The Allison Inn & Spa

I wanted to take my sister out for her birthday and asked her where she would like to go. She said that Jory’s was a favorite of hers. We had a delicious lunch and cocktails. The service is exceptional and the dining room is pretty spectacular. We have discussed going back for spa services!

I really loved my experience there. It looks larger than expected from the outside but it’s got a really nice and quaint, quiet feel inside. The service is top notch. The ambiance is upscale but not pretentious.
The rooms are all quite large. We had the terrace level room (I think the cheapest) and it was still quite large. I believe all have fireplaces. Ours had a window nook with a blanket. Each room has a Bose radio/​iPod player. There were 2 sinks with a nice soaking tub. The mini bar sink has triple filtered water that you can drink. There were 2 glass bottles in the fridge with chilled water. The room comes with some free snack tray. Kettle chips, apple chips, and 2 organic energy bars.
The wifi is free and better than most hotels. Ranging from 6 – 13 mbs down and 2 – 10 upload during my 24 hours there. Just a note, our room on the terrace level got terrible cell (Verizon) coverage. It was fine on the top floor. If you need to make a lot of phone calls on your cell, pay extra and get a room on a higher level floor.
The spa was probably my wife’s favorite part. Maybe because it was mid-​week but there were hardly people around. It felt so nice and private. Hotel guests can use the spa facilities. I love the eucalyptus steam spa. There is a separate mens/​womens lounge and also a co-​ed area. Nice lounge chairs with various Smith teas and ice water.
The gym is nice and new but somewhat limited. There are 2 genesis machines but I like the good old bar I can do pull-​ups on. There is no TV in there, but the treadmills/​ellipticals/​bikes have TV screens on them. But only 5 channels. ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, and CW.
Last thing I should mention is that the service is top-​notch. It seems like that is what you are paying for as the room prices are not cheap.
The infinity pool and jacuzzi look really nice, didn’t try it.
It’s also nice that it’s only 30 – 40 minutes from Portland.
There’s not much else to do out in Newburg other than to chill, relax, spa, and go wine tasting.

Ok this place is beautiful and romantic and had wonderful amenities and the only thing that takes it down a notch is that the employees were too young! Seriously when you pay a lot of money to stay at a fancy Inn you want the service to be from people who are older. The employees there are like 20. Even the waiters. It makes it seem less posh when the employees look like teenagers,

Nice architecture but mediocre service in our experience.
Our group was pressed to an early dinner time to accommodate a large party. We cooperated, there was no large party and we were never told or given any other option. We left a nearly empty restaurant at 8:00.
We had difficulty getting even 30 minute checkout flexibility to work with the spa service schedule.
The staff did not appear to be well trained or empowered in customer service.
We love Oregon wine country but do not plan a return visit to The Allison.

My favorite getaway is Allison Resort Spa! For the first time out of many visits I decided to get a manicure. I usually do a massage or facial. I assumed I would have the option of Shellac or regular polish. I did not know I had to schedule for Shellac. So I had the option of a manicure or Shellac since we did not have the «TIME» to do both. I went with the manicure. Everything was very fast paced and I felt rushed. I did not feel like the best interest was in my needs. I felt like it was in speed. The setup is beautiful. The products are wonderful but limited. The staffs was polite but very distant and a little distracted. I was dissatisfied with my manicure and left feeling like it was a waste of a lot of money and I could do a MUCH better job myself. The paint job was very poor and I saw imperfections immediately. I feel like the time to appointments need to be extended and maybe adding more stations if there are so many clients. Rushing through such expensive and short appointments only results in pressure and failure.

My husband and I went for a little weekend away before our baby arrived and had such a nice time we did not want to leave! Every detail is considered, from the rooms to the spa to the pool to the food. The service was exceptional, everyone we interacted with was very professional. All around excellent experience.

