History

Established in 1987.

Ken and Mary Blanchard opened Ken’s Key and Lock Service in a one hundred square foot building on Highway 99W in Portland, OR. Ken had spent the last 10 years working as a locksmith in Portland and was ready to branch out on his own. Mary owned a resale bookstore and was ready for a bigger challenge. Together they opened the doors on Independence day, 1987.

In July 2007, A-​Max moved to an expanded showroom at the intersection of 30th and Barbur Blvd. This new showroom offers an expanded offering of lock and safes including one of the largest selection of security products in Portland.

A-​MAX Security Solutions staff of 7 Oregon Certified locksmiths includes 2 nationally accredited locksmiths with a designation from ALOA. Ken Blanchard, CRL has earned a Certified Registered Locksmith designation. Bill Blanchard, CML, CPS, CMS, CAL, has earned both the Certified Master Locksmith designation and is one of the only Certified Automotive Locksmiths in the world.

Bought a car from dealership, and have got just one smart key. So, were looking for multiple options for making a duplicate key, where Toyota dealer as asking for $ 242 for the key + programming. Hence, ordered the keys from amazon, and called about a bunch of locksmiths around my place and every one was charge about $ 100 for making a single key. Luckily i called up A-​max, and the price was unbelievable [$ 45 for programming and $ 4 for the cutting], and most interesting part is that, key programming remain same regardless of the number of keys we make. Programming and cutting was done in just 15 mins, and the new keys are working just like the original one. Highly recommended.

What a great place to get your locksmith needs taken care of. Friendly staff, prompt service. I needed a Lincoln Key cut and two remotes programmed and A-​MAX was the best price in town by QUITE A BIT. I was in and out in less than 20 minutes. Bill and Bob were great and I ran into a old friend I hadn’t seen in years — Lloyd. I am recommending A-​MAX to all my Lincoln friends and anyone else needing a quality locksmith.

Very helpful with free advice. I’ve gotten several new cylinders here and they re-​keyed them with matching keys. The parking lot is über small, but the retail space is clean and well done. Also, learned something new while waiting: they carry aftermarket housings for your busted up car key fob. That will save me a $ 100 next time I need one of those!

Worst experience ever. Took them over 3 hours to get into my car and make a key. Their truck broke down so they had to call triple A in hopes that my key could be made but didn’t work so they send some else from the shop. This all would have been fine if the guy wasn’t so rude and told me what was going one through this process. He just kept walking off on his phone. And then told me waiting an hour wasn’t THAT bad. He’s right, an hour wouldn’t have but 3 is ridiculous especially with someone being a jerk. But the end I was admittedly short with them but nothing that warranted this guys attitude from the get go. Additionally they didn’t seem very knowledgeable about my car. Dude couldn’t get in through the doors so he had to pop the trunk (which took forever). And then he didn’t know the trunk and doors didn’t have the code for the key which the triple A guys had to tell him. The second guy who came out was nicer but they were only able to give me 10% off and already super high bill for the whole fiasco.

Called in to see about getting a tubular key made for a gun safe that I got from my grandfather since the keys were nowhere to be found. At first they told me a key could be made if I could find the maufacturer, unfortunately the thing was bolted to the wall from the inside so moving it to find the manufacturer wasn’t an option. He had me send a picture and after I did sent me a quote of about $ 220 to come out to Lyons from Portland and pick it and make a key. Honestly that’s a pretty good price so I called around and got similar quotes. After doing some more digging online I came up with a manufacturer and called them back. He then told me that his safe guy said the code printed on the lock wouldn’t matter and that the $ 220 offer was what I could get. I went online and found a site that carried keys to that safe brand and ordered one using the code. 2 days later I’m into the safe not for $ 220 but for $ 15. Not sure if it was a knowledge issue or a shady one but I won’t recommend them to anyone else.

This business is an average locksmith that charges a lot of money for basic service. The first level of «customer service» they offer is a 65 dollar «we don’t care if you are 4 blocks away» charge, to simply drive over to your house. That’s during normal business hours. Imagine if your local pizza delivery charged that? Once here they supplied and keyed a lock that once installed had a loose turning mechanism. The customer «friendly» dynamo they have manning the front desk told me to bring it in. I thought, you sold me this thing, I’d like you to stand behind the product you sold me. Apparently their appreciation for your business makes that impossible for two weeks. If you want expensive, disinterested service. Then by all means help yourself.

