I went in here because my daughter really wanted to go to the Japanese Garden and this seemed like a reasonable location for a a pre-garden, café, pit-stop. The woman behind the counter was really friendly and when I ordered a cappucino for myself and a cocoa for my daughter, she asked if I prefer the expensive cocoa or a more kid-friendly hot chocolate version that they have. I appreciated the suggestion and agreed for the kid-friendly version. The barista was super friendly, even brought us our drinks(may have noticed my hands were pretty full, and the drinks were awesome. I’m pretty fussy about my cappuccino and it was nicely foamy. My daughter’s hot chocolate was REALLYYUMMY! Ah-hem, I, uh, tasted it to make sure it wasn’t too hot. I maaaaaay have taken more than one sip…(so…good). The atmosphere was nice with mellow music that’s cozy and not pounding out on the speakers so it provided enough noise to cover up conversation while allowing folks to hear one another. The tables are nicely spaced out, the bathroom was clean. We found parking right outside, but I don’t know how it would be other times of the day/week(we went on a Thursday morning). Great place and would love to go back. Oh yes, and their wifi is good(some places claim to have wifi and you just end up in a deadspot — the speed was actually excellent). All in all, a great café! Thanks!

My partner and I have been making CHNW a destination to work for several years, and we feel like we’re home when we arrive. Great staff, great atmosphere, great coffee(and chai lattes!). I wish they had a little better food selection – we’d probably stay even longer!

If you’re passing this place up, you’re making a mistake. good coffee, and a fantastic americano. Sometimes i get coffee in my hydroflask in the morning and am still drinking it at 1pm — other coffee places have coffee that doesn’t taste as good through the day, but CHNW’s coffee stays strong all day long. Occasionally, I stop in on the weekend to do some writing, but only if I can leave my apartment early. They are a LITTLE bit spendy, but the quality and service is SO worth it. For actually GOOD coffee, I’ll go here over anywhere else in town.

simple menu but everything is so well done. the baristas are very friendly! which you’d never expect since at first glance it does look like a typical portland-hipster coffee shop. the exposed brick, original art and super-well-balanced-not-annoying-at-all music playlist(i always forget headphones) really won me over. great location on east burnside, convenient if you’re on foot but finding parking in the area may be a headache if you’re driving. it gets quieter late afternoons so table space isnt as tight.

Chanced upon this spot while walking on Burnside. Found me by surprise. The hot chocolate they make is among the best Ive had. The cappuccino is a close second. The people that made the coffee took the attempt to describe what they are making.

Incredible staff, great atmosphere with great coffee. Need I say anything more? Get the vanilla latte and you will not be disappointed. I come here every morning to start my day off to relax and catch up on the news. The music they play isn’t too loud, but it’s wonderful to be around. Overall, a great Portland coffee shop that you must check out when in the area

Portland is changing, we all feel it, but you know what stays steadfast and incredible? CHNW. they always hire great people, and remain the best cappuccino I’ve had in Portland.(Of course there are many great cappuccinos, I just happen to like theirs the most.) I’ve been a loyal patron for over 6 years and they never disappoint. They strike a great balance of treating people how they’d like to be treated, maintaining amazing quality without being pretentious. And have always been great to their community. Simply put. If you haven’t been to CHNW, you’re missing out on one of Portland’s gems.

I had been meaning to check this place out and it did not disappoint. The staff is chill and gave me a good recommendation on the cappuccino after I mentioned it was my first time and I was curious what was popular here. Coming in on the weekend around 11am the place was not that full, though it did seem to have quite a cycle of people coming in and out. Good vibe, nice setting, I’ll be back.

I’ve just not been as impressed with them lately, and always feel like I wasted money on a latte. Drip coffee it is for me, unless it’s fall and in that case they have a bomb hot caramel Apple Cider.

Small cozy spot to relax and enjoy a cup of coffee. Friendly staff and delicious baked goods. I had a black americano and a caramelized onion scone. Both were very pleasant. The local art on the walls is beautiful. Table space is limited so it’s best for a short stop.

