Canterbury Tails Dog Resort

We love this place. Unfortunately we have been using another pet boarding place simply because it’s much closer to us, but we would and have recommended Cantebury to many friends and family that needed a place for their fur babies. The owners are fantastic and personable, the grounds are clean and impressive and you just can’t beat the care your pets receive.

This place is amazing! We have a spoiled princess of a beagle who is in need of constant love and attention and this place never fails to provide for her! She comes back well loved and tried! They even take in to account that she is sometimes uneasy with other dogs so they make sure she has play time with smaller groups! I am a Veterinary technician and I take the care of my animals and others very seriously and this is the only place I would trust!

If you want your dog returned to you with a large wound, half-​starved, neglected and traumatized, this is the place for you.
If you like being lied to about what happened to your dog, this is your kind of place.
If you want to pay for Rx administration and find later meds were not given, this is the place for you.
If you decide to shorten your vacation and want to pay full price for each day you did not use, this is the place for you.
If you enjoy dealing with a rigid unconcerned bureaucracy you will love this place.

We have 3 cats and 2 Border Collies and we could not be happier with Canterbury Tales. Shane and Eileen Beattie have built an outstanding boarding facility! All of our animals are given the finest of care from the entire Canterbury staff. A spotlessly clean facility where every detail has been attended to… thank you for providing a safe and secure home away from home for our beloved pets…

Wow! This is an amazing place!!! We live in Santa Barbara and we’re going to a concert at the fair and had no dog sitter. The hotel recommended Canterbury Tails. I was a bit nervous as we have not had good luck with boarding in the past. The other concern is one of our dogs needs medication.
From the time we showed up to the time we picked up our VERY happy little guys it was great!!! The staff and facility is wonderful. We soooo wish we had something of this quality here. Btw… they have air conditioning and heat in the dogs private cottages.
Very well done Canterbury Tails!!! We may just come to spend a couple days in Paso just so Rudy and Rosie can come there to have a great time!!! Thank you

We love this place!!! The staff is great. They remember Kona and Mazie every time. They have cared for all of our dogs when we leave town. They have been very sincere when finding out our two big dogs passed away. I swear our little dogs get SUPER EXCITED when we drop them off. They are very spoiled when staying at the dog resort. We treat our dogs like a part of the family, so knowing that they have beds up off the ground and treats at night makes us very happy and our trips enjoyable knowing our babies are well taken care of. Thank you so much for loving our puppies as much as we do!!! We can’t wait to see them tomorrow!!!

We boarded 3 min pins last July.
They had just been to their Vet, all 3 healthy.
On the 3^rd day we where called, and told one was found dead.
We will never know how or why.

The good: the facility is clean and beautiful. Everyone we have interacted with there has been very nice.
The bad: we have boarded our dogs at Canterbury Tails quite a few times over the past few years. The last two times have been disappointing. We always bring our own food for our dogs to be fed. One dog takes medication so I break up the pill and put it into individually prepared bags to be fed at each meal (morning and night). The other dog is sent with a large bag of food with instructions to feed 1 cup morning and night. I always count and keep track of the number of bags with medication that I’m sending. The last two times that we’ve boarded with them I’ve received back an odd assortment of unused food upon picking up my dogs (in September of 2013 I was given back 3 fewer prepared bags than I should have and in February of 2014 I was given back 1 more than I should have). This really doesn’t make sense to me and I’m wondering what happened to the missing food (did they give our unmedicated dog food with medication? (September stay) and did they not feed our medicated dog one of her meals? (February stay)).
Additionally, they charged me for «administering medication» for the February stay. Since the medication is broken up into her food already it would be nearly impossible to administer medication. Our dog eats the medication with her food without issue. It’s more work for them to measure out and scoop our unmedicated dog’s food. In fact, if we did not make them aware of the fact that one dog receives medication they would not even know that she does. I called and asked for clarification about this extra charge and the employee said that she would «call me right back.» It has been 5 days since I called and I have not received a call back. I also sent an e-​mail to the e-​mail address listed on their website and have not heard back.
I will not personally be using them again in the future and do not recommend using them. It’s concerning that they do not follow feeding instructions, charge for extras that are not legitimate, and do not follow up appropriately to phone calls and e-​mails.

We always take our dogs here. The staff is wonderful and my dogs are well treated. Couldn’t imagine taking them anywhere else.

