it’s almost that time again… it doesn’t get much better than those two ladies who were majorettes in college… and who still live the dream every july fourth. cellulite jiggling, caked-on makeup, and some of the best baton skills you’ve ever seen from a 66 year old. classic cars, kiddies on bikes with training wheels, city councilfolks throwing jolly ranchers, and lots o’ bagpipes(cue my father’s weeping — man loves bagpipes). the piedmont parade is timeless. but what i love most about this annual event is that by attending it becomes apparent that you don’t have to be a gun-slinging, red state-inhabiting, terrorist-hunting, chevy-driving asshole to love your country more than your firstborn. these privelaged, volvo-driving, whole foods shopping, outspoken, goat cheese-eating, sauvignon blanc-drinking, npr-blasting piedmonters LOVETHEMSOMEAMERICA!

This is probably one of the best small-town parades I’ve ever been too. It includes all of the elements that make a 4th of July parade so great — dig it: — Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts — Horses and Fire Engines — Antique Cars and Shriners — Kids riding decorated bikes — Marching bands — Groups of families and neighbors on the sidelines, cheering on their friends and family marching in the parade — American flags galore — Cheerleaders — Politicians(and amazingly enough, everyone seems to like them!) — Tennis ladies marching with their racquets — Lots and lots of dogs, some wearing cute little outfits But don’t take my word for it — check it out yourself this 4th of July and enjoy!
