Gaelic Moving & Storage

I’ve now used Gaelic Moving twice, and both times were a top notch experience. Last year they helped us pack up out of our loft and into a storage unit. Darragh had said it would take 4 – 5 hours with the three dude crew at $ 150/​hr. They were done in 3.5 hours and prorated the last hour… I had expected them to round up to 4 hours and was pleasantly surprised. That included them taking apart our king sized bed as well as moving all our furniture and boxes in the rain! They also took my very specific instructions to build around the outside of our storage unit seriously and tetrised our belongings perfectly (goal had been to consolidate our other storage unit into the second bigger one, so leave room for lots of boxes). They also gave a 5% discount for cash. Our second and most recent experience was just as great. I changed the date of our move with just a few days notice due to renovation delays in our new place, and Darragh had no problem accommodating. He texted me the morning of our move asking if I still wanted a three person crew or just two for $ 50/​less an hour. I appreciated the option but chose to go with three as they had been super fast the first time. They met me at the storage place with their now familiar truck and loaded my two storage units (never did completely get rid of that first unit) like pros with room to spare. They were accommodating and friendly once again with my questions and suggestions (putting a few oddly packed boxes in my car), assuring me there would be plenty of room for it all. Darragh pulled me aside to show me a kitchen chair that had lost a bolt, saying he could probably fix it, and I told him it had been that way going into storage – his upfront honesty was appreciated though! Once they arrived at our new place, they unloaded everything in a jif and even moved a heavy console back into our garage once we realized it was much too big for our new living room. Darragh had said they would charge a fee to drive back to Oakland but called it even at 4 hours – delightfully fast, he’d quoted me this time at 4 – 6 hours! The $ 20 for gas for the ride up to El Cerrito was no problem for me at all. Overall I’d recommend these guys anytime for a move big or small! Thanks Darragh!

As good as an experience as you can imagine/​hope for with a moving company. The prices are fair and the crew showed up on time for my move from Oakland to Dublin. As long as I’m living in the Bay Area, I would use Gaelic Moving.

I really loved these guys. They were quick, efficient, and took care with some of my more valuable pieces of furniture. They also stuck around to help me put my bed frame together since they saw I was moving alone. Darragh and his crew were very friendly and chatted with me the whole time they were moving my things. Darragh also kept a sharp eye out for some questionable characters who were seen eyeing the truck and made sure that everything made it into my new apartment.
The only deduction was that they were 3 hours late due to a dead truck battery and that communication was very difficult in the beginning. However, once they arrived, everything went smoothly and within the time frame he had originally quoted me.

Would hire these guys again in a heartbeat! I moved out of a room and into my own studio with a bed, a few small tables, a big chair, 10 boxes, and a few wardrobe boxes worth of clothes. I couldn’t accompany them to my new place because of my work schedule, so I gave them my spare keys and they did everything else. I walked into my new studio after work with all the big furniture staged. Saved me so much time and energy, they’re awesome!

Darragh and his crew are great! All the guys were pleasant, worked hard, and made sure to do things right.
I’ve got a lot of antique furniture and collectables and after I told Darragh about the pieces, it was clear I could depend on him.
I’m super grateful of how quick they are too! I scheduled the move bright and early and the crew showed up on time and when I told them the cleaners were coming in a few hours, they (without me even asking) hustled and got everything packed up way before the cleaners showed up.
These guys move quickly without compromising my furniture, cheap with a clear and honest rate, and flexible when my schedule is all over the place.

Great experience with Sean, Scott and Ray today. Showed up when we were expecting them. Did a professional job getting us packed up and out of our house.

These guys helped me move a couple of months ago. In short, here are the pros and cons that I experienced:
Pros: they were pretty easy to schedule with, easy to communicate with and get in touch with before the move; the price was the lowest I found at the time; they were fast, efficient and good at maneuvering the large truck on my narrow street
Cons: they were not very careful with some of my things — several important furniture items and walls/​door frames were damaged due to careless handling; I didn’t get even the slightest apology for the damages caused, even after confronting them about it
Conclusion: I wouldn’t personally use their services again, but I can see that maybe if they were less tired or hadn’t just done a large move before mine, they would probably be pretty good at their work.

