History

Established in 2006.

Calligraphy is my passion. After 40 years of loving, hating, contemplating and creating letters, I can look back and say with confidence that they have held my attention for most of my life and show no sign of letting go! I returned to Cape Cod in 2006 after an exciting career in Washington, DC, beginning as an apprentice calligrapher and culminating in my service as chief calligrapher of the White House for both President Clinton and President Bush (43!). Having spent many years in the world of diplomatic and official entertaining, I now find myself re-approaching an old challenge — how to create calligraphy as an expressive artist. While I very much relish working on events such as weddings, dinners, and ceremonies, I am currently steeped in the process of finding a visually expressive voice in the words that I write and the letters that I create. Please continue to visit my site and my blog as the process unfolds!

Meet the Business Owner

Rick P.

Business Owner

Rick Paulus purchased his first calligraphy pen and bottle of ink on his 12th birthday, thus beginning his appreciation for beautifully formed letters and his extraordinary career. In 1990, after sufficient practice, his calligraphy skills were recognized by our government and he became Engrosser of the U.S. Department of State, where he helped to set the stage for diplomacy for eight years under four secretaries of state. In 1998, Rick was called to the White House and served as Chief Calligrapher for President Bill Clinton and President George W. Bush.

Today Rick continues his quest for the perfectly formed letter in his studio by the sea, Cape Lettering Arts. It is here, on the edge of the continent, that he expresses of his passion for the beauty and the strength of nature through the expressive use of letterforms. Rick’s current work focuses on the writings of environmentalists, poets and others who have written so eloquently of Cape Cod and the sea.
