For The Milk Shake Factory, tradition means everything. It means finding the best quality, freshest milk straight from Pennsylvania’s renowned dairy farms. Our flavorings are homemade, just like our great-​grandparents would have demanded it. Our chocolate is created from a family recipe by Pittsburgh’s-own, Edward Marc Chocolatier.

History

Established in 1914.

In 1914, a husband-​wife team of European immigrants – our great-​grandparents – founded a small soda fountain in Pittsburgh’s Victorian South Side. At the time, a milkshake was a true treat for the whole family. Home refrigeration was a luxury few could afford, so to savor the taste of ice cream, let alone the thick chill of a handmade milkshake, was cause for an excursion to a soda fountain.

The Milk Shake Factory conjures memories (and flavors) of a bygone era. Today, we offer 55 flavors of milkshake, each handmade with loving care on an old-​fashioned Bastian-​Blessing soda fountain. We maintain the same commitment to tradition you might expect from a soda jerk in 1914.

Owned and operated to this day by fourth generation confectioners who faithfully uphold the traditions begun by our great-​grandparents nearly 100 years ago, The Milk Shake Factory stands as one of the last of the truly great ice cream parlors – one of the premier ice cream shops in all of Pittsburgh, if not the nation.
