I have been doing music instruction and coaching since 1997. I started teaching as a way to make money during my last year of college at UC Berkeley. I enjoyed the work a lot and decided to work on it full time.

Leonard S.

Business Owner

Leonard Sherman has been playing music ever since he was was a small boy. He started on the piano but expanded into other instruments including clarinet, saxophone, percussion, oboe, bass guitar, guitar, and voice.

He is actively involved with music, including teaching several classes at Emeryville California’s Ex’pression College.

In addition to this work, he teaches students of all levels and abilities in a wide range of instruments. One area of specialization is his focus tutoring students with special needs, such as autistic children.

He also pursues music endeavors, such as performing at weddings, private functions and various music venues in the San Francisco Bay Area. Leonard has produced music soundtracks for a World Championship Equestrian competitior and a yoga DVD.

Leonard is not only a talented musician, but a talented teacher with his easy going style providing a safe space for expression and experimentation. He adapts to my needs and always thinks of fun, new ways to stretch my musical and performance comfort zones. I feel extremely fortunate to have him as a teacher and would highly recommend him to anyone wanting to add new riffs to their repertoire, learn a new song for a special event, learn a new instrument or break through to the next level of performance. I found Leonard in my Unilocal search for a piano teacher, so it’s only fair that I give back to the Unilocal community and let everyone know that his five star rating is very well deserved.
I’ve been going to Leonard twice a week for the past few months, and my progress in piano is a clear reflection of the great instruction I’ve received. I’ve not only learned to play music through sight reading (and practice, of course), but Leonard teaches me theory along the way. He’s incredibly patient, and he makes it clear that his primary concern is that I’m making progress from week to week. It is a very comfortable environment, and despite his obvious talent and experience in music, I never feel as though he is condescending with my beginner’s skills.
I would highly recommend Leonard to anyone seeking music lessons, regardless of his or her current level of expertise.

I think Leonard is a great guy and I really enjoyed taking guitar lessons from him. I learned a lot from him, especially about theory. The guy knows how to play everything; guitar, bass, saxophone, piano, whatever. Leonard teaches at Expressions College, which I’ve only heard good things about, but I took private lessons from him at his home. My only criticism is that he could have pushed me a bit more. Having an injury to my wrist and hand, he may have been wary of exacerbating my injury. However, I would definitely recommend him.

Leonnie! What can I say? I just love this guy. One of the most gentile and easy-​going guys on the planet. He has a completely down-​to-​Earth approach to teaching and is extremely patient. He has a heart of gold and a great ear as well as wonderful technique, not only with his playing but with the way he handles people. He has a great outlook on life and knows how to make things happen. He is changing the world one note at at a time.

Leonard Sherman is like, the nicest guy! I had always been terrified of learning music theory, but he was able to help me feel more confident composing music. His instruction provided me with a valuable set of skills which have allowed me grow as a musician and audio engineer. He truly does care about his students and I would recommend him to anyone who wants to expand their musical repertoire!

Len really is as good as it gets when it comes to music instruction. Through working with Len, I was able to learn the basics in Music theory which has allowed me to grow as a musician. Len really know his stuff when it comes to diverse forms of music and can teach me pretty much any style. He is a very nice guy and really wants to see his students get better and succeed…

I started taking piano lessons from Leonard because I noticed that when Leonard is in the room, music is being played, no matter what level the student is at. That delighted me as a beginner. I could participate in playing beautiful simple music with the support of Leonard’s «accompaniment» and that feels good! Leonard is an inspiring teacher for me because he can play music for hours, with people at all different levels and he makes music fun to learn. I have a six year old daughter, who has also become interested in learning because she sees me taking lessons and because Leonard knows how to ease her into music without forcing anything. He is very encouraging and patient and lets the lesson unfold naturally. I think he is a wonderful teacher.
