Great service. Great food. Celebrated my husbands birthday. He had soft shell crab. I had risotto. Bursts of flavor. We shared arugula salad and gnocchi. Topped it off with 2(yes we’re gluttons) deserts. We couldn’t decide so we split. Cheesecake and bread pudding. If I had to rate. Beard pudding wins. But both awesome. Visit. Enjoy. So worth this treasure restaurant.

On my third visit to Tarry Lodge the food was as superb as my first visit but this time the roar in the dining room was deafening. We were seated upstairs where there were numerous large parties and they were so loud. I could hardly hear my husband talk to me across the table. But that didn’t ruin our dinner because the food was so delicious. We started with the pistachio pizza that was amazing and we shared the crab in piccolo pepper. So delicious. For dinner I had the sweet pea ravioli in a lemon butter sauce and my husband had the hanger steak. Though we were full we had to try the cheesecake with cinnamon gelato. Wow. I would have awarded five stars but the roar of the other diners was so loud. Do not let that stop you from dining here because the food is so good.

Food is consistently good. Attitudes are strong and rude. The maitre’d would only seat us next to the bathroom door(only table available) even though the restaurant was half empty. The service was also poor as we needed to call the waitress over for simple things — like clearing the table between courses. Not going back for a while.

Food is great, however the noise level is very high and tables are small, the restaurant and the bar are always packed. Love the building and the décor inside is great, its a fun place.

The food at Tarry Lodge really is excellent. The spaghetti carbonara, cavatelli with sausage, margarita pizza, and chicken francese was all absolutely delicious. Love the idea of having a dining room upstairs and a more casual café-type setting downstairs. Either way, the food is fantastic and the décor is lovely. It’s definitely one of the best restaurants in the Port Chester food scene and never disappoints.

Was really good when it first opened years ago. Like most place, it has declined a bit each year. Still pretty good but no longer one of my favorites.

Ambience: spacious location and nice décor and seating. A plus is the parking lot adjacent to the restaurant so you don’t need to look for street parking, which is right. Also it is not too loud in the space due to the multiple seating areas. Service: Friendly. Drinks: Went with a local Pilsner which was good with the pizza. Food: Excellent! Black pasta(squid ink) and hanger steak were great. Pizza was also great the crust had the right amount of chew and the different styles are worth trying. Conclusion: Good place to hang out and have a conversation. Second Visit? Yes.

I want to love this place, and i have come here a few times, but it is just ok. Things i like a lot the pizza and the décor. Things i don’t like, they tend to burn the garlic on the pasta and it can be very noisy. For me it’s best for pizza and appetizers at the bar with a glass of wine after work or late night. Pasta and entrees are good, but for a restaurant of this caliber they should be better.

I always have a good time at the Tarry Lodge, definitely one of those places to go for a special occasion. I’ve been here a few times over the years and every time I’ve had a good meal. Tarry Lodge is owned by chef Mario Batali and restauranteur Joe Bastianich, if you know anything about these two you’ll know that this is an Italian restaurant. I love the look and layout of the restaurant; it’s separated into two levels and is compartmentalized — I like that aspect because it keeps it intimate and homey. The food is always a treat. On my most recent visit I started out with the burrata which was paired with grilled asparagus and crostini. The burrata was super creamy and the asparagus were full of flavor. For my main I had the pork chop which sat atop pickled red cabbage and topped with diced apple — the pork chop was juicy and the flavor combinations worked well. For dessert I had the panettone pudding(=O) which came with dulce de leche gelato. Great service, relaxed yet upscale atmosphere, and bangin food — Tarry Lodge will always be a favorite of mine.