I’d give them 4.5 stars if I could. I’m only deducting a bit because I had trouble communicating with Darragh in the beginning. I’m chalking it up to Mercury in retrograde, and because he and his team had just worked 12 days straight (!!).
Mike and Sean showed up really late on the day of my move because the job before me turned out to be much bigger and more complicated than they expected it to be/​were led to believe. I didn’t mind because it gave me more time to pack, and it’s not like I was left wondering — Darragh called me to give me the heads up and Sean called/​texted as well with regular updates about his and Mike’s ETA.
When Mike and Sean arrived (at around 6) they were total sweethearts. Treated my stuff with care, were very personable, friendly, and didn’t show any signs of strain from having worked a full day already. They wrapped up my mirror and screen with a quilt, saran wrapped my wooden desk. They were gentle with my stuff, which I appreciated. The whole process was smooth. Perhaps the easiest, smoothest move I’ve ever experienced.
Yeah, there were some snafus, but not with the actual moving of my things, and to me that’s what matters the most. I highly recommend Gaelic Moving and would use them again (and probably will considering how often I move). Plus, the Unilocal deal doesn’t hurt!

I meant to write this a year ago, but just remembered as I was referring a friend. I DID use Gaelic again for our move into our new home (SF to Oakland) and it was great. They were fast, efficient and just as friendly as always. I had a small baby with me and they took care of all the moving so all I had to do was watch. Thanks, Darragh!

I was looking for movers with relatively short notice this weekend, and went with Gaelic based on all the positive Unilocal reviews. The Unilocal deal didn’t hurt either. I’m glad I did! Darragh and Scott were super friendly and loaded/​unloaded all of my things quickly and carefully. I’d recommend these guys to anyone and will definitely use them again the next time I move. This was my first experience hiring movers and boy am I glad we did. I was shocked to realize how much stuff we had in our 800 square foot house and Gaelic moved it all like a champ. We had to move unexpectedly and had only a few days to arrange the movers — Gaelic was able to book us on short notice, and most other movers we called were booked up solid for the next two weeks. My biggest bit of feedback is that these are nice folks who I felt comfortable having in my home. They were super sweet to our old cat and kept high spirits even as the sun set and there was still a whole truck to unload. Thank you!

Really nice guys! They efficiently moved everything I wanted moved, took a lot of care of my stuff, and were good at problem solving. Pretty much everything I needed for the move.

18 months later, we are moving again.
Honestly, I wouldn’t trust anyone else with our furniture. Darragh and his team treat it like their own. And just like last time, the execution of the entire move was flawless. They arrived on time-​ish (considering the traffic on a Friday morning), picked up everything extremely quickly, and unloaded everything at least as quickly.
I am pleasantly surprised that their amazing service hasn’t changed during the last 18 months. Hire these guys if you need quick, helpful, and really pleasant movers!

On a coworker’s recommendation, I hired Gaelic to complete a move this past Friday and I’ve been raving about them all weekend.
Communication was timely, and to the point. I scheduled with Darragh via email. He checked in a few days before to confirm our start, and called 15 minutes before arrival.
As requested, a two man team (Darragh and Joel) completed the move– a downtown loft apartment with 6 years worth of stuff, mostly on loft level. They were fast, efficient and careful… and came with their own supplies (dolly, blankets, shrink-​wrap, tape). They even took care to return a handful of change that had dropped from a drawer I should have emptied prior to move day.
Price point was standard, and rates straightforward.
Attitude was amazing. Both Darragh and Joel are incredibly nice, really down to earth guys, while still maintaining an honorable level of professionalism. I was ribbing Joel a bit as he smiled every time he walked through the door. Do you smile when you carry things? Because I know that I don’t!
I highly recommend their services, and will book them again for my next move.

