Description

Specialties

Whalebone is a family owned and operated winery on the Vineyard Drive wine trail in Paso Robles, California. We specialize primarily in red wines, especially Cabernet Sauvignon. Our vineyard is 100% dry land farmed west side Cabernet Sauvignon — this is what we are most known for, along with our Cabernet blends. We produce BOB Wine, a Cab blend that has developed a cult following since Bob first created it as a home winemaker in the ‘90s. You can also find Paso Robles Zinfandel, as well as Paso Robles Rhone blends in our Tasting Barn.

Whalebone also offers artisan Paso Robles olive oil and vinegar tastings, and we always have cheeses, salami, and local sheep milk ice cream for hungry tasters.

History

Established in 1989.

In 1989, well ahead of the Paso Robles vineyard boom Bob and Jan Simpson planted a small vineyard. Ten acres were ripped to four feet, yielding large calcareous rocks laden with whalebones and other marine fossils — thus the origin of the vineyard and winery’s name. On this hillside reminiscent of a moonscape, they planted exclusively Cabernet Sauvignon.

From the beginning, the fruit sold easily for top dollar. In 1994, one ton was reserved for home made wine. This original wine, called BOB WINE, had a label made out of duct tape. Traveling to various hunting and fishing spots, Bob always brought along a bottle or two. Many of Bob’s friends with were reluctant to try the garage wine, but it soon became a prized gift and mini cult favorite.

After our first release, 2001 Whalebone Cabernet Sauvignon, was such a hit, we hired veteran winemaker Handsome Dan Kleck to ramp up production. The Tasting Barn, born on a bar napkin in 2003, was completed in time for the 2007 Wine Festival.

Business Owner

Bob and Janalyn planted Whalebone Vineyard with 100% Paso Robles west side Cabernet Sauvignon in 1989 with the intent to sell their fruit to local wineries. They kept one ton for themselves which became the now infamous BOB Wine — a fan favorite Cab blend at Whalebone. We are a family run winery known for our hilltop views and the warm, fun atmosphere. Stop by and enjoy our Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet blends, and our red and white Rhones!