My Napoletana trail continues, and this time I head to the MB owned spot, a nice hour drive away from city in upstate NY almost near Greenwich, CT. Though its a pretty big place, make reservations as it was packed with big groups and families on weekends. Got a burrata for an appetizer, really fresh and creamy, hits the spot. The goat cheese in the pizza called out to me, I just could not pass a pie with goat cheese, pistachios, red onion and truffle honey. The crust is thin and crisp. Pie itself sweet and creamy but very flavorful and is a winner in my book. Our other entrée was the pumpkin fiore, again very rich and flavorful, one of better raviolis I have had, though would have liked more filling in the ravioli. Overall, great service and fresh ingredients. The ambiance is not really what I had expected, but overall a great place to dine with friends and family !

This reveiew is not for the food, which was not bad. It is for their unprofessionalism and lack of a response. My fiancé and were considering having our rehearsal dinner here after our venue told us it was one of their recommended restaurants in the area. I filled out the online request form for private events and waited 2 weeks and never heard back. Giving them the benefit of the doubt, we took the trip from Astoria to have lunch. As we were being seated I asked the hostess if she could send over the manager so we could talk to him about options for a private event. She said no problem and a few minutes later we saw her talking to the manager who looked our way as she was speaking to him. He walked by our table several times and didn’t stop to say hello, ask how we were doing or anything, he just stared at us. After lunch we noticed there was a change in shifts and they were gearing up for dinner service. We asked the waiter to send over the manager and he did. At this point it’s a different manager who I then explain to him what we were looking for. He shows us the areas where they hold private parties, but tells us that we would need to call back on Monday to speak to the person that handles all private events. When we told him the date that were looking for he proceeds to tell us that they do not hold private parties on the weekend because they take up too much space at the restaurant. I must have given him the dumbest look because he quickly says that he will let me speak with the events coordinator and she can confirm because she would know more than him. First of all, I never heard of a restaurant not allowing a private event on a weekend, most private events are held on the weekend. Second, if this is truly their policy then maybe they should indicate it on their website. Anyway, we left and I called on Monday as instructed, but of course I could not through to their event coordinator and had to leave a message on her voice-mail. I left a message and guess what, I’m still waiting for a call back almost 2 weeks later. Although the food and wait staff were good, I will not be returning to this restaurant. And as a wedding planner, I would never recommend this place to a bride or anyone wishing to have a private party there.

We came in for dinner in late December and were disappointed with our overall experience. The food was fine however the cadence of our meal ruined our dining experience. We each ordered an appetizer and meal. The meals came out before we finished the salad. We asked the servers to bring the meals back so we could finish our salad and they hovered by us to remove the plate as soon as we picked up the last piece of lettuce. It made the whole experience feel like we were being rushed out and made us feel uncomfortable. We were also seated right behind the hostess stand and there was a cold draft every time the door opened.

Came here for lunch and ordered the black spaghetti and scallops and salad. After coming here a number of times in the past few years, I’ve found the food here great and the service spectacular. Nothing more for me to say about this place.

This is one of my favorite restaurants — after moving out to Seattle, I definitely miss this! I remember growing up near the original Tarry Lodge(no bueno, folks). This one? Bomb. I usually go by myself, sit at the bar, and order pinot noir and the salmon entrée. The bartenders are awesome and highly knowledgeable. The food is extremely consistent, which goes a long way. This place certainly lives up to the hype!

