Sonoma Compost specializes in organic compost and mulch products for a variety of applications including backyard gardens, small and large landscaping projects, as well as farming and grape-​growing.

We produce compost designed for your specific needs: we have both high and low nitrogen composts and products that are specially designed for clay or sandy soils.

Our composts and mulches are produced from recycled yard trimmings and vegetal food scraps and are registered with CDFA and OMRI for use in organic agriculture.

We test out material regularly for pathogens and pesticides to assure the highest quality compost on the market.

Compost adds valuable nutrients and organic matter to soils and mulch provides important water retention and weed control qualities.

Sonoma Compost operates the regional compost facility for all of Sonoma County, processing about 100,000 tons of yard debris annually.

History

Established in 1993.

Sonoma Compost is under contract to the Sonoma County Waste Management Agency to operate this regional facility. It has been a collaborative effort to develop this successful diversion program that keeps valuable yard debris out of the landfill and turns it into marketable and highly desired products.

Sonoma Compost represents the largest «closed-​loop» recycling program in Sonoma County. Yard debris produced in Sonoma County is recycled here, then turned into compost and mulches which are then returned to local soils.

I bought 2 cu-​yds of Feather-​Lite amended soil in February 2015 for a raised bed vegetable garden. In March I planted lettuce. The sprouts would get about ¼ inch tall and would then all be eaten. I found grubs and two other types of worms (wireworms and one unidentified type) in the soil. I have tried to talk to someone at SC but they will not return my calls. I also tried to contact them by email («ask an expert») but they do not respond to that either. I’m still trying to deal with the worm infested soil I put in my raised bed.

This is a great place. The best compost resourse in the bay area. Price is half of what I used to pay for compost mix full of sand that was supposedly ready to use. i have been buying their compost for more than 2 years now. I use about 2 – 3 cubic yards a year to keep my garden going. Ita easy for me because i ha e a big truck which i ise to pick up a yard at a time. you can get bags and fill them up with your compost if you prefer. they have bio char and some other goodies as well.
Kevin, the compost is organic. They test it. If it was not organic it would not be OMRI CERTIFIED. This year to the Hairloom Expo in Santa Rosa, usually in september and visit the lectures by the owner. You will learn everything about their compost mixes.
To the lady that is complaining about the plastic particals, I find them as well but rarely. It is hard to make compost in such large scale and be plastic free. You can try it but then you have to sell it at $ 100 per cubic yard or more.
I always recommend them to my friends and I will keep doing it. I just wish they had straight composted manure and nothing else added. Would be great.

Best spot to pick up compost if you need it in bulk. Not a lot of resources like this around so I’m grateful they exist. Don’t forget to check out RecycleTown on your way out (turn left coming down the hill toward the households hazardous recycling area)

My husband recently bought a yard of compost from Sonoma Compost. He asked the guy working there what they had that was fine in texture, with no bark or sticks or large clumps, but still relatively affordable. The guy sold him compost that was full of bark and sticks! By the time my husband realized this, it had already been loaded into his truck, so he decided to make do with it. But we feel that the employee misrepresented the product in a big way. We were planning to use this compost as potting soil, and it really won’t work very well for that because of all the bark and sticks.
As if that weren’t bad enough, my husband went ahead and transplanted about 150 pepper plants into larger pots with this compost, and half of them were dead within 48 hours. We have never had anything like this happen before when using composted manure from local farms. We only went to Sonoma Compost because our usual suppliers were out. So in the end, we paid twice as much for a product that is totally unusable, and we have a bunch of dead pepper plants. Thanks a lot, Sonoma Compost! We will never buy your compost again.

I bought 4 yards of compost at Sonoma Compost. Their prices are great but there’s so much ground up plastic in their product that I had to pay my employee to clean it up which makes it the most expensive compost I’ve ever bought.

Warning to those retrieving directions from Google Maps (or Android phone users): I don’t think there’s actually an entrance through Roblar. Make sure you turn on Mecham Rd. About a ½-​mile down, you’ll see a sign on your right for both the dump and Sonoma Compost.
Picked up 5 bags (could only fill up Hefty 30 lb. bags halfway before they got too heavy) of a variety of compost. The lady inside of the office, whose name I did not get, was very friendly and informative, offering advice on which types of compost are good for what gardening purpose. The compost piles are placed atop the ground and are self-​serve for baggers. Bring a shovel and some gloves, if getting too dirty is a concern. The current price per bag is $ 1.25, so this is a helluva deal and beats $ 10 bags at local nurseries and big chains (unless you need a variety of different composts obtained from different sources). There might be bits and pieces of plastic, but their occurrence was few and far between.
Along with compost, there was a wide variety of mulch and lumber. I briefly scanned the lumber piles and saw fir, redwood, and other types, which are sold at a low price and per foot. Bring cash or your checkbook if your total ends up being less than $ 10, or there will be a $ 1 surcharge.
Overall, an awesome resource to have so close to home. Great place, friendly people!

We headed up here at weekend to buy some of their new Biodynamic High Test Compost. It was a little confusing finding place, but we eventually found the signs and drove up the gravel road to find the retail store. The staff is really friendly and knowledgeable. The sell their compost by the half cubic yard and offer bags for about $ 2 each. The Biodynamic High Test Compost was about $ 40 for cubic yard.
They’ll dump the compost onto the ground and it’s up to you to shovel it into your containers. If you have a truck, they’ll dump it onto your bed.
The compost is really good. It’s really fine and dark. There’s no stinky smell at all. We look foward to adding this stuff into our gardens and yard.
