Great brunch place to go if in the Newton area!

Just had breakfast here this morning and it was awesome. We thought we would try someplace new and I wasn’t disappointed. We got there around noon and I was worried it would be jammed but we only waited about ten minutes for a table. Great atmosphere, extensive menu. Fresh fruit served on top of the pancakes-​I had the lemon ricotta pancakes topped with blueberries and it was to die for. My friend he eggs and has which was also great. I would definitely recommend it. Although I didn’t try any, they seemed to have some pretty baller alcoholic brunch beverages

Great breakfast yesterday. Great lunch today. Generous portions. Homemade food. Will be back often. Very happy to find a new place.

Everything that I could ask for from a diner experience. Inexpensive and good diner breakfast food, friendly service that checked in with us regularly (despite how busy it was).

The place has been renovated and looks very nice. See pics. The place became very packed on Sunday morning. We even drove by Cabot’s and Cook and they weren’t as busy. The service was slow at first — no menus or sign of a waitress for a good five minutes. Afterwards, service improved and was quick and efficient. The hash, eggs (over easy), and home fries were very good. The Belgian waffle was good as well.
They serve dinner and have a bar now. Check the schedule though — I think dinner is served only some days.

My kids and I were visiting Boston for a few days recently, and we were staying in Newton. We came to this restaurant for breakfast on our first day and we loved it so much, we returned for breakfast the next day as well!
The place has a real «diner» feel (i.e., not fancy but functional, with booths and tables both, and a counter in the back with an open kitchen behind). We opted to sit at a booth at the front, where the window looking out to the street is. We were immediately struck by how friendly the waitress was, as she greeted us immediately and welcomed us in, telling us to sit wherever we liked. It appeared that most diners were regulars and they and the waitresses all knew each other. The place had an old-​worldly atmosphere, like it came from our grandparents’ era. At least, that’s how it seemed to us. Definitely not your typical big city-​like restaurant.
Anyhow, friendly atmosphere aside, it’s really all about the food, right? And man, did it deliver! First of all, the menu is really large, with a ton of selections. As I recall, they serve breakfast all day. And there are a ton of breakfast selections. On our two times here, we ordered a lot of mainstay breakfast fare: eggs (scrambled, sunnyside up, poached), fruit and yogurt and granola, bacon, hash browns, toasts, juices and teas, pancakes. Nothing fancy. But we immediately noted that the service was prompt and attentive, the portions were really generous, and the food was cooked to perfection. My poached eggs are rarely… right. These here were taken out of the boiling water at the exact right nanosecond. The scrambled and fried eggs were also perfectly cooked, not too buttery, not dry, just exactly textbook-​right cooked. The bacon, delicious and not greasy at all. Everything was terrific.
It’s rare that basic foods are cooked so perfectly, in my experience.
The prices were very reasonable, and if we were staying in town longer, we’d have returned here again for breakfast!

Found the village café on a Unilocal search for breakfast restaurants. Perfect breakfast atmosphere, family friendly and the kitchen is clean and organized. The staff is very pleasant and attentive. The food was correctly prepared and very good and not overly salty. Nice size portions with continuous refilling of our coffee. The Syrian bread is pita… asked for it warmed. It was a warm day the AC was limited, not unbearable but warm. The bathroom was untidy but plenty of towels and TP and a hook for my pocketbook.

My friend and I decided to try this place one evening based on the reviews and overall the food was slightly above average, but the staff there were so friendly despite them lacking enough workers. At the time we went, it appeared that they only had one waitress working so we had to wait a little to be served, but they were very kind and apologetic about everything so I didn’t hold that against them since it appeared they were in the process of restructuring their staff.
Met the owner and he spent some time going over the menu options and you could tell how passionate and enthusiastic he was about the food there. Take some time to get to know the staff and just enjoy your time there.

I had the breakfast their the first time when I had to take the train. The food was great. was not expensive. Service was the best. I wish more people went their. All the types of food looks so good. I go their right after church at Our lady’s, but I have to call to go, a lot of people go their after church. Great place.