The good, the bad, and the buggy. The food is mediocre, the service is terrible. Turn Tarry Lodge into a pizzeria, because the guanciale we ate saved the entire dinner. Mario Batali should be ashamed for being affiliated with this place. Our meal was not worth the $ 500 we spent. When I go to a restaurant that they are passing off as upscale I expect top notch service. The service were received was inexcusable. I wanted to complain but it was my friend’s birthday dinner and he asked me not to. We were seated by the kitchen and there was a waiters station behind us, so it was a very hot and high traffic area. When we arrived we were missing two people in our party due to a flat tire. The hostess seemed hesitant to seat us. When the two latecomers arrived the rude hostess had the nerve to tell them they need our table by 8pm for another reservation as they wen’t upstairs. It’s inappropriate to rush someone who is spending money at your establishment. That wouldn’t have been a problem if it wasn’t taking so long to get our food. When we were seated the table next to us which was already waiting a while. They called a manager and then left without getting any food. That should have been our sign but we stayed nonetheless as our friend really wanted to try the food. The first round of drinks arrived quickly. They have Moretti on tap. The next round was slower and it took a while before he came back again. It took a long time for our apps to arrive. At this point it was 7pm, our reservation was 5:30. We ordered the pesce mista and the carne mista which include a variety of all the meat and fish appetizers. The crab with piquillos was the best of the fish appetizers and the proscuitto di parma was the best of the meats but I couldn’t tell the difference between the di parma and the San Danielle so they were both equally good. The Calamari Messinese was the worst, tough, chewy, and flavorless. Of the meats I liked the mortadella the least, there was nothing wrong with it but I’m just not a big fan. The guanciale was the star of the meal. That deliciously rich scent of truffles lingered through our second course. One of our late arrivals waited 30 minutes for a glass of chardonnay. I got upset and called a manger. By the time he got to our table she had received it and then he asked if we wanted anything else and we did order another drink which wasn’t even comped and it should have been for the wait. By this time it was already 8pm and the hostess came upstairs twice to give us dirty looks. It took two and a half hours to just order the main course. I ordered the salmon with summer caponata. The caponata was good. The salmon was grilled nicely but flavorless. I would love to say the sauce and flavors of the caponata made up for that but there wasn’t enough sauce. In terms of size it was only a medium sized salmon for $ 30. Salmon is really not THAT expensive, not worth it I go to grab my glass of Moretti and there’s a damn bug in it. Disgusting! I told a random waiter and asked him to bring me another glass and guess what? When the bill came that glass wasn’t comped either, unbelievable! There was another huge fly circling around our table and that got a little annoying as well. There’s one men’s and ladies room on the top floor which is definitely not enough. When I arrived I saw one of the male waiters coming out of the women’s room. While the bathroom is clean the staff couldn’t be bothered to put the toilet paper on the roll. I also noticed that they have no purse hook on the stall. I really wasn’t very enthused with putting my brand new white leather purse on a dirty floor but there was no where else to put it. As I finished my salmon my friends let me taste their entrees. The spaghetti carbonara wasn’t creamy enough. I’ve been to pizza shops that make it better. The birthday boy also commented that his lamb shank was very tough. The visual appearance of the food was fantastic so I’ll give them that. My other friend’s who also ordered pizza were enjoying it. None of us were really satisfied to the point where we wanted to stay for dessert or order more drinks so we asked for the bill. As we left there was water splashed all over the stairs which I had nearly slipped on. Luckily I was holding onto the banister. I alerted one of the waiters nearby but he didn’t seem to care. With such a large staff you would really think the service would be better. I’m not sure what the problem is behind the scene’s here, all I know is the manager really needs to get their business in order. Our waiter seemed like he was doing his best so I don’t want to take it out on him but they really need to evaluate what’s causing all the issues. I don’t think I’ll be back, not even for the guanciale unless I take it to go.

