Great local shop, friendly and considerate. Has decent used parts section, all around works great for local needs. It feels so good to have a place I can run just around the corner for tubes and other little things without having to haul closer in SE to somewhere they’re just going to fling a bunch of attitude. Really like the owner, and have had many good experiences there. Very quick on small repairs and maintenance as well. Would recommend!

Always kind and helpful, not elitist. I have been going here since 2013 sporadicly, as well as other Portland bike shops from time to time, and I have found Backpedal to have the most realistic mindset when bike commuting is the objective. If you need a cromed out, flashy theif bait of a bike, try the Bike Gallery, but if your looking for a tight whip to splash around the city on, look no further.

Taken my bike in for tune-​ups since we moved here 2 years ago. Reasonably priced, helpful in finding what I need (and steering me away from what I don’t) and any issues I had they were quick to take care of. I plan on taking my bike back there for the foreseeable future.

My first experience was exceptional, Second time I waited for 15 minutes and he did not open the shop on time, so I left empty-​handed.
Third time:
Owner got confused with numbers, I got overcharged. He under-​charges or overcharges unintentionally on numerous occasions. Feel free to speak up, it’s better than you leaving unhappy. I only spoke up when he undercharged me.

Purchased my inner tubes at a good price, thank you. Good service except we both forgot to confirm which valve I needed, which resulted in me going to buy a bike pump, because my compressor fitting was incompatible and the adapter did not work.

I think better communication, and a good cheery, loving attitude, would go a long way towards covering the very few shortcomings.
I believe he’s in it for the love of bikes, and working with his hands, not the money which is a great start.

Good guys here! Dave is a nice and down to earth person. Not all pushy and tells you like it is. Like mentioned before this is a no-​nonsense shop. A great local bike shop. Not full for $ 1000-​$ 2000 bikes. Maybe not good for the top end racer but, good for people that like to just «ride» bikes.
Good selection of used bikes and parts also is always a big plus for me also.

Seriously, my bike was filthy when I got it back. There was noticeable wear and tear. Also the parts they installed didn’t work.
I don’t tend to leave bad reviews but this place earned it.
They did give me my money back but it was not worth the experience.

I cannot say enough good things about the guys at Backpedal. I just moved to Portland and getting a reliable bike was at the top of my priorities. After browsing Craigslist for a few days and coming away with nothing of interest, I finally stumbled across one of their ads. The next morning, I visited their shop and was happy to see the bike was exactly as described. Before taking it for a test ride, the man helping me adjusted the seat down to what ended up being the perfect height for me. It’s clearly evident that these guys have a ton of experience and I’m super happy to have made my purchase with them.
What really won me over is when we were talking about a lock. I let it slip that I didn’t have one yet, and I got some solid advice about what to get and the reasoning behind the recommendation. I left to do some research on my own and ended up coming back a few hours later to buy the exact lock he had recommended. Awesome, reasonably priced, friendly, knowledgeable, no pressure shop — what more can you ask for?!

Can’t say enough good things about these folks – they are pleasant, attentive, affordable, and efficient. Very glad that my neighbors steered me away from the Woodstock Bike Gallery (where I had been clobbered by ludicrous costs for work & service that was, at best, very average) and over to BackPedal; I sure as hell won’t be frequenting the competition any longer.

A few weeks ago I was determined to buy a bike that I could love and really ride all spring and summer and saw on their website a used motobecane very reasonably priced and just my size. I walked over, took a test drive and loved it except I was hoping for more upright handlebars. The owner was very accommodating, I brought in some handlebars, he ordered different gear shifters and changed it all over for no cost!!! and he was really really nice! I’m so in love with my new bike and I love that this is my neighborhood bike shop.

