Swartz True Value

I was in and out in about 8 minutes with everything I needed. Specifically, I needed to have copies of some keys made. I tried to get the keys done at Home Depot, but the did not work. I took to Unilocal to find a place where the employees were said to be experienced and knowledgeable. Turns out Unilocal was right. A nice young man was able to cut the keys for me and they worked perfectly! I will definitely go back next time I need a hardware store!
There is plenty of street parking and a lot nearby.

If I could give zero stars bases on today’s experience, I would. I called earlier in the day to inquire about a product and was placed on hold only to be repeatedly picked up again and asked the same questions. Eventually, after 10 minutes, I hung up. I came in, hours later, looking for the product again. A guy who works there went to go look it up in the system. (The product’s website stated all ACE stores carry it). Ten minutes later, I’m still standing in the aisle waiting for him to come back. I grab a few other needed items and go stand in the 6 person deep check out line. The clerk says the people in Paint can check me out. I head down there, and there’s my guy working with another customer. Someone is in front of me, so I’m in another long line just waiting (without the item I can in for). I decide I’m done and I’ll go to another Hardware store that has clerks that actually HELP their customers. This was the worst service I have ever received. I won’t be coming back.

Stopped in yesterday to buy a wet dry vacuum and a few other thing, great service and had just what I needed. Price was also similar to the «big box» store down the street.

Great store, great selection of products, paint, and everything you could possible want from your local hardware and paint store.
Wonderful help, can’t say enough good things about everyone who has ever waited on me. This store is clean, well managed, and a pleasure to business there.

I am not crafty or handy in the least, but these guys always make me feel like I am because of how knowledgeable and friendly they are! Every time I come in, I’m greeted by a welcoming smile and helpful advice. Love them!

This place is awesome, straight out of the Andy Griffith show. It’s your classic mom and pop hardware store that manages to carry everything you could possibly need in a space ¹⁄₁₀ the size of a warehouse mega store. And, they carry many items that the big guys do not such as specific tool heads/​hand tools and specialty bits/​fittings. They also have two aisles of fasteners and related odds and ends that you cant find anywhere else. Perfect for finding that weird thingamajig you need to replace. Very useful and even a fun place to poke around if you have a project in mind. helpful staff as well. Old school place and a hidden gem, and it eve smells old-​school-​in a good way.

Great local people who work here always very helpful and they always have what you need.

Terrific and helpful place. Its a wonderful business to have in the neighborhood with excellent customer service. If you are looking for any small part they will help you find it and explain how to use/​install etc.
I am a long term customer. The other day I brought in a cappuccino maker and wanted to get a plug to replace the damaged plug. Mike rewired the plug for me as I waited and only charged for the the part. Where else could you get such good service?

OK This review is based on past experience but I realized I should have reviewed Swartz before, and now that I’ve moved I MISS them so much.
This hardware store is the old school crowded, multi-​roomed, small old school hardware store that has mostly dissipated because of the giant box stores.
You walk in and almost right away someone offers to help. This usually begins the conversation of «I was thinking of doing X». The bright, knowledgeable friendly hardware store guy starts asking questions about your project. Do you want it to come out like this or this. is it wood or plastic… do you need to strip that first… What gauge is it… etc etc.
The talking goes on as he leads you to the right area and begins suggesting products… and gives tips and when you leave you have everything you need to do the job. And if you run out, they are around the block so no big deal.
The only thing I would suggest is more evening hours (for us after work fixers) and Sundays since that’s the day I get most stuff done.

Wouldve been a 5 of 5 before this morning… but probably at a 4.5, not 4.
I really like this place and loved them until this morning where my feelings of them were changed just a little bit because of someone in the paint department named Marshall. I was in a few times for mistakes made by another person who mixed our paint and he basically told me I would have to come back when the person who helped me was working to correct the issues… this is not a customer service answer… I didn’t make the mistake and it was the person who was working, so the answer should not be that I would need to come back… BUT, LeAnn was absolutely amazing when I came back a little later with another issue and she did change out the order so I could finish what was needed. :)
Pretty nice selection here, though, and everyone else I have dealt with here has been great and helpful. I will continue to come here but my feeling was just a little tainted by the above person. LeAnn helped with my mood, though! :) :)

Swartzy’s! That is what the locals call it – been coming her for over 20 years. It does not get any better than this place. This is, and always will be my first stop for home/​hardware supplies. Family owned and run. Support your «#small business» and «#local business» folks!

