Lina H.

Business Owner

Lina Ochoa Hunter, was born in Colombia, South America. She graduated from dental school in 1996 and practiced dentistry for 11 years. For as long as she could remember she wanted to be a Pastry Chef, baking cakes, cookies and chocolates for all school and family events. She has studied with the BEST confectionery artist’s like Colette Peters, Scott Clark Woolley and Notter school of pastry arts.

Now that her life has changed since the birth of her children, Ilana and Sebastian, she has decided to stop working in the Dental field and become a confectionery artist and a dedicated Mom and Wife.

Using only the finest ingredients, she has mastered taste and appearance, in a fun colorful way.

Lina will provide freshness, flavor and exquisite design for your next event.

My experience with Cakes by designs was unfortunately not great. I asked for a cake to feed 20+ adults and was assured that I would get an appropriate size cake. This was for a 90th bday party and guests were flying from out of state. The cake was barely enough for 8 adults. I was shocked at pick up time and had no idea what I was going to do. I was told by owner that she had cupcakes I could give to the kids. However there were only 3 kids! Also I was charged for the cupcakes. It was a first and last experience for this business.

I cannot say enough good things about Cakes by Design! This is the third year that I’ve ordered treats from there for my daughters’ spring birthdays. Over the years, Lina has made us 3 gorgeous (and delicious!) cakes, strawberry-​shaped cake pops, decorated cookies, and delicious gluten-​, dairy-​, nut-​free cupcakes for guests with allergies. This year’s cake was a 2-​tier Rainbow My Little Pony Cake that took my breath away – I couldn’t help but hug Lina, the owner, when I picked it up! It was beautiful; she is truly an artist. My daughter loved it, and party guests kept asking me where I got this amazing cake. The ordering experience was great too. Lina responded to my phone call the same day I left my initial voicemail. I emailed her some images that had inspired me and she invited me into the shop to discuss. She gave me many different suggestions and options, and even offered a cake-​topper option that lowered the price considerably. Cakes by Design Edible Art has earned my repeat business, as we will definitely order from them again!

Wife ordered a second cake and much like the first, the cake and service was not ideal. Owner, please drop the attitude — get better with your customer service cause your product has potential but your service pretty much kills it.

You’ve done it again and I want to thank you SO much for your lovely work of art with all the wonderful cakes I’ve ordered these past few years! I’ve been ordering cakes from here for 3 years already– once a year — this time I called Cakes by edible to create a cake for my husband 27th birthday. I emailed the order form at 1am on a Sunday night (so Monday) asking if it’s possible they can do a cake (with a photo of the topper) that feeds 8 people on Saturday. She called me the next day and left a voicemail. I called her back to talk about the cake. I specifically told her I want a charmander cake with a tail that is able to «light up» (a candle). She asked if I wanted it to be edible and what not. But anyways, she said she can definitely do that. I was excited! I also told her I’m not sure what I want on the cake because I didn’t want it to be too plain and looks too kiddish because my husband is 27 not 13 lol. So she said she will try her best and look for ideas because it is a Pokemon cake. I drove from Dorchester to Andover on a Saturday morning to pick up my cake, as soon as I seen the cake, I was just so shocked. I swear, every cake she has made for me with MY very little details had turned out amazing!!! The price range has not change at all. Everything is still at a reasonable price!

My husband surprised me with a Louboutin cake and it was so beautiful I did not want to eat it. Everybody at dinner was excited to try the red velvet masterpiece but I can’t find it in my heart to cut into it. I added a picture on the website. Thanks Lina :)

Cakes By Design made us the most wonderful cake for our winter wedding. I saw a photo in a magazine and Lena was able to create this work of art for our special day. We were able to go in for a tasting and were presented with several cupcake examples to choose from. I am really not even a cake lover but the vanilla cake from Cakes by Designs is truly divine. The artwork that goes into making these creations is really top notch! I would never go anywhere else in the area. I have shared this news with all of my friends!

I was throwing a 30th surprise birthday party for my husband and wanted a special cake. I called 2 other places (names not to be given here). One was on vacation for an entire week (!) and the other one basically couldn’t do what I wanted.
The drive here was the WORST part of my experience here, but everything else was fabulous. I cannot believe how the cake turned out! It was awesome, my husband was totally surprised and everyone LOVED the cake. It was awesome! I’m not sure why people had a problem with the customer service-​they were SO nice to me and SO accommodating. I would come back here again (wish they were a bit closer though!). Thanks!

Cakes by Design ROCKS! 2 years ago, Lina made a wedding cake as well as cupcakes for my wedding reception, and they were a huge hit. Ever since then, I don’t even think about going anywhere else for my baked goods — I send friends to Cakes by Design because I know they’ll be taken care of. 2 weeks ago, I threw a corporate event, and ordered 200 sugar cookies with my business’ logo on them. Not only were they on time and absolutely delicious, they were a really neat way to end the evening, and they were the talk of the party — people were taking extras home with them! In fact, they were so good that my boss just placed another personal order for his son’s college graduation party. Lina has always been a pleasure to work with — she’s courteous, fast, and the quality of what she does is unparalleled. If you’re looking for good service, go here!

Owner is not good with customers at all! I agree with the other review that her rudeness completely turned me off. Her loss!
I agree with this statement 100%: «I think that Cakes by Design ought to rethink their customer service standards given that this is an economy where you should be welcoming work and working with customers and not meeting them with rudeness. Best of luck to anyone that has the displeasure of going here, we will be looking elsewhere for our needs. »

I’m not sure about the previous posts, but if I had to do my wedding all over again, I would pick Cakes for Occasions instead of Cakes by Design. Not sure what it was – the dry interaction style, the attitude, the ‘ordinary-​ness’ of the cake, how it looked smaller than I had imagined, and not at all like the pictures I shared. No wow factor, I definitely think this is probably more a birthday cake business than wedding cake… the owner was responsible and responsive, however, and clear from the outset. I’m just convinced that bigger business with more experience can ask more pointed questions and demo better so that what you get is exactly what you wanted.
