Description

Specialties

Ruby’s Garden is a boutique showcasing children’s clothes made by local mom-preneurs of Oakland and the Bay Area. One aspect of our mission is supporting moms who have started creative businesses while continuing their full-time job as mothers. Buying locally is not only «green» (lower transportation costs=lower carbon footprint) but also promotes a sense of community in the shop and among shoppers. This aspect is reinforced by in-store events, often attended by our designers and their families. For more information, see our website: www.rubysgarden.com.

History

Established in 2006.

Temescal resident Mary Prince was opening a tiny flower shop (in our original space on Shattuck, across from where we are now). Longtime friend and neighbor Mae Chan Frey learned of her plans, she asked to join her with kids clothes, and a partnership was born. Two months later, on September 9, 2006, we held our Grand Opening which was filled with friends and neighbors. A year later we moved into Temescal Plaza, and now onto Telegraph.

Selling locally-produced kids clothing and gifts has given our shop a community-building atmosphere. Our designers hand-deliver their goods and attend our customer parties with their kids. Most of them are «mom – preneurs» like us, so we support each other in juggling work and family.

We’re so grateful for the opportunity to meet excellent people from the neighborhood and surrounds. We especially celebrate the many children we’ve watched grow up from newborns and toddlers into pre-schoolers and beyond.

Meet the Business Owner

Business Owner

I’m an architect /community organizer turned mommy turned shop owner. Somehow all the skills of these jobs get used as owner of Ruby’s Garden. I love having a shop in my own neighborhood and making a fun and safe place for kids and parents to play.