Volkswagen wanted over $ 300 for a new key for our 2001 GTI, so we called all over portland looking for a cheaper solution. We got a blank off eBay and Bill Blanchard at A-​Max was a lifesaver being able to cut and program the new key. Only took 15 minutes and everywhere else we called either couldn’t do it or wanted to charge twice as much. Great service at a fair price, highly recommend.

I have used AMAX and Bill for a few years now. Bill and his crew do a great job, show up, on time and are always helpful. They have done anything from opening a locked car door to reprogramming ECMs and keys. They really do it all, but one interaction with them put them at the top.
It was a cold clear winter morning. We may have had hopes to reaching 60 degrees if it were not for that darn wind. It was a winter day that leaves you in hopes for summer, but we know that rain will come back. Bill was here to reprogram an ECM for me, but lo and behold the car was taken on a drive, making Bill wait 30 minutes for the car to return. I don’t know about all you Unilocal heads out there, but I like to be paid for my time, but Bill understood mistakes happened. It ended up that in that 30 minutes, we laughed, we cried, but more importantly he did not make us feel bad or charge us for his wasted time. Thanks Bill. You guys are the best!

I was desperate to get my locks changed as my house key was unfortunately put into some dishonest hands. They met me promptly, professionally, and very reasonably priced! Wow! Losing a remote key to a VW Beetle is complicated. Dick Hannah VW in Portland was not much help or knowledgeable unless I wanted to use their mechanics to ONLY program new key to car.
Got referred to A-​Max Security from about the 3rd locksmith I contacted and what a great referral. It got handled that day, no appointment, done in around 15 – 20; including cutting my key FOb I bought on line (even though it turns out they have them there) and reprogramming the rest of my keys. Got my education in how the remote works and the computer chip inside the fob and spare key that talks to the antenna ring around the ignition area. Big plus their charge was $ 81.95 total, dealership wanted $ 140 just to reprogram.
Definitely would use and refer them many times over.

Not enough good things to say about a max security. I spoke with Bill and he is very knowledgeable about cars keys and all other types of security. I had no concerns about him working on my car keys. I called around to roughly 10 different locations and all of them wanted me to buy a key in order to cut it or program it. I already owned a blank key for my car and they were able to cut it for $ 36.00. All of the other locations wanted between $ 100-​$ 160. The dealership wanted $ 350 for a key and immobilizer chip programming. A-​Max would have done it for $ 45 however Audi has disabled the ability for outside companies to program the immobilizer chips.
All in all I am quite pleased with their speed and quality of work and would recommend them to anyone.

This is my second review since all I had done last trip was a proper key made after the job was botched at Bi Mart, I have come to the conclusion that there are a lot of jobs anyone can do… if you don’t mind if it’s done wrong. And making a key that doesn’t work is not a good deal even if it is 30% less.
So this time I went in to have spare keys made for my other car AND to replace the remote control key fob. They have a huge selection in stock and can order many others. But in this case, Bill spent a lot of time trying to fix mine (I guess kind of an odd one which was not in stock).
Long story short, he tried to save me money by repairing instead of replacing, but the internal circuit board was fried and unrepairable.
But again I gotta give them 5 stars for the effort. Now all I have to do is remember where I leave the spares.

Moved into a new house and called these guys to schedule a time to have the locks replaced. They had me e-​mail them pictures of the locks to expedite the quoting process. Never heard back over the phone or through the e-​mail. Ended up calling another company today and they were able to set up a time for tomorrow. Maybe the guy was new. Maybe they didn’t like the looks of my locks. Who knows but a callback would have been nice.

I went in to have a basic duplicate of my Honda key made. They noticed that my current key (which was a duplicate made by the dealer) was not cut exactly right, and took the time to «measure» my locks to ensure that their duplicate was a perfect fit. This took a little bit longer (about 15 minutes), but I know I left with a superior key, and they didn’t charge me any extra for their extra time. While I was waiting, I also saw them help 3 other customers with efficiency, expertise… and plenty of laughter, too.

Safe wouldn’t lock after it was closed. Called A-​Max. Bill came out first thing the next day, His service was friendly and efficient. He fixed our safe w/​o hassle. Gave us instructions on how to keep it working correctly. Since it was so quick and easy for him he only charged us the trip fee and Nothing for labor. Then as he was going out our door he felt the looseness of our lock and door knob. He came back in. Placed all his tools down. Whipped out a trusty screw driver and tightened everything up for us.
