Description

Specialties

Providence Aikikai offers classes in the Japanese martial art of Aikido.

Aikido is a unique martial art that emphasizes harmonizing with the energy of the attacker and redirecting that energy to neutralize the attack.

Aikido has no competitions or tournaments. Instead, students practice cooperatively alternating roles of attacker and defender in order to master its complex techniques.

We are also fortunate to have a direct lineage to O-Sensei, the Founder of Aikido, through the late Kanai Sensei (one of O-Sensei’s last uchi deshi or live-in apprentices). Our chief instructor was a long time student of Kanai Sensei.

We also plan to offer classes in Iaido, the classical art of Japanese swordsmanship.

History

Established in 2012.

Aikido — Providence Aikikai was founded in June 2012 by David Halprin & Paul Sheedy. David has been the Chief Instructor of Framingham (MA) Aikikai for twelve years. Paul studied at Framingham for ten years prior to moving to Providence.

In order to continue with their own training, and to reach more people with the great martial art of Aikido, they founded Providence Aikikai.

Shortly thereafter, they were joined by Wayne Sherman, Chief Instructor of Central Rhode Island Aikikai, who merged his dojo into the new one.

David, Wayne and Paul continue as the technical and administrative leaders of the dojo.

The dojo provides instruction in the martial art of Aikido, and has both an adults and children’s program. We plan to also offer classes in Iaido, the traditional art of Japanese swordsmanship.

Aikido — Providence Aikikai is a member of the United States Aikido Federation.
