Animé Source KC is the only dedicated manga store in the KC area, so for that alone it gets 3 stars. They run a game night every Friday from 6 – 8PM and an animé screening every Saturday night from 6 – 8PM, both of which are free to attend, so for that, it gets an extra star. The owner, Alex, is a software engineer by trade and runs the shop so that there will be a place for otakus to go to in the MoKan area. He is very laid back, which is either a plus or a minus. Personally, I like that I can ask his opinion on a manga or animé and find out what he really thinks, or that I can show up for a game night or other event and not feel pressured in any way to make a purchase. If, for instance, you want an age-appropriate reading recommendation for a child, or a genre-appropriate suggestion for a gift for a friend(or yourself) Alex is — the — person to go to. He’s basically the polar opposite of «Comic Book Guy» from the Simpsons. So for that, it gets a fifth star. Still, as others have pointed out, it would be nice if they had some more fun, inexpensive«impulse» items. I think that Animé Source KC began life as a carefully curated selection for hardcore geeks /otakus, and has expanded by trial-and-error from there. But, the store really has improved drastically over the past nine months in terms of selection, and much of my favorite manga and animé I have discovered through the recommendations of the owner and other patrons. It’s well worth a visit.

I’d absolutely gladly give this place a gazillion stars because my 11 year old is obsessed(and I’m putting it mildly) with all things Animé and Manga. BUT, I can’t because, while it’s a fun store run by a really kind, engaging gentleman, as I was told by the person who took my child the first time, filled with all the things that Otakus(I learned that word from my kid– I feel so cool) love, the first time I went, and then again today, the young woman working there was possibly the worst clerk I’ve ever run across anywhere in my almost 4 decades on the planet. Ok, maybe not the worst, because some clerks are rude– she’s not rude. But she’s not nice. She’s not anything at all, because she NEVERSAYSANYTHING!!! No hello, no ‘how can I help you today?,’ not even a thank you and/or goodbye when we left. She doesn’t even bother getting up out of her chair. She just plays on her iPad the whole time. She’s not a worker, she’s a seat filler. Luckily, my child is too young to notice how rude it is to be treated this way, but I’m not, and frankly it pisses me off. At least mutter a ‘hi’- I mean COMEON! I’m not asking too much! I’m barely asking for anything. Acknowledge my presence and the fact that my purchases help pay your salary. But anyway, rant over– this place has a great selection of tshirts, costumes, books, movies, décor, and lots more for the Japanese comic obsessed.