So glad that I finally have time to write down a review for this place. I cannot express enough how impressed I am with this facility. My dog is a happy, mellow guy. He has never been traumatized or unhappy when coming home from boarding. But, at the same time, he has never been ecstatic to arrive at a boarding facility. Well, at Canterbury Tails, its like Christmas has come early. When I get him out of the car his tail goes 90 mph, his body wiggles, and he romps up to the gate to go inside. When the wonderful staff greet him and let him in, he never looks back. Its almost insulting. I honestly think I could leave him there for 3 months and he would be totally happy with the situation. Other boarding places may tell you that your dog got to get out and play, but you never are really sure if they did. Not at CT! It is obvious that Koda has had a rip-​roaring good time with his buddies because unless I ask to have him bathed, he is coated in dust and slobber from his HOURS in the play yard. It is also apparent when he peacefully passes out in my back seat. I remember on my first visit to CT, they showed me the rooms that the dogs stay in… nicer than my house. They also asked if Koda would be okay with a «sleep over» with a lab that shared his playing style and personality. Seriously, no wonder my dog doesn’t want to come home! I have yet to find a kennel of this caliber anywhere else. They know me and Koda as soon as I drive up, and I have never had to repeat feeding instructions to them. When I have changed his feeding regimen and let them know, they always confirm the details and actually pay attention to what I am saying. They feed lunch which is also great, because Koda’s stomach fairs so much better on 3x a day small meals. Cannot say enough good things about this place! If you want to know that your dog will have more fun than he does at home, with amazing and attentive staff, this is the place for you.

I’d love to give this place more stars since the location/​facility is beautiful and clean, and the staff is nice. But after picking up our two pups from a 3 night stay (we were visiting the area from LA) — they both had scratch marks on their bodies, and our girl pup had a pretty deep (and bleeding) bite wound on her side. I fear that they weren’t being watched well enough in the play yard, and don’t get me wrong — my dogs love to play rough and hard and do occasionally get injured — but I am just disappointed that a wound that size (let alone the incident that caused it) went unseen and unmentioned by any of the staff.

If my dog regularly wore socks, Canterbury Tails would have both rocked them and then knocked them off entirely.
Our Leonberger recently spent five nights at Canterbury. It was his first night away from us in well over a year and his first away from us that was not spent with other family members. Here is why we chose Canterbury:
–Largest private spaces we could find (our dog had a house with the interior measuring about 8’x12’ with two private outdoor runs, and large windows)
–Extremely clean houses
–Fully air-​conditioned houses (we were away during triple digit temperatures and his house was kept below 70°F)
–No «walls of crates» the dogs all have houses, not just a crate on a shelf in a closet
–A secure facility — the dog houses are behind a six foot gate which is itself behind a locked four foot gate
–Private one-​on-​one time each day
— Shade — there are several large leafy trees that shade the houses and the outdoor play area
–Extra care (several bowls of ice each day for crunching, frozen broccoli treats)
–Extra communication (daily phone calls to discuss what he ate, how he played, etc, etc)

We dropped off our 11 month old Australian cattle/​Shepard mix here for 4 nights while we had gone on vacation. It was our first time boarding him, so I was a little worried about how he would do. We dropped him off a clean, unsure puppy, and we picked up a dirty, exhausted dog! He seemed to have so much fun! I had called the staff after the first day to see how he was doing, and they informed me he was playing, eating and keeping himself occupied! The only thing that made me a little upset about the visit was how I felt like I was hurried to leave once dropping him off; when my mother picked him up, she too felt hurried off. Otherwise, I would definitely bring my dog back to this place if we ever need to board him again.

Our two small dogs have been here a number of times as we visit the area frequently. This included a longer stint during our wedding this past June. Each time they’ve came back completely exhausted from their play time and always seem really happy.
They are great people here that really seem to care about the dogs and love what they do. We will happily continue to bring our business here. It is very reasonably priced especially given the facility.

My Shetland Sheepdog, Dolan, first stayed at Canterbury Tails for one night in Spring 2010, when they first opened. Never before or since have I felt more comfortable leaving him with strangers — the owners were so sweet and kind, and you can tell they truly love and understand dogs. That night, «Dolan» sent me a few text messages reassuring me he was having a blast — this was a wonderful and comforting touch, as I rarely have to be apart from him.
I was amazed by the facilities. The English-​style dog «homes» are beautiful. There are doggie-​sized beds, little fenced-​in courtyards, and heaters (great for the cold Paso mornings), as well as a larger play area for the dogs where owners can also come visit, BYOB some wine, and enjoy some doggie time.
Now (Winter 2012) we are a two-​dog family, and I picked up my Sheltie and Labrador earlier this evening — it was our Lab’s first stay and our Sheltie’s second stay. They are wiped out — which never happens — because they had SUCH a fun time with their new doggie friends at the resort (once you see it you’ll know why I can’t being myself to call it a kennel!). The owners gave me a full report, including a schedule of their day, and I was tickled that they had paid so much attention to my boys.
I wholeheartedly recommend this amazing pup resort a hundred times over!

