If I could tell you, that YOU could save $ 15,000 dollars by not coming here, would that sway your decision? To save you from reading the long, drawn out version of my story, the short version is I took my car in for a routine oil change, and after many return visits over the course of a week, $ 900 dollars in repairs later, the final diagnosis was that my 2011 BMW needed a new engine. Of course, this was devastating, but something did not set right with this.
I decided to take my car for a second opinion, and it was quickly discovered that not only did the engine NOT need to be replaced (they couldn’t fathom how this conclusion was even met), BUT my car’s repair was completely covered by a recall, leaving me to not cover 1 penny of the expense. The diagnosis was quickly discovered with the connection of a computer, and the diagnostic code appearing. How this was not caught by a BMW specific work shop is beyond me.

This guys did a great job on my BMW X5. I needed brake and other coolant work done, and they gave me an estimate, stuck to that price, did the work in a timely manner, and were very friendly. Their prices are better than going to dealership, and they’re right down the street from me, which was great. I will definitely go back. Thank you for great work!

My BMW 3-​series received a concerning check control light during a business trip driving from Seattle to Portland 2 days ago.
When arrived in Portland, the concierge (a Portland native) at the Hotel Monaco where I was staying recommended Boyd’s.
I called and talked to Gary the owner — a very kindhearted guy who really cares about his clients and his passion for Bimmers is extremely apparent. despite being extremely busy (so busy he warned me they probably couldn’t get to it until next week) he told me to bring it over so he could scan the codes to determine requires service and ensure would be safe for me to drive home. And he only charged ½ hour $ 45 for the scan, which you NEVER see). Despite being 4 – 5 days out, he squeezed me in and work was completed the following morning so I was able to return to Seattle that afternoon.
these guys are extremely efficient, inexpensive, and completely trustworthy. I drive to Portland once a month, and it’s comforting to know there’s a place in Portland similar to my BMW specialist in Seattle. Top Shelf.

Boyd has been the best experience I’ve ever had regarding car maintenance. We needed routine maintenance, oil change, and a couple of deferred repairs that we had put off. First, Boyd timely scheduled our maintenance, and finished quickly. Everything was completed within 24 hours. They had to wait for us because they finished faster than we could get back to pick it up. Second, the final price and the quoted price were exactly the same and it was noticeably lower than other places, especially the dealer. This is because they charge a reasonable per hour rate and not the excessive rates (we lived in DC) that the BMW dealerships have typically charged. Third, everything was done competently. Too often our experience with the dealerships was that something would go wrong shortly after and we’d have to bring it back. Not here. Everything was done right the first time (it’s been awhile since our visit) and no costly repeat visits. Finally, they top it off with courteous professionalism. They were friendly, polite, and even mailed a thank you card. I couldn’t ask for more!

After your BMW’s warranty expires — if you want to save money — it is imperative that you find a reliable (non BMW) repair shop. These guys were excellent. Very knowledgeable and very fairly priced. Was very happy with their work and customer service. Have to thank Unilocal for finding them.

I first went to Boyd’s when I was looking to buy a BMW X3 and they preformed a pre-​purchase inspection. I had called them and they were able to fit me into their schedule at the last minute. They were very timely and professional. I have since used them for a pre-​purchase on my second BMW and have also had them do multiple services on them.
I truly feel that word of mouth is the best recommendation a business can get so I plan on telling everyone about this great company!

Gary and Eric are fantastic guys. They know BMW’s inside and out– I wouldn’t trust my 540 to anyone else but these guys. I have taken my BMW to other dealerships and repair shops in the Portland area in past and realize the guys at Boyd are absolute straight shooters. They not only know what’s going on with your car, but recommend the most cost effective solution to repair your beloved BMW the best way possible.
In short– they treat your vehicle like it was their own…

When my 325 developed an issue with its suspension that could have been very expensive to repair, I chose Boyd after hearing from my former mechanic and a fellow car enthusiast that the owners are among the most reputable bimmer mechanics in Portland.
I was able to schedule a repair for two days out. Eric was polite on the phone and straightforward about what he thought the issue was. I dropped my car off and he gave me a ride to work which was convenient and very courteous.
Within three hours Eric called me back to check before performing the work, which I specifically requested. He identified and repaired the issue for a third of what I’d expected to pay. I was thrilled. He also threw in a brief inspection to let me know what other issues I might expect.
I couldn’t pick my car up immediately, but Boyd has a key drop system that allowed me to pay for the repair and get my keys back the same evening. Very convenient.
I look for price, competence, and convenience in a garage. These guys won my return business by excelling at each.

