Island Paddleboard’s location is the best for paddling in Orange County! We launch from Balboa Island. No matter what the wind is doing, we always have calm, protected water in which to paddle. We are nearest the front of the harbor with better scenery, more wildlife, and more hidden coves and channels to explore!

Our boards are NSP E2 or Surftech Universals. These epoxy boards are the steadiest on the market, yet still super maneuverable providing a fun paddle experience! Our boards are buoyant enough to carry a large adult and a child together (Don’t try that with a typical rental board).

Our family style service is legendary. We have been in business in the same location since 1960! We were the first in the area to rent paddleboards. We can accommodate really large groups!

While many first time paddlers learn the sport themselves, we also offer stand up paddleboard lessons. If some in your group would rather sit while they paddle, we rent kayaks too!

Island Paddle Board is located conveniently on Balboa Island surrounded by the calm water of Newport Harbor & easy beach access.

Rentals are available everyday 10−6pm or by reservation only.

Want to take a Lesson? No matter what your level of experience or fitness is, our instructors will have you comfortable on the board and paddling by the end of your hour lesson.

All rentals come with 11’6″ super stable paddle board, paddle, flotation device & wheeled racks to make transportation easy!

We rented paddle boards here the first week of September, and the staff was fantastic! They were so helpful and the guy who showed us what to do was very thorough. The paddleboards were in great condition, and it was a beautiful trip around Balboa Island! I would totally recommend this to anyone who wants to have a relaxing morning!

I came here with my friends during Labor Day weekend and it was such a fun and relaxing experience. Being a holiday weekend I wanted a reservation and most of the SUP places around were first-​come first-​serve. Luckily, these guys took reservations. However, the person I spoke with on the phone did not mention anything about needing a deposit so I was under the impression that we had a reservation but when we arrived they told me that I had not been saved. I wasn’t happy about that because it was my friends birthday but everything worked out and we were still able to get boards. I liked that they have a place to keep your belongings while you’re out on the water and you don’t even have to carry the board or anything, you just walk right down to the harbor and get on a board and you’re good to go! The staff was very friendly and helpful and despite it being everyone in our groups first time doing SUP, we were able to get the hang of it without any lessons. I would definitely do it again!

Holy mother of paddle boarding!!! This place was sooo much fun!!! This is probably the best location for paddle boarding. Why you ask?! Because it is! You will understand when you do it (which you will).
First, customer service here is fantastic. The ladies at the store were so kind to us. They talked us through the process and just made us feel so comfortable. Aaaaannnnnd, the guy that brought our boards to the water gave us some nice pointers (my gf was a beginner so she needed it BAD) lol
Second, going around balboa island was so fun. The water was really calm and the views of the boats and houses were really nice. (Also reminded me of how poor I am compared to these people ;(hahaha) we did the 2 hour SUP and that was perfect to go all the way around.
Third, we saw a sea lion sleeping on a tiny sailboat. Cherry on top or what?!
Fourth, I have also tried Newport Fun Tours and this place was way better. A little more pricey but worth it. The paddles and board were also waaaay better and more stable. Perfect for all levels.

Fun on demand! We were a huge group that they accommodated with good humor, with kayaks and paddle boards. Nice folks. It took a little bit to get waivers signed and such, but once we were out, all was good. Owner had a smile for us and got us out on the water. Water was perfect, everyone in our group had a great time. It’s a fun experience to be out in the harbor with soooo many other paddle boarders. They only downside was they only had the orange flimsy pfds, which I suppose is ok since most people eschew them, and don’t wear them, but an improvement would be to have more serious pfds (the kind you zipper up) available for people who aren’t as water comfortable. All in all, and excellent, fun and happy way to spend a day in Newport/​balboa. Great for groups. Highly recommend! Do it, you will love it.

Easy to rent and easy entry in the water with a quick walk down the street. Not cheap, but simple and both my 8 yr old and 10 yr old had a blast. Just remember your are paying for not having to shlep the boards around. Nice people and SUPs and paddles are in good shape!

I went here for my birthday with 3 close friends, and we all rented boards for an hour and a half (Pam’s Special).
Great customer service, the guy that helped us with our boards was very sweet. He did all the heavy lifting, and made sure we all knew what to do and where to go.
The only downside is kind of a give in if you know the area: PARKING SUCKS. Balboa island is notorious for this, so be prepared to walk a little bit.
Overall a great experience, would definitely come back!

Since this was my first experience paddle boarding, I was super nervous before I arrived at Island Paddle Board. It’s located on Balboa Island on the main street, right across from Starbucks. We got paper work done and got everything set up and then headed to the docks to get started.
Because I had mentioned that it was my first time, I had expected to get some help on how to use the paddle and where to sit on the board etc., but the guy who set us up just left after he saw that we were on the boards. My inexperience got us in quite a bit of trouble with neighboring kayakers, who commented that Island Paddle Board should have given us a few pointers or at least helped us get started.
Overall, the experience was super fun despite me falling in twice and losing my Ray-​Bans (RIP). It was a really sunny day out and it was relatively uncrowded, so it wasn’t difficult to navigate the waters. I would recommend getting a waterproof phone case if you plan on bringing your phone out, and also something to attach your sunglasses to. Balboa Island is super beautiful and we took some great pictures despite being a little wobbly on the boards. I would definitely come back now that I’ve gotten the hang of it, but I would advise to new paddle boarders to ask for some instruction.

Did this Saturday for my boyfriends birthday and we had a blast. The service was absolutely incredible. Right on balboa island in a shop. (They sell gorgeous bathing suits in the shop too)
Called ahead to make a reservation, phone call was quick and efficient. Showed up about 10 minutes early and they graciously got everything done for us. Then you walk down and two very friendly and helpful guys carry you board down and get you set up on the water. Overall the service was just amazing. Everyone was more than willing to offer advice and knowledge. And was gracious and kind doing so.
The paddle boarding experience is beautiful. So fun to paddle around the harbor and look at all the gorgeous homes and boats. The water is very calm and easy for beginners (like my boyfriends was) but he ended up being better than me even though I had been once already.
After you can walk around the island and look at all the stores or grab a delicious meal!
Overall, I cannot wait to go back again! Wouldn’t go anywhere else

Close to the shore and we had tons of fun! You can keep your items there at no extra charge, they provide you with a board, paddle, and a life jacket if needed. We went out for 2 hours and it great and a good amount of time. I recommend reserving ahead of time we arrived the day of to reserve it was on a Sunday, got there at 1 and next available for 4 people was 3. Super fun!

–the woman who helped us at the front assumed that since my family and I looked foreign and had an accent, we did not know how to read English well. Her excuse for asking us that was because «not everyone knows how to read legal documents». Firstly, my father writes legal documents. Secondly, it is beyond insulting to assume that a person does not read English well just because of looks and an accent. If you’re working with tourists, you don’t insult them. If they have questions, they’ll ask.
When I said this to the woman, she kindly accepted my honesty which was nice of her.
If this happens to you, please speak up. I know that this woman did not mean to insult us, but it was very insulting and the more it’s mentioned, the less others will feel insulted.

First time stand up paddle boarding and I had a wonderful experience. Everybody was very friendly on the phone and in person. Alex was my instructor and he was awesome! I learned all the tricks and also learned about the area and the islands. I highly recommend. It’s a full service place so they will put the boards in the water for you and all you need to do is have fun. Now that I know I can do it on my own I plan to go back regularly.
