History

Established in 1993.

Asterix Eyewear has had the same owners for over 14 years, we have taken what was a small eyeglass repair shop («All American Eyeglass Repair» on SE 50th, Powell and Foster) and grown it to a full service optical retail and eyeglass repair shop. We changed our name to Asterix Eyewear in 2006 (* eyewear). Establishing a company that strives to offer the highest quality frames, prescription lenses and able to do even the most complicated in eyeglass repairs.

Continuing to do all the repairs that others say «can’t be done» all with a smile and a standard of quality that has given us the reputation we can be and are proud to have.

They’ve repaired 2 pairs of my old glasses. The frame/​hinge repairs were $ 45 each, which is a competitive price compared to the few that offer repairs rather than replacements. The service was fast enough. They were upfront and honest about what they could/couldn’t fix, pricing, and scheduling. I recommend them highly for repairs. I haven’t shopped for anything new there, so I can’t comment on that side of the business.

They repaired my expensive French frames after my daughter broke them. They’ve re shaped countless glasses for me as they pull out of shape. (I don’t always remove them two handed like I should!) I bought 2 new pair from them and I’m pleased as punch. What a wonderful local business!

I came in to have my eyeglasses repaired. The staff was super friendly and helpful. When I told them what I wanted done, they suggested another approach that ended up saving me money. I was so happy I gave them a tip, which I’ve never done at an optical shop.

I break glasses. That’s what I do. Asterix has repaired 4 broken hinges on 3 separate frames with a fast turn-​around and a great repair job. $ 45 for the hinge repair. $ 50 for the time they had to remove the crazy glue that I’d gooped up on a botched Macguyver job. The customer service has been great. I highly recommend taking your broken glasses to the friendly folks at Asterix.

I received glasses from Kaiser a few months ago. While my last pair of spectacles lasted for years and I still have them, this pair I received from Kaiser quickly began to deteriorate after I acquired them. The lenses were becoming marred and opaque, and were causing me bad headaches and eye strain.
I took them to Asterix and they said the anti-​glare coating was defective and took it off for me. Now they’re great! No more headaches! The shop got them back to me exactly when they said. I was inspired to show them an older, much loved pair with rickety frames and they said they’ll fix them too!
In this throw away culture of ours, any place that fixes things in lieu of replacing them is a welcome change. And with the high cost of spectacles, it really makes good financial sense. Huzzah!

I went in to have my lenses from a broken pair of frames be put into the same pair of frames that were new. The people helped me very quickly, and all they had to do was grind down the lens so they would fit. This cost all of $ 15, and I learned a future repair over the bridge would be $ 45. That is a great price, considering how much glasses can cost. Would highly recommend this place if a quick fix is needed.

One of those few local places where customer service still rules. I stepped on my brand new prescription Wayfarers dismounting a motorcycle and bent the hinge in a near 90. I stopped into Asterix this morning and they fixed them in about 2 minutes with no charge. While waiting I walked around and was blown away by the incredible selection of hip and vintage frames just packed into this tiny place. I’m gonna tell everyone about this place and they’ve earned a life-​long customer.

As I waited for a lens to be replaced in my glasses some months ago, I noticed the variety of frames displayed. My glasses were quickly repaired, I was very courteously served and for the first time in a long time, my lens FINALLY stopped falling out. Now that I need new frames, this is definitely the place that will be getting my business. Learning that some of the proceeds from the sale of frames helps people with vision issues also helped inform my decision to return.

I am extremely happy with my experience at Asterix! Not only do they have a great selection of modern and vintage eyewear, the repairs made to two pairs of my own broken glasses were just incredible. I was surprised they were actually even candidates for repair due to the way I broke them, and the repairs are essentially invisible. HIGHLY recommend.

I went into this store hoping to get a case for my Ray Ban sunglasses. After fiddling around with dozens of keys, trying to open a case, the salesperson said, «sorry». That was it! I will NEVER go here again for anything!!!