After having delt with dealerships for years, Boyd Motor Werks is clearly all about minimalism. Their shop isn’t fancy. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Everything looks dated, paint is fading on the building exterior, and there are no fancy waiting areas. I wasn’t offered a diet coke or biscotti when I came in, nor do they provide a giant big screen TV to watch while you wait.
I had my car towed here after it refused to start after multiple attempts. After providing my information and a brief description of the problem and my suspected diagnosis (fuel pump went out), I handed over the keys and took the bus to my next destination. No rental cars are offered here.
Roughly 4 – 5 hours later, I received a call from the service manager that proved my amateur diagnosis was in fact correct. They stated the specific parts that needed to be replaced, labor hours involved, and the total cost, and when my car would be ready. Roughly 2 hours later, my car was fixed and I was on my way… only after riding the bus to get back to the shop.
Today, I called the dealership and got a quote for the same exact repair. The dealership quoted me appoximately $ 200 more for the same (relatively minor) repair. You know what that $ 200 pays for? Diet Cokes. Biscotti. Big Screen TVs. A BMW loaner car.
If you need all that pampering, by all means, stick with the dealership. As for me, though, I don’t need all that. I’d much rather keep as much of my hard earned money as possible.

Gary, Eric and the team at Boyd’s do great work. Highest marks for clarity, great work done right and deep knowledge of the ultimate driving machine. Just had another great experience with them this week and felt it was time to write a review. Buy a good BMW, take it to Boyd’s for care and service… it’ll last you a long time.

I felt compelled to review this shop after my recent experience and past experiences. I have read a few of the other reviews and of course I am sorry for the frustrations felt but to say that someone provides poor customer service because he isn’t a bubbly person really isn’t fair. I personally found Eric to be perfectly friendly, clear in his explanations and direct, which I appreciate.
I found these guys when I was searching for someone to inspect an M3 I was looking at buying, the price these guys charged for a full inspection is really reasonable so I decided to give them a try, (ignoring the reasons people gave them low ratings) and I am really glad I did. I had driven this potential car and everytime I shifted into third it would grind like crazy, all other gears were fine. You essentially had to double clutch to get it in at all. The owner of the car basically said I didn’t know how to drive a stick, which of course is crap, been on them my entire life. We made the deal on the car provided a clean inspection. The car was taken to Boyds and within 10 minutes Eric was calling me to say that the transmission was totally shot and that the car wasn’t worth it and recommended we not do the inspection since to rebuild is costly and not the best decision. I said thank you and asked him to send me an invoice so I can call back and make a payment, he said he wasn’t going to charge me for driving it around the block. I really appreciated it and decided that they would be my shop.
After my third attempt on getting an M3 that wasn’t beat to a pulp I finally found a really clean one with low miles. Yesterday I took it in for the inspection 2 and to have the tranny fluid swapped for Royal Purple. I have to say that the experience was exceptional. They had no issue with my bringing in my own fluids, the service itself was half the price of the dealer and Eric went through everything with me. They didn’t try to upsell me on anything, even though they did recommend changing the brake fluid and power steering fluid eventually. They could have told me I needed it then and there but they didn’t.
I didn’t find any of them in the shop to be rude or inpatient, they are direct and courteous. I highly recommend this shop for BMW owners, and I will be a life long customer.

Every time I go in I receive great customer service and great repairs. I like everyone I’ve met here and they’re always willing to work with me if I need to drop my car off early or pick it up the next day or what have you. My favorite visit was coming by to pick up my car and ending up sitting around chatting with Gary and Eric. I’ve never experienced such friendly people at an auto shop.