I made a trip over to this shop a few days ago in response to a Craigslist ad the proprietor had placed for a cargo trailer. The price was good and the item was on the wall on a hook just as described.
This is a very no-​nonsense kind of shop. They do repairs here, and they have a selection of trusty old mounts. When I was there they had a nice selection of the work-​a-​day sorts of 10-​speeds and upright three speeds, and decent but no flashy mountain bikes that are really some of the best neighborhood bikes. Prices were reasonable for tuned up used bikes, and I will be recommending this place to friends looking for no-​nonsense bicycles in the future. Not everyone wants a carbon fiber racer to go down the street to the grocery store, and this place gets that.
There is a nice selection of parts and practical bike accessories, too. If you are a hard-​core racer, this may not be your shop, but if you view bikes as intelligent and practical transportation, this may be a good place for you to visit.

Went in today after seeing a craigslist ad for a Raleigh Sprite. Dave was friendly and didn’t try any sales tactics on me and made sure it was right for me. Was able to test drive before buying. Great prices. This is truly a great neighborhood shop. Dave is knowledgable and helpful. Would recommend, and return for repairs, etc.

found this shop from an ad on craigslist for a 70s mixte peugeot. it was a 30 minute drive and SO WORTH IT. for as low as the price was i was amazed to see how clean it was and how well it ran.
the parts were almost all original with no rust or pitting. the headset had no indexing and the bottom bracket (with original cottered cranks!) was like butter. the cables and housing were all done beautifully and with great attention to detail. the employee was kind, helpful, and answered my questions without a trace of that typical bike shop snark.
great shop, would go right back if i needed anything else.

Backpedal just overhauled my Bridgestone. It was affordable and honest work. David did a great job and the bike is running really well. I am writing this review because I wanted to find a way to thank them for the time they took to do a good job.
I hate getting the up-​sell, but this David didn’t push anything on me that I didn’t need. It is really refreshing to find an honest shop.
Backpedal is way out of my neighborhood, but well worth the trip.

Took my bike in for a tune-​up and some repairs, and they were super-​straightforward and honest with what could be fixed/​tweaked rather than replaced. Not to mention great work, reasonable prices, friendly service — I’d be hard-​pressed to justify anything less than 5 stars.

Great little bike shop with very knowledgeable repairmen. Their prices are fair, and they seem quite honest. Since the only thing I know about bikes is how to ride one (kinda) I have to trust a professional. They won’t try to sell you something you don’t need. That’s important.
They also have some nice bikes for sale, if you’re tired of fixing the old one. It’s a newer shop, and they are really eager to please. Give them a chance and I know you’ll be glad you did.

I am a cheapskate and tinkerer, and do most repairs on my nearly 40-​year-​old road bike myself, but when I need parts or run into something beyond my ability, these guys are great. They know what they are doing, they get down to business and get the work done, and are never too busy to take a look at the old clunker for me. What more could you ask?

UPDATE: They now carry a wider selection of new bikes. I love my 4-​year-​old Jamis, and I was glad to see they’re carrying that line at the store now. And, as always, Rick continues to do a superb job on bike repairs!
Living in the wilds of outer SE Portland, but working downtown, it seems like I’ve visited every bike shop in between. Rick’s work and attention to customers is the best I’ve seen. He’s always been willing to order a part for me, give advice to customers looking to buy unusual or old bikes (which he used to refurbish full-​time) and even help out a neighborhood kid with a flat tire without charging him a dime.
He does good work at a very fair price. I’m so glad our neighborhood finally has a bike shop of our own!

I have had a lot of really terrible bike experiences in Portland. People that seem to know a lot, and act like real dicks about it – and then when you’re riding your bike two days later, the gears stop working, or your breaks go out while approaching a busy intersection (true stories – thanks a lot Meticon!)
Then I discovered this little gem. The guy is super, super knowledgeable, not a douche, and replaced a whole bunch of things for free. He also recommended I get some extra work down when I had the cash, but he didn’t pull any scare tactics on me like most places.
I got a lot of work done for an insanely good deal and months later I haven’t had any problems. It seems like it is in the most remote part of the world, but you’ll save a whole bunch of money and time by getting your bike fixed right the first time. So yeah, in short, go see this super nice dude.

If you must stop by this great local bike shop. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. They have a nice collection of bikes and some really cool old bikes that are a must see.
I just got a tune up and delivery was fast and very reasonably priced. My bike runs better than it did new. Thanks!