I dropped a text book on a pair of glasses and the little lobe that a lens retaining screw threads into spit in half. I’ve known this place always existed as a repair place from driving past it all the time so I took it in. It was fixed the same day in a few hours for $ 45 for one weld/​braze on a basic metal frame. Even if you have a cheap basic metal frame like the one I got fixed, consider the type, conditions of your lenses. Mine were in good conditions and bought on a special so it was worth $ 45 to have it fixed. We’ll see how it holds up.
When you’re choosing between fixing and replacing, don’t just choose and ask for quotes. Check the lead time. The shop I got my sun glasses from had to order the lenses and it took two weeks, and the only other option was a higher profit upgrade lens if I wanted it done in the normal turn around time.

Quick, perfect service. Great price, totally reliable. No one wanted to work on my compression mount glasses locally. I found these guys through a youtube video. Had my glasses back in a week with new temples that now have hinges, I feel like they totally upgraded my glasses.

Asterix had an unusual frame that I had been looking for. I looked around at their comprehensive selection while I was there and everything seemed high quality. They even have some very nice vintage frames. If you are looking for something very particular it’s likely that they will have it.

These guys are great! I broke my favorite plastic frames right in the middle and thought they couldn’t be repaired. They were able to fuse them together and you can’t even tell they were ever broken. Amazing! And — they did it quickly. I mailed them in and they mailed them right back to me. I’m so happy!

This review is only with respect to glasses repair.
I stepped on my glasses and one of the «temples» (that’s the technical term for the long piece that starts at the hing and hooks around your ear) snapped completely off at the hinge. Rather than buy a whole new pair I took it in to see if they could fix it, since I really liked the frame.
The guy took a look, gave me an estimate (I think it was $ 10 – 15), found a replacement that wasn’t an exact match but good enough, and I had him install it. No problems since then.
When a different pair of glasses (with a Flexon metal frame) had a loose bridge they quoted me ~$ 70 – 80 to fix it, saying the welding process for Flexon is a lot more difficult/​expensive than a cheap weld that I could have done at home. I searched Unilocal and found a different place that offered to do it for $ 35 with a 1yr warranty.
So yeah, Although I haven’t found them to always be the cheapest option, thus far they at least seem straightforward and fair. I’d recommend at least calling them for a quote and obviously get any stated warranty for the work in writing.

«I believe there’s a difference between those who shop in malls or costco for bargain eyewear and those who are looking to support local business and wear something a little different. Asterix offers a huge selection of frames both new and vintage, and respectful suggestions about style and the best fit for your prescription. Their prices are totally in line with similar businesses (my optometrist is at Hawthorne Vision Center, and Asterix was less). I’ve been coming here for 7 years and have always had good service and GREAT, quick repairs.

Everyone should note that with one exception, all the reviews are for eyeglass repair.
The one review that says lenses (only, not frames) were purchased claims that the lenses were about $ 80.
I was quoted $ 200 for glass lenses and over $ 400 for plastic. The frames I could see prices on started around $ 200 and went up to over $ 400.
All frames are kept in locked cages, with prices written on tiny stickers on the bottom, unlike any other eyeglass store I’ve ever seen, so it’s very difficult to shop.
Who spends $ 400 on frames? Who are these people spending $ 800 on glasses?
I would be happy to spend a reasonable amount in a local shop to get lenses put in my frames and be sure I’m not supporting a sweatshop somewhere. But when online glasses stores can send you completely new glasses WITH lenses starting at $ 10, you have to wonder about places that want to charge you $ 400 for lenses alone.

I have to laugh at the reviewer who claimed that Asterix were «ripoff artists». I’m a clumsy, absent-​minded person, so I’m constantly bringing these guys badly bent frames. Each time they warn me that bending them back might break them, and then they’d have to charge me $ 40 to weld them back together. But every time they manage to fix them with just patient bending. Total cost? Nada, forget it, it’s «just adjustment».
Adjustment, my eye. Most opticians charge about $ 15 for that kind of thing — if they can do it at all. Mostly they can’t.
