Unwelcoming, but they’ve got the best vintage(mostly MCM and 60s, 70s art and furniture) stuff in the area. OLC down the street takes the cake for impressing me though, not as much Memphis Milano here. Prices are outrageous but realistic considering the products. I too much enjoy«the deal» to enjoy this place. If I wanted to buy something at its vintage value I’d go buy it on eBay. Auctions can get you this stuff for cheaper(and I suspect that’s his main source of purchasing power). 4 stars for an impressive selection, 1 off for being a pretty terrible shopkeeper. It’s also hard to get around.

The Michaels are an awesome duo and have a great sense of humor too. The sell an eclectic mix of mid century modern, danish and deco furniture and collectables. You have to visit often because nothing lasts long.

The guy on the floor was not the most welcoming guy! We were shopping for some furniture on the same row and visited several other stores who were all quite welcoming(and we bought a couch from a store next door). The guy literally told us that it was not our living room! Hope you enjoy your furniture in your store for a long time.

Michael’s store could be a museum for mid century pieces– except that the exhibit pieces can be purchased. A friend and I recently happened upon Mode Moderne and ooh-ed and aah-ed our way through the shop(two floors! more in the basement!). We definitely didn’t look like the typical clientele who is able to casually drop 3k for a lamp or lounge chair, but Michael was still very welcoming and happy to answer questions we had about pieces. I found a desk that I fell in love with and consequently purchased after Michael offered a deal that I could not walk away from(discount AND next day free delivery + set-up). Great experience– very personable and very great items available at fair prices. Really great classics to be found– from Eames to the Arco lamp to new Herman Miller pieces as well.

Mode Moderne is our favorite place to browse and buy furniture in all of Philly. They constantly find and bring in great classic pieces from the mid-modern period. Many pieces in great condition by the usual suspects(Eames, Nelson, Saarinen, etc), as well as lovely gems from lesser known places. We picked up a beautifully retro Pierre Jeanneret scissor chair for a bargain. Michael and Michael(the two owners) know their stuff, inside and out. Always helpful and willing to make a recommendation. They have access to a great re-upholsterer as well! If you’re seriously looking, ask what their best price is and you may be pleasantly surprised — a piece you thought was out of your budget suddenly is affordable! They also have the full HERMANMILLER or KNOLL catalogs in store and if they don’t have it at present, they can order it for you, again at a better value than buying straight from the website online.

I purchased a Herman Miller ergonomic-pain-relief chair from Mode Moderne(back injury) and the customer service here is top-notch. The chair quality is also excellent. Someday I hope to be able to come back to shop some more, as they carry some rare and unique furniture and household items. You won’t find any particle board furniture or Ikea-quality furniture here. When you buy at M.M., the furniture is an investment, that will last you many years, if not, decades. After ordering my chair, I enjoyed a delicious lunch two doors down at Café Olé.

Some nice pieces of mod mod mod mod mod to be had. As with most awesome home furnishing stores, this one’s a little out of my price range, but don’t let that stop you. There’s plenty of fine furniture and the like here for you to bring home. While you’re at it, please buy a small gift for me. In fact, I’d like the Prototype Chair from 1968 by Gruizenga in the window. It’s super mod awesome. You can call it my finder’s fee or something. Modliness is next to godliness.

This is one of my favorite stores in Philadelphia. They have all of the best mid century modern classics, stuff you can’t find anywhere else. The owner is usually around, and he is always happy to answer questions or tell you the history of a piece. This stuff is expensive, but it’s all collectable and going up in value — so it’s an investment, like art. If you are walking around Old City, this is a great place to check out.

If you want to see the mid century classics in their original form and wonder why new vintage pieces cost so much, then head over to Mode Moderne and check out the prices of these collectable antiques that have only increased in value year after year, after year. In todays up and down economy there is one guaranteed market buster, and that is mid century modern classic furniture that stands the test of time. No land fill«fillers» here! Mode Moderne offers all of these classics with honest pricing(disclosing any wear and tear that may be present and should be disclosed when purchasing any collectable piece. Talk to the owner and he’ll be more than glad to talk to you about any pieces that you may have an interest in finding. Don’t get burnt by slick reproductions at other stores. These are the originals and its a museum experience that’ll get your blood pumping for the mid century classics. The«Golden Age» of furniture.