Lavender-​scented sheets… Temperature-​controlled SUITES… Roasted Chicken dinners… I’m not describing the amenities at the Hyatt, but what this Dog RESORT has to offer you! That’s right, DOG RESORT!
We were extremely fortunate to find this place, only a 20 minute drive away from the girlfriend’s mom’s place out in Paso. As we drove up the private road to this beautiful ranch, I began hearing classical music in my head. As we pull up, I’m looking around for kennels, cages, or something. Instead I see these small individual mini-​homes, at which point I’m confused, seeing that this place is suppose to be for dogs and not people.
As we’re greeted by one of the employees, we fill out the paperwork and provide her with our dog’s documentation, and his food. We then get walked over to these mini-​homes, and sure enough, they’re for the DOGS! Yeah, that’s right… DOG SUITES. We walked into a lavender-​scented, temperature and humidity-​controlled suite, with a dog bed big and plush enough for a small child, artwork on the walls, and soft relaxing music playing through the sound system inside the suite. At this point, I’m trying to process all this and thinking about how much I can possibly bribe them with, so that I can stay here with the dog. I don’t think I myself, have stayed in a hotel room this nice and with these amenities before!
In addition to the ridiculous commodities, I could not feel more comforted with leaving Gordo here, as the dogs are provided with a few walks a day, and have a huge space to play and run around. All dogs are carefully screened and grouped accordingly, so you don’t have to worry about your dog getting hurt or feeling uncomfortable. Surprisingly enough, Gordo was able to overcome his asperger-​like tendencies and apparently, was not only social enough to play with both packs, but was even cool enough to let another dog crash with him overnight! I was extremely happy to hear this.
When we picked him up the next day, we met the awesome Australian couple who run the resort, who are extremely knowledgeable and hospitable, as is the rest of their staff. It was most evident that Gordo had a blast, despite his obvious separation anxiety. He obviously had such a blast, that not only did he sleep the entire way back home, but was out until the next morning. Something I have never seen before…
So after hearing about how ridiculously baller this place, the best part about it is how insanely affordable it is. I won’t give away how much it cost us, although I will say that the local boarding place down the street from me in Glassel Park was charging us $ 20 more to keep him overnight, where the accommodations are no where close to what your dog is being provided with here.
So for you LA peeps that are planning on taking a trip up North somewhere and need a place to leave your dogs, here it is.
I still haven’t given up on trying to convince them to let me stay…

Great place, dogs hardly want to leave with very reasonalbel prices. The couple that runs the place makes both the dogs and the owners feel like home.

This place was adorable and our Chihuahua-​Pug had a great time!
We were getting married in the area and staying at a hotel that didn’t allow pets. We needed to make sure that our Lizzie was taken care of for a couple days. We brought her to Caterbury Tails on a Friday afternoon until Sunday morning after the wedding. The place was great and she was very comfortable there. They were patient with us when we called to check in on her (she was in playing with the «tiny tots» when we called!)
We also had friends that were coming to the wedding, so they brought their dog Tempo (who is one of Lizzie’s playmates) to stay as well! We told the staff that we knew eachother so they made sure to put Lizzie and her pal Tempo in together! From what we heard later, they stayed up playing like they were having a sleep over! Since they knew about the wedding, they even decorated their room like a little bridal suite! And they even sent Lizzie home with a white bridal box of dog biscuits!
We usually keep our dog with us, but if we ever need a place for her on the central coast again we’ll be back to Canterbury-​Tails!

We had to bring our dog with us for the Memorial Day weekend, and as our friends had scheduled a limo for wine tasting, we were desperately looking for a pet sitter location. We were staying at the Hampton Inn and the staff there had only one recommendation for us, and luckily it was Canterbury Tails.
They were able to accommodate us at the last minute for dog day care. We arrived to drop off our dog at an impeccably clean and well equipped facility. Our dog, who is usually fairly skittish around new people, was very calm and comfortable when we arrived to pick him up later in the afternoon. He seemed to have had a great stay, and the rate was extremely reasonable.
We will definitely be using Canterbury Tails the next time we bring our dog to Paso Robles. Great job, guys!