Such a lovely place! The food was excellent — we loved the ricotta pancakes. Mary was a fantastic server and so much fun to talk to; she made sure we were happy and well-​fed. We’ll definitely be coming back!

What a great place. Every neighborhood should be lucky enough to have a place like this. Great fresh food, friendly staff, and casual setting. Great egg sandwiches, burgers, paninis and awesome steak fries. And, they don’t make the fatal error so many places with all that going for them so often make – they actually provide all of that at a great value!
Five stars, no doubt.

Good place for breakfast. Ten bucks for 3 eggs, bacon, toast, homefries and coffee. Cooked perfectly. Plenty of homefries, which are cooked perfectly but might be better with some flavor. Onions or paprika or something. I guess if you like ketchup or hot sauce or just salt and pepper they are fine. This place also serves lunch and dinner and has full liquor license but I’ve only been for breakfast so far…

About average I guess. My tuna or chicken salad (can’t remember) was average. Coffee was good. I’ve heard that the pancakes are very good.
Service was mixed; at times it was hard to get the waitress over (although I shouldn’t need to do that) and at other times very nice (they made a nice deal of bringing out the birthday dessert and candles that I brought).

Great food! Fast service! Friendly staff! And good price! Definitely worth the stop if you’re around.

We are from Colorado. Here for the weekend only eating at places we don’t have back home.
They were supper busy, a regular commented to such.
The service was quite friendly and our breakfast was hot and tasty.
Huge pancakes and free ketchup for your home fries.

Really good breakfast place!
My bf and I were looking for a new place for breakfast in Newton and this place was amazing!
I ordered the lox with grilled brioche instead of a bagel (awesome that it’s an option) and he ordered hash with eggs. The hash was REALLY good and I kept eating it after I finished my lox :). The staff was great and one waitress overhead me asking if there was eggs Benedict and told me that there was AND I could get it with lox… or pretty much anything. Very good to know because we will be back. My other favorite breakfast place is the friendly toast and they are definitely #2 now that I’ve been here. Also the coffee is good :).
Burgers are good. The gobbler is alright, it was too dry :(.
I’m really not a breakfast person so this place is pretty sweet. I WANT to eat breakfast now.

I’ve never so much as considered taking the time to write a Unilocal review, but our afternoon with Mary at Village Café changed that. Rolling up to the place, parking was a breeze. Don’t be turned off by the rough façade (a Ty Pennington visit wouldn’t hurt), this place is a gem.
The self-​seating contributes to the personal, family oriented feel. Be forewarned: there is a full bar, but not every table has the menu. We stopped in at noon and had great Bloody Marys, but had to order off the menu.
Despite not including the booze, the breakfast and lunch menus are not lacking for options. Both menus are diverse and expansive. We opted for breakfast food; the 3 egg omelets seem much bigger than 3 eggs and are expertly constructed. The red bliss potatoes and challah toast are outstanding as well.
Finally, I’d be remiss not to mention the overall family atmosphere. Patrons are greeted with hugs, conversations are genuine, and everybody seems happy to be there, our server Mary in particular. I’ll be coming back.

We were in town visiting a friend for 3 days, and I think we came here for breakfast twice. It was the perfect walking distance from where we were staying, and it was an awesome breakfast. I can tell you, this is where the locals eat breakfast. Friendly service, homemade hash and home fries, and we saw them delivering the bread early one morning from a local bakery. If we lived nearby I’m sure we’d walk here for breakfast at least a few times each month.

I’ve lived in Newton my entire life and I can’t believe I have only been coming here for a year. Their pancakes are absolutely amazing. They are huge and fluffy. Can’t get better than that! Unfortunately I couldn’t finish it. I got the short stack, which is only two pancakes. Seeing such great food go to a waste is such a shame. I tried their corned beef hash today and it was so good. Definitely get it when you come here.
The staff is super friendly too! There is this lady in her 70s I think who keeps checking up on us. She is absolutely adorable and friendly. I couldn’t have asked for better service.
