Specialties

Fox Chapel Country Day School helps students to grow academically, develop physical skills, appreciate the arts, and gain self-confidence. Country Day School endeavors to reach these goals by providing a positive, unhurried environment that promotes inquiry, discovery, creativity and an enthusiasm for learning.

Basic skills are developed and strengthened through a traditional but flexible program of instruction, complemented by outdoor time for children to play and to explore the natural setting of the school. To enhance each child’s potential for success, the school encourages and provides many opportunities for close, supportive interaction among students, teachers, and parents.

Country Day takes pride in building a constructive and harmonious working relationship between home and school, essential to the accomplishment of our mission. In a nurturing atmosphere, the school aims to foster mutual respect and self-esteem.

History

Established in 1948.

Fox Chapel Country Day School began with eighteen children in a Nursery school class, housed on the third floor of the Fox Chapel Community Church (now Christ Church Fox Chapel) building. Throughout the 1950’s, the search began for a permanent location for the school, as well as adding a grade level a year to grow the school.

In 1960, Richard K. Whiteman was appointed Head of School, a tenure that would continue for 40 years. The school continued to grow with enrollment, changing the physical buildings to meet the needs, and nurturing the students as a place to learn and develop.

In 1970, the school became accredited by the Pennsylvania Association of Private Academic Schools (PAPAS).

In 1998, Fox Chapel Country Day School celebrated its 50th Anniversary. A major addition to join the two buildings and create a space for Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten was completed in 1999. The 20 year old playground was replaced prior to the 2011 – 2012 school year.