What sells this place are the helpful staff who work there. It’s a hole in the wall but it has everything at a good price.

Awesome awesome awesome! Went in there trying to build something for my closet, mind you ive never built anything or used any tools lol. I don’t remember the guys name who helped me but if I ever need anything i’ll look for him. He had dark hair and a heavy spanish accent look for him! He greeted me with a smile the second I step foot in the store. Going into a hardware store is always awkward for me… not my ideal shopping experience. He explained everything to me and made it so easy!!! I’ve never felt so handy. I will deffinately be going back for my next project :-)

This place is the best. The help/​staff there are really great, intelligent, and helpful people. I have been going there for years, even driving out of my way to go there. A really down to earth store, that is easy to navigate and easy to shop at. I’d say this is the ideal hardware store, its small, friendly and the prices aren’t outrageous. I can’t recommend this enough. Thank you guys!

I have been a customer at Swartz’s hardware store for many years. The individual and personal attention that is given to you is the Best! It all start’s with the wonderful owner Michael, who, on many occassions, has looked in his cache of old brass screws etc, to help me complete an Antique frame for re-​sale. He believes in old-​fashioned service, which is carried through to all who work in this wonderful hardware store.
It has been a mainstay in Nonantum, in the same family for 50 + years .They are definitley doing something right.
Forget the big hardware stores, Swartz’s gives you something that you can’t find and that is wonderful individual help, even it’s for a 10 cent nail.

Seriously, these guys are great, so helpful! Not at all like Home Depot where you’ll walk around for 20 minutes trying to find someone to just direct you, much less actually provide a consultation, only to get some surly overworked person who’s covering approximately a half acre of store sections and has a line of customers waiting for help. The guy working the cash register at Swartz helped me carry my paint out to the car, and at one point I was talking to three very helpful guys about the merits of tacks or adhesive for applying stair treads. I’m home-​improvement challenged, so the help I get at the store goes a long way.
Swartz doesn’t have everything, but what they have is carefully selected to cover pretty much anything you need from a hardware store. I’ve found things here I couldn’t find at Home Depot — and not just the Benjamin Moore paint, which is way better than Behr. Maybe it just feels like I find what I’m looking for more often because you don’t have to search over a half-​mile radius to locate what you came for!
Good selection of stuff, super-​helpful and knowledgeable staff, reasonable prices — try this place out and you won’t go to HD again except to fill in the gaps with those few things that Swartz doesn’t stock.

This store is diagonally across from Newton Jazzercise, so most Saturday mornings I consider stopping in. Almost always, I find what I need. This Saturday it was a battery tester, previously cleaning supplies, a carpet knife and garden tools. They pull all the gardening stuff out on the sidewalk in front of the store (which is why I bought a rake this year). I love to shop locally, and agree with all the reviewers who have described the helpful staff in this store.

Swartz Hardware amazingly has it all. Every single team member here is friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. They do a bunch of stuff that is unheard of in other hardware stores. Things like fix window screens in two days, make keys that work every time, carry heavy stuff out to your car, provide home delivery, assemble a grill on no notice, and they all do it with a smile.
In the paint department Marshall, Mike and the tall guy are really super über knowledgeable about all the choices of finishes. The difference between California Paint and Ben Moore for porches and horizontal outdoor surfaces.
They have a third eye for seasonal stuff. They also seem to stock stuff like ice melt before the storm hits. And oh yes they are able to order one of a kind stuff and actually call you when it comes in.
I recently learned that Mike Swartz is an institution in Newton. I think he is the oldest living business person in Newton who is an original owner of a retail business. His father stated Swartz Hardware some time around 1890.

If these people told me to first paint my whole body then hurl myself at a wall in order to paint it, I would. The paint dept. is truly knowledgeable and they have all the Benjamin Moore paints (Ben, Aura, Regal).
