was the same as what I am wearing and didn’t send me home with the lenses that would change my vision for computer use and make my distance vision slightly less? He said, «Well you said that you were really happy with your current prescription so…» I said, «But you said you wanted me to try a different lenses, one that would make my computer use easier and my distance slightly weaker. Yet that is not what you did.» He said, «Well we don’t send patients home with two lenses for fear that they will mix them up and then we will end up ordering the wrong prescription.» I said, «That still doesn’t make any sense. Why would you not just send me home with what you originally wanted me to try?» Then I said, «My frustration is that you charge me an extra $ 100 for a contact lenses fitting fee when, if we order the same prescription you wouldn’t really do anything in way of fitting me. Then in the end the entire $ 300 of my insurance money is gone to you and I have nothing left to purchase contact lenses. I am just trying to understand that $ 100 charge.» He continued to talk in circles and continued to be very condescending to me, like somehow I wouldn’t possibly understand.
In the end I said, «I think what you need to do at this point is finish this appt, give me my current prescription and let me leave.» He then said, «Well perhaps we will let you keep your $ 100 contact lenses fee and you can go somewhere else because I don’t think I am comfortable writing your prescription.» I said, «Ummm, no, you were paid $ 200 for an exam, and for me to get a contact lenses prescription another eye care facility will want to do that exam. So no. That is not what will happen. You need to do the right thing and just finish this appointment, write me the prescription and let me go on my way.» So he said, «Okay i will do that for you.» Wow… this was about wanting to understand why I was being charged for things, never got my answers and still ended up with my same prescription that I came in with and out $ 300. NEVER go there… never see Dr. Shin! Unless you enjoy a condescending doctor that will squeeze you for all that you have as far as insurance money.

I had a vision exam long before I sought to buy a pair of glasses. For a while, getting glasses was in the back of my mind, so whenever I saw an eyewear shop, I’d wander in. This is how I learned that finding a good shop is difficult. First, I visited a couple of those giant corporate places at the mall. Eww. I just couldn’t stand how impersonal the employees were to me, and to one another. It’s like, being professional does not require robotic, inhuman behavior. Next, while strolling along some trendy neighborhood, I visited a few independent boutiques. I learned that it’s common for such places to «provide» frame choosing services. By provide, I mean require; and charge a bunch of money for. So I forgot about getting glasses for a while.
Finally, the time came when I really needed glasses. I learned about Woodstock Eye Styles, and decided to check them out. I’m really glad I did! They helped me choose between a few favorite frames– that I got to pick myself, and also helped me through the arduous insurance process. They really took care of everything, and made the process enjoyable. They’re personable, care about providing good service, and have positive energy in the office. I would definitely recommend them!