My wife and I went here to get some work done on a nice Saturday. It’s a very quaint little shop and the staff as well as the coffee is great. With that being said your probably wondering then y only 3 stars. For one the parking is a hot mess but I understand that it’s not entirely there fault. Also after my first refill being charged 1.35 per cup for a refill of coffee is a little strap for my likings. My wife ordered the chai and she said it was the best chai in the city which would have given this review another half star if able. When we go back j will branch out from the black coffee but that is also what I love.

Seating is limited here but it’s extremely pleasant if you snag a spot. The coffee leaves are beautiful and done masterfully. I got a latte. The coffee had a deep and earthy flavor that was cut by the smooth milk. The coffee was a great start to a great day. I also ordered a poppy seed almond muffin. The display of the food isn’t great. I couldn’t really tell what was in the container and blindly asked for a muffin not knowing he flavor. It wasn’t something I’d typically order but was good and filling. It was a little dense, but the caramelized almonds on the top of the muffins provided a perfect crunch. Overall I had a great experience here. The atmosphere is peaceful and welcoming.

This place is top-notch all around. One of my favorite coffee places in NW, along with its equally-awesome sister Sterling on 21st. Fantastic coffee, simple no-fuss menu(double mocha mint coconut milk frapps, be gone!), absolutely amazing service, lovely décor and ambiance(ever-changing local art displays, nice music), fair pricing, well-kept bathroom, free WiFi… I could go on and on. Whenever I find myself walking down Burnside in the morning and need a pick-me-up, this is always where I stop. It’s little details, like how they serve espresso with a tiny glass of fizzy water or frequently have fresh flowers on the tables, that make this place exceptional.

vanilla latte — the other reviews aren’t kidding that this vanilla latte is out of this world. both the vanilla and espresso come through strong yet balanced, just a tad on the sweet side great service too!

Store out front was a little low key. You can easily pass by it if you don’t pay attention. I liked the store. Small, simple and clean. Very homey and cozy. Menu is minimal and straight forward. The vanilla iced latte was excellent: earthy, medium body, and hit the right coffee notes with a pleasant aroma. The barista was really nice and friendly. I came with my girlfriend who likes coffees but quite sensitive to it, so she likes taking only a few sips from mine. Later on the barista brought us another vanilla latte and asked if we want it since she«made it by mistake». That was really nice of her. I’d like to think that she must have noticed how my girlfriend was drinking almost all of my coffee(hard to blame her since it was really good), so she came to my rescue. And I, of course, took her on her generosity. The day we left Portland to continue our trip up north to Seattle, we stopped by for another coffee and a different barista chatted us up about our trip. She was very friendly and genuine. Northwest will be my definite go-to when we’re in Portland.

Unexpectedly big. Expectedly awesome. Walking in you immediately notice that the café is narrow, but goes back a bit. They line it with tables and design it in a way that isn’t cluttered(and just works). I enjoy sitting, sipping, and people watching on Burnside(and trust, there is a lot to watch). I also had a wonderful espresso that made me wonder why I hadn’t come here sooner. Also, it was relaxed and not packed – always a good thing Portland.

Quaint, dark nook on a corner in NW Portland. Convenient, Hot, fresh, delicious. Nonfat latte sitting before me, Kitschy art hanging from the walls, childish coloring pages, Only open seat? Sun glaring directly into my eyes, Squinting, pain, seeing spots, Chug coffee so I can get the hell out of satan’s magnifying glass, searing holes in my retinas.

Another great place to do some work! I love the brick walls and all the pieces of art. There are about 6 small tables that fit 2 people(a little too small for more than just a laptop or a book) and one big round community table right in front of the coffee counter. The coffee is decent, but I’ve had better lattes :) I really like this place because there are OUTLETSEVERYWHERE! Well, a good amount! They also play light music in the background, which I really enjoyed because it wasn’t too overbearing. It’s the perfect place to get some work done. I would definitely come back again!

I had one of the best vanilla lattes I’ve ever had from Coffeehouse NW. It was just the right amount of sweet. I will definitely be back. They also have some outdoor seating which is great for sunny days.
