Specialties
We specialize in providing quality homecare for people experiencing physical or mental challenges. Our in-home caregivers can provide household support services — meal preparation, light housekeeping —, transportation to appointment, assistance with personal hygiene and grooming, and especially companionship. We will customize our services to meet your needs from a single 4 hour shift up to full time 24 hour a day, 7 days a week live-in care.
Our personal emergency response system, DirectLink, allows you to live safely and independently in the comfort of your own home. Simply pressing the wireless button when you need help, alerts the trained call center operator to alert 911 or any pre-arranged emergency contact.
Home Helpers is licensed by the Illinois Department of Health. Our fully trained caregivers are our employees. We pay all payroll taxes, worker’s compensation insurance, and liability insurance. In addition we do background checks and fingerprinting to assure your safety.
History
Established in 2008.
After many years experience in family run service businesses, long time friends, Lisa and Tom Merlin and Joy Schaefer, opened Home Helpers of Northeastern Illinois as an outreach to help others to care for themselves and their loved ones. Using our own experiences in providing home care for our parents, Lisa, Tom and Joy can place members of their trained staff with their clients. As we are fond of saying, «If we have spared anyone the agony of what we went through to find good care for our parents, we have done our job.»
We are active in our community by supporting our local Chambers of Commerce, working with many community charitable organizations.
Meet the Business Owner
Tom M.
Business Owner
Tom Merlin owned a coin laundry/dry cleaners for more than 25 years with his parents. After Mom and Dad decided to retire, Tom and his wife, Lisa, and long-time friend decided to open Home Helpers of Northeastern Illinois. Experience in care for our own parents revealed that there is an increasing need to provide caregiving services for people who can no longer care for themselves. While the mainstay of our business is senior care, our services extend to developmentally disabled children and adults. We provide respite or short term care for all ages.
