Smart Energy Today, Inc

Started with a no-​pressure dinner with a good presentation. Thought these guys sounded pretty good! They came to the house, took some measurements, ignored our request to quote us for solar, and quoted us for insulation in our crawl space instead (which was also needed). That’s when the rot set in.
Then came the pressure to «DO THE WORK RIGHT NOW!!!» and not give us a couple of days (my husband was ill). The next day a bank contacted us and asked us if the work was complete and to our satisfaction, because they were about to buy the loan from Smart Energy Today! I told them they hadn’t even scheduled the work yet. A couple days later, the bank called again — Smart Energy Today had just sent them an email assuring them that the work was complete… completely untrue. I told the bank I was cancelling the contract, as I no longer trusted these guys.
When I tried to contact the salesman, he gave me an unworking phone number to contact him as well as no last name. When I called his boss’ cell phone, it just rang and rang and rang and rang… no voicemail. That is when we for sure decided to cancel the contract (the terms gave us three days, and we were still within that period). The next day, the boss, Scott, called again to schedule the work — totally forgetting that we had cancelled the contract the day before! Scott got argumentative, said we couldn’t cancel (ignoring the terms of the contract he gave us), and hung up.
I would NOT EVER EVER EVER EVER do business with this company. They need to get their act together. Sure, they have a nice product… but do they really care about the customer?
UPDATE on 2÷3÷2016:
Scott called us back to say that he had just gotten the cancellation notice from us, and that were now off the hook. However, both Scott (during this conversation) and Smart Energy Today (in their comment below) want to continue to blame the bank. While I understand that a mistake may (MAY!) have been made once, a couple days later the banker assured me that he had again then gotten a second, updated email stating that yes, in fact, now the work WAS completed. In fact, he was so disturbed and concerned by their statement that was so untrue, he stated that he was going to bring this issue up with his supervisor. Certainly I am not the only once concerned about this business practice!

Went to their free dinner and presentation. We thought it was too hard of a sell so we declined. After reading others review and the history of the company’s owner, I believe walking away was the right thing. Goggle solar attic blankets and you will see they have a R value of about 4 and once they get covered with dust (they will) they loose a lot of efficiency unless you dust them. Yeah right. Do some research before you spend your hard earned cash. Get multiple bids. Don’t feel obligated over a mediocre dinner,

I want to start this post by saying we did not purchase any products from Smart Energy Today (the reasons for which I will spell out), so this is not an assessment of their quality. It was their pricing that drove us away.
First of all, we went to their dinner and were excited about their commitment to increasing the energy efficiency of our home prior to installing solar panels. We shared with them that we are planning on outfitting our home with enough solar panels that we would no longer be relying on the electrical grid. It really seemed that our goals were aligning quite well with theirs.
We agreed to have them come out to our home and do a solar audit and share with us if our house is a good candidate for solar as well as the related costs. The sales man showed up promptly at our agreed upon time and was quite pleasant.
The majority of our conversation revolved around the Sol Blanket. This product seems like a very wise option for any home owner and the installation is very straight forward. Yet this is where they lost us; we were quoted $ 4800 for the product for the attic and crawlspace of our 1600 square foot home. The kicker is that this is just for the product with us installing it ourselves (which was our preference). I quickly jumped online and found two other companies with the same product at a significantly lower price. We can (and did) buy the same product for both the attic and crawlspace for under $ 1000. When I brought it up to our salesman, he seemed genuinely surprised at the other prices I can get the same product for through a 15 second Google search.
Then we discussed their solar powered attic fans. We were told that we would need two 30 Watt ceiling fans and that they came with a 20 year warranty. They offered them to us for $ 495 each, with us doing the install (again, our preference). As with all companies, they claimed their product was made with the highest quality of products. I again did a search and found a 30 Watt solar attic ceiling fan on Amazon for about $ 400 (shipped). This one comes with a 25 year warranty and claims to pull 1550 cubic feet per minute (Smart Energy Today’s claimed to pull 900 cubic feet per minute). In full disclosure, I haven’t done a lot of research into either companies attic fans, though I will be soon and will be making a purchase (I haven’t ruled out buying them from Smart Energy Today, yet).
As for our solar audit, we are clear that our home can do solar (we knew that already), and did get some good advice on different tax breaks we can get. However, after having to step outside for several phone calls, our salesman had to leave before giving us a quote on the solar panels or telling us how many we would need. I do know that Andalay manufactures their solar panels, and they seem to have a good reputation. However, they can be purchased on Amazon as well as at many home improvement stores.
My overall assessment of this company is that they have very well trained sales professionals and most likely sell a quality product. Yet their products are so incredibly overpriced in comparison to everything else I have been able to find. I think that their is a tremendous need for their products, and we were very excited to hear their presentation (we would have eagerly attended without the dinner included — we felt that was very kind but not necessary). I am very disappointed with the prices they are charging as well as not being any closer to having solar on our home. We will be doing solar and the insulation blankets with another company.

I attended a dinner in Port Orchard Washington last week and really enjoyed the food! The presentation was awesome and I can’t wait for the free energy audit.

On Sat. Oct. 4^th we had Insulation and the Solar Blanket added to our home. We were told that the appointment would be around 12:00 pm. The Installers called and inquired as to whether they could come earlier which was no problem. The young gentlemen were very courteous, hard working, and a joy to have in our home. We appreciated their work ethic. They worked together to get our home energy improvements complete in a timely manner. We are so excited to see the difference the improvements will make on the energy of our home. We have lived in our home since 1977 and we were overdue to have this work done. We had considered «doing it ourselves». We are really pleased that we went ahead and spent the money to have the job done professionally. The team worked efficiently, cleaned up after themselves, and provided excellent customer service. Thank you Smart Energy Today & especially Dan Hurd for an informative presentation, & professional home inspection. You were sincere, honest and lined up the perfect crew to assist us with our installation.

I wanted to touch base and let you know that we were very satisfied with the installation crew — As promised they were very courteous and efficient! They got right to work and handled meeting Bear, (My very large and anxiety ridden rescue dog) very well — They were in and out in about 2 hours leaving everything back in it’s place! It was fairly warm the day they installed the attic blanket and I do believe I could tell the difference within a short time after they completed the install. They delivered as promised with a very courteous and efficient crew — We are extremely happy with the product and the service! Highly recommend this company and it’s products!

We love the attic blanket and attic fan we got. Our house was built in the 1930’s and the attic insulation we had was just as old. Once we put the blanket in our house stayed warmer. We also love the LCD light bulbs they have they work great in the pot lights we have and they do not heat up light standard bulbs do.

.should have left it at that. 4000.00 dollars later. and a suppossed heat blanket… nottt…my floors are just as cold as they were before. its s scammm!!! did an energy audit. bunch of
BS​.so im saying… dont. do. it. …then, you have to spend a certain amount to qualify for a deferred payment schedule. course you arent told that till late in the game!!!