UPDATED Review Rating from 2 Stars to 3. The management team from the Tarry Lodge did respond to my email and were very apologetic about our experience. They felt that something certainly broke down on our visit and assured us this is not a typical experience and is reviewing what caused the problems so they can assure that it does not happen again. As they apparently do care about the customer experience and apparently take great strides in assuring a positive experience through training and testing, we will caulk it up to being a fluke. A such we updated the rating and we will try then once again, perhaps on our way to Philly in a few weeks, or on way home. Again, I cannot stress enough the review was about service and certainly not food! FOODIS5 Stars!!! As such I retract my last comment about them caring for you. Original Review Great Food, Poor Overall Experience Please know I did E-Mail the Restaurants Management team prior to posting with no comments from them for two days. Make no mistake about it, the food was good, it was the service that disappointed us. We(my Wife, our son and his girlfriend) have looked forward to coming to the Tarry Lodge, Port Chester for some time now with us coming in from Warwick, RI. and our son from Philadelphia, PA a three plus hour drive with traffic for both of us(one way). We are big fans of both Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich. First off, the food was great and it in itself deserves five stars, but as we all know it is about the entire dining experience that substantiates a truly great restaurant. We were greeted by our waitress and was asked what we would like to drink. My wife(birthday girl) ordered a glass of white zinfandel and was told rudely by the waitress we do not have that and handed my wife a menu and said she would be back. She offered no recommendations or suggestions and simply just walked away(Note the restaurant was not busy at all). That was strike one. My wife ended up just having water as the wine menu is extensive and she was frustrated as we are not wine connoisseur’s and with the attitude displayed was discouraged. Secondly, we ordered our appetizer and meals and that portion of service was fine however with a scripted«that sounds good» after each order. Before our meals arrived the silverware was placed at the wrong seats(knife for swordfish), which is no big in itself, but showed lack of communication between waitress and staff that assisted her. When our meals did come three of them went to the wrong seat, and we rearranged them ourselves. That was strike two. During our meal the waitress never came to check on us, however did walked by the table many times scanning the table but never asking anything about our meal and with our drinks empty and never asked if we would like to order additional drinks. Then I asked if I could get another drink and she was glad to accommodate and walked away, without asking if anyone else wanted another.(Strike Three) Overall, like I said the food was great, however we did cut our meal short and went elsewhere for desert as this waitress made us feel unwelcomed and could care less that we were there. Please know she was not aware of us being there for a special occasion or traveled to get to your destination, which should have made no difference. In conclusion, we had much higher expectations of the experience as we know the ownership demands perfection in everything and everyone encountered. This certainly was not the case and know we do not expect perfection as we understand people are human however this waitress ruined what was expected to be a good experience in such a fine dining establishment. We were hoping this could be a regular stop on the way to visit our son a few times a year but we will not be back due to the service experience. It should also be noted that exactly one year ago, we had reservations for this restaurant and ran into major traffic and was going to be late. We called ahead and told the person who answered we were going to be late due to traffic by about 30 minutes and was told they would not hold the reservation for us. It appears there is a common thread that they could care less about you.

THISISTHEPLACE! Outstanding food inside a comfy, nice restaurant. From the same group as Del Posto and Casa Mono, yet half the price since not in NYC. The quality of the food will have you dreaming about it for months to come. The staff is attentive and friendly, willing to help you navigate your selection. I never order pasta out, but went for the bolognese. So incredibly happy with my choice. Pasta is fresh, sauce is light yet packed with flavor. My father ordered the black pasta that he drives 1 hour to eat because no one makes it better! Tastes like the sea but not overwhelming. Must spot in area!

This is a huge restaurant in downtown portchester. The area doesn’t quite exactly match the caliber of restaurant it is, but they make it work well. The portions are large, the service is excellent and the wine list is superb. If there is a bottle that you enjoyed with your meal, you can walk around corner and pick it up at their own wine store. They have a small parking lot diagonally across the street but you’re better off finding parking on the street if possible. Their pizzas are excellent and they whip up some of the best Eggplant parm that I’ve ever had. Desserts are to die for.

My husband and I came here for dinner last night and had such a great experience. The food was delicious and the staff was attentive, informative & very nice! Ambiance is gorgeous! Would definitely come back here! They served us fresh focaccia as soon as we sat down. We had a bunch of questions about the menu of which the waiter was very knowledgeable of, he also helped us pick a bottle of wine from the list. We ended up ordering the Prosciutto San Daniele and the Frutti Di Mare for appetizer, big portions and both fresh & tasty. For dinner, I had the Fusilli alla Crazy Bastard(little sweet but just what I wanted) and my husband had the Grilled Ribeye Tagliata with maitakes and aceto manodori(he loved it). Overall an awesome experience & great way to spend a Friday night.