I used Gaelic moving in April to move across San Francisco.
Overall, you have to love their fixed cost pricing. All you pay for is their time from when they arrive at point A, to when they leave point B. That’s a rarity, none of this «$ 20 surcharge for every flight of stairs» that I’ve seen before, and I love it.
They’re also reasonable people, which proved to be very important.

Darragh (the owner) is great talking over email, real friendly guy. We got the appointment set up, good to go.
Day of move arrives, and truck arrives an hour late with some proactive communication but no apology. That’s better than not showing up at all, but still annoying. Additionally, 3 guys show up instead of the 2 guys I ordered.
I got mad, and the foreman started getting mad back at me because he had no idea there was only supposed to be 2 guys (and doesn’t have the greatest people skills). There apparently wasn’t enough communication between the person who sets up the appointments (Darragh) and the teams (unless Darragh also happens to be on the team). So make sure you clarify whether that will be the case when you book. In fact, get all of the details you discuss with Darragh in writing and print it out for the crew so they’re on same page.
I tried calling Darragh, and no success. The foreman calls Darragh, and gets through. Darragh apologizes for mixup and offers to include the 3^rd guy for free. This was great to hear, but he was doing the work and getting overall job done more quickly, so I ended up deciding to pay for him.
Finally, throughout I felt like I was the only one hustling. Not to say that the team was going slow, but I didn’t get a sense that my time was their top concern. I wanted to go as quickly as possible, but the foreman would keep saying things like «oh you can help out as much as you want, or we can take care of it all». No, I want to get done ASAP, so tell me how we get this job done ASAP.

Overall I’d say their heart is in the right place, which is missing from most businesses out there (especially in moving industry), hence why they probably have so many 5 star reviews. Relatively, they’re amazing.
But there were too many operational hiccups (communication between Darragh & team, communication /​people skills of foreman, Laissez-​faire attitude to showing up on time, lack of hustle, etc) that prevent me from giving them a high rating. This is all fixable and I hope they do so in the future to become truly awesome.

We hired Darragh + his crew of 3 guys for an EPIC MOVE: 7 roommates, 5 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a full kitchen and large living room. and we were moving into TWO DIFFERENT LOCATIONS. Some of us are borderline hoarders, so our apartment was a warzone when they arrived. There were piles of junk around the house and several half-​packed or badly-​packed boxes. This was not an easy move, but they took a deep breath and got right to work. The entire move took 9 hours, which I thought was very impressive (incl. lots of packing, and drive times to both locations; excl. 1-​hour lunch break)
Darragh was a great lead and communicator. After surveying the apartment he ran his game plan by me before getting to work. Roughly 2 hours into the move, he spoke up as soon he thought they might need an extra hour or two. (I’d say we still came within very reasonable limits of the quote). In general, no one hesitated to ask us questions if anything was the *slightest* bit unclear.
Other plus-​es
+ Came by to the house to do an in-​person survey for the estimate/​quote.
+ Hourly price I was quoted is lower than other companies rated between 4.5−5 stars on Unilocal.
+ Darragh was super upfront about the few minutes he had to spend looking for a misplaced key truck, and actually took labor time off of the final bill.
+ They were available to move on a Sunday morning, other movers I called didn’t.
+ Post-​move, Darragh took extra (unbilled) time to walk me through the division of labor /​effort so I could fairly divvy up costs between the 7 roommates, each of us had varying amounts of stuff to pack and move.
+ Everyone was friendly and had a great sense of humor, even though WE were all stressed out and they were working from 9:30AM til roughly 7PM. On a Sunday. This great attitude made the move less painful.
+ OF COURSE NOTHING WAS DAMAGED!
Reliable, honest and people I’d actually hang out with — I wouldn’t hire anyone else!
