University of Maine-Orono

I have only great things to say about my alma mater. The professors are fantastic, my adviser (who is very well-​known in the political science community) was so amazing and helpful, and the campus facilities (including the honors college dorm and cafeteria) are great. The people are a mixed bag, like any campus — there are people who will be your friends for life, there are people you’ll probably never talk to again as adults, and there are people you’ll be glad to leave behind. It’s the good ones that will make a difference in your life. In terms of job prospects, career services leaves much to be desired (their job posting site is pretty pitiful compared to others) and will absolutely NOT be the key to securing a job afterwards, but I’ve been able to find gainful employment consistently after graduation through resourcefulness and hard work. I am so glad to have chosen UMaine!

I have three degrees from the University of Maine. Obviously, I think I have received a decent education.

This review is more as an outsider privileged to use campus facilities while I visited my sister, who chairs the Drama and Dance Department. We used the Rec Building facilities: wow, beautiful. The equipment in the gym was top of the line, and better than I have in my usual gym at home. What a hoot to try to swim against the current in the circular pool within the larger pool, which also came with standard lap lanes. Exiting the pool, we sat in the sauna and steamed our sore bodies before leaving the pool area.
While my sister took care of business in the department, I was able to work in the student union café/​cafeteria area. Starbucks inside the union offered the usual coffee drinks and noshes, and a few steps away was the cafeteria, where I got a personal pizza and soy milk for $ 6…whoa, these kids can really eat well.
It is probably not cool to review a school and just talk about the things that just make life a little better for students, but most of the kids in the café area were hooked into the campus wifi working on projects, or were meeting in study groups. I can only hope they feel their education is a good one. By the way, I was told Stephen King went here?