My issue with Boyd Motor Works is their complete lack of customer service. Today I was shocked and dismayed by Eric’s attitude and vitriol. I adhere to the philosophy that the CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT but apparently at Boyd this old adage doesn’t hold true. I called in for service on my front brakes, a brake fluid bleed and an easy sensor reset and was quoted over $ 800 with over $ 500 coming from PARTS. So I did a little research and found I could order the same Zimmermann OEM rotors for LESS THAN HALF what Boyd wanted to charge me (not to mention his insane markup on brake pads but I won’t even get into that). LESS THAN HALF is major price gouging and is truly upsetting. So I called Eric back and asked him if I could bring in my own rotors. He got very upset and told me that if I brought in my own parts he would up his hourly rate to $ 125 justifying this by saying «I don’t call you up and ask you to work for free do I». Remind yourself he is talking to a CUSTOMER! The last time I checked $ 90 an hour for labor is not WORKING FOR FREE. He then went into a long diatribe about his 90 per hour lift that would be sitting idle if my parts were not the correct parts and if I brought in the wrong parts he would also charge me 90 per hour for my car sitting on the lift while he waited for the correct parts to arrive (somehow forgetting the fact that should my parts be the wrong ones he has his overpriced identical rotors in stock). In the end I have decided I would rather pay more for better service some where else then ever deal with these cheats again. If you want to stay in business (something Eric kept repeating to me in our phone call) then perhaps you should TREAT YOUR CUSTOMERS WITH THE RESPECT THEY DESERVE and don’t gouge people with your parts when you know darn well you can order them online for a fraction of what you are charging people. I expect the dealership to rape me on parts, I never expected it from Boyd Motor Works. My advice: GO SOME WHERE ELSE!!!

Went there because my brake light was on. They said, the rear ones needed to be replaced, and the front was fine, and it would cost $ 1500, so I got a second opinion at Rasmussen, who said the front was shot, and the back was fine. So I chose the dealership. Everything felt very shifty.

Boyd has serviced my car now for about three years and not only have they treated my car very well, but they also are a great couple of guys to hang out with. Gary and Eric both take time to explain the «why’s» and the «how’s» in addition to the «how much» of what it’s going to take to service my car. Gary sometimes even goes farther, explaining exactly the difference between the service I get with them, vs the service I’d get somewhere else, like the dealer. Their willingness to explain in great detail what’s being done to my car and why it costs what it costs does the one thing that keeps me coming back: it allows me to trust them.
A long past review described how sometimes these guys aren’t the best in calling you back. I’ve had that experience too. However, my philosophy is, I’m in the driver’s seat here. It’s my car, so I don’t mind calling to followup on what’s going on with my car. For the most part though, they’ve called me to let me know if something is not going as scheduled or if there’s gong to be a delay. In all, I think if you’re looking for a place to service you fine auto…(so long as it’s a BMW), this is the place.

I’ve got to give Boyd’s top marks. I’ve had my BMW in this shop for extensive repairs (replace transmission, install performance parts, etc.). I’m a car guy and I know my stuff, and I usually do all my own work unless it’s something too big or I don’t have the equipment. When the job is too big for me, then I seek out the best shop, and Boyd’s is one of the best when it comes to care of your German vehicle.
Now, I’m firm believer that it’s a partnership between a shop and the owner when getting work done on a vehicle. Car’s are complicated and finicky, and some issues are super hard to diagnose. Both the vehicle owner and shop have to work together to inform each other to get the issues addressed correctly (for often the shop is seeing the vehicle ‘cold’, meaning it’s the first time they touched the specific vehicle and there’s always a learning curve about each individual car; the owner needs to give as much background, history, and insight to the problem as possible). What I like the most about Boyd’s is they work directly with you… they listen to your input, they work to explain what they’ve found & repaired, and the end result for me has always been stellar. They do know their stuff, and they do excellent work, which is why they always have a lineup of cars waiting out front. Keep up the good work, guys!

No doubt these guys know BMWs. They’re the oldest BMW shop in town and have two guys who have been BMW technicians since the early 80’s. Every time I ride by there, I see bunches of cars old and new being serviced.
To be a great auto repair shop though, you’ve got to have really good customer service, and Boyd just isn’t there. For instance, I bought a really old, vintage BMW and took it in to Boyd for a check up. I told them I knew nothing about cars and asked them some questions and was really made to feel dumb and like I maybe shouldn’t have bought the car if I knew so little. Upon inspection, they found my car needed a part and said it «might take a week to find one.» A week and a half later I still hadn’t heard from them and I had to call and check up. They said they’d located the part and would have it in the following Tuesday. Once again, no phone call and on Wednesday when I called them, they said the part hadn’t made it yet and they’d just gotten a tracking number and it would arrive on Friday. Anyway, you get the point.
I’m a believer in under-​promising and over-​delivering. In communicating clearly. And the concept of no question is a dumb question. If you believe any of that as well, Boyd might not be the best shop in town for you either. When you’re paying $ 90 an hour for someone to fix your car… it should be a pleasant experience all around.