This review is *only* about the spa.
I was given a graduation present of a facial (which was wonderful) and a massage in July. (This review was delayed because I have been busy taking national board exams.) The massage was terrible. The LMT did very deep tissue (which I asked for) with way too much oil (which is *not* how to do deep tissue). All of my ribs were extremely sore for several days, from where he had gone too quickly over my back with too much oil and too much depth.
Also, he stretched my neck in rotation, then when I said, «that’s too much,» he said, «Oh, it’s too much?» and *stretched it even more.* I said «That’s very uncomfortable, please stop.» I never should have had to get to that point — he should have stopped as soon as I said it was too much, and instead, he stretched me beyond the point of pain. My neck was much more sore the next day, and continued to hurt for several weeks.
The scalp massage (add-​on service) was also terribly uncomfortable. He pulled my hair (too hard) and played with it a lot but didn’t actually massage my scalp — barely even touched it. It was more of a hair massage than a scalp treatment. It hurt and was stressful.
The room was very cold the whole time. The therapist started washing the sink area, the hot rocks, and who-​knows-​what *before* my full time was up. I don’t think I should have to pay for clean-​up. I also didn’t get the drink that was included with the service until I asked in the lounge, after waiting quite a while.
To make matters worse, when I came out, the woman working in the reception area didn’t ask me how my service was. This is unusual at such a supposedly high-​class establishment. So I told her what had happened, and she literally did not respond. I kept talking through my shock that she was just blankly staring through me, and eventually another woman came in, overheard me, and asked for more details. She invited me to fill out a comment card, saying that someone would contact me about the complaint, so I filled one out, in great detail. (While I did so, she asked every other client who emerged from the spa how their experience had been, unlike the first woman.)
She removed the scalp massage charge from my bill, which I appreciated, but I was extremely disappointed that no further action was taken. I was never contacted by a manager, nor was I offered a refund for the entire 90 minute expensive, unprofessional, painful, and harmful massage, nor an invitation to return for a complimentary service. Nor even an apology, for that matter. Terrible way to run a business.
I have been a massage therapist for 19 years, specializing in deep tissue, sports injury rehab, and other traumatic injuries. I also worked in a few spas. There is no excuse for this man’s negligence and sloppiness, and it’s appalling that the Allison can’t find more competent LMTs, nor practice customer service at a level that it’s luxurious setting and price point command.

The Allison Inn is exceptional in every way. While it would be par for the course in the Napa area, it’s one of a kind in the Willamette valley wine region.
First, the service is outstanding from valet to room service to restaurant. Friendly, responsive, helpful, attentive.
The location is stunning and the hotel décor is beautiful. Lots of hard wood, art & scuplture, high quality furniture. You can view amazing sunsets from the room balconies.
Room service was great and can deliver gorgeous Pinot Noir ²⁴⁄₇ :)
The hotel restaurant Jory is excellent for both dinner and breakfast. Definitely sit outside if weather permits.
I did not use the spa but it looked amazing and I will definitely try it next time.
My only complaint is that the Inn is just a mile outside of town and not as deep into wine country as I would have expected. However, it still feels a world away and is very serene.

This is by far the best resort we have ever stayed in. They offer service is incredible, recommendations on restaurants and wineries is spot on. The little touches like free snacks and water at the bedside every night is so nice to have — and so unusual. The grounds are beautiful, restaurant is spectacular and I love the garden. The spa is beautiful too!

The Inn hardly needs another five star review, but we could not resist. We had a significant comparison of what a top notch resort should be. Recently we stayed at the fabled Broadmoor Resort in Colorado Springs. We were «nickel-​and-​dimed» at every turn, the staff was uncomfortably hovering. In contrast the Allison Inn has a gracious non obtrusive staff, incredible modern and first class construction, complimentary amenities beyond expectation, beautifully appointed rooms and common areas. The Jory restaurant is outstabding; the presentation of every dish is a work of art and the food is excellent. It appears their motto is never to say «no».
We arrived home a few hours ago and immediately decided to make a reservation for Thanksgiving.

This place is absolutely gorgeous. I was here for a work event, and was really impressed with the service, the food, the grounds, the rooms, everything! I only had a double queen bed, so I wasn’t expecting much when I arrived at my room, but holy smokes — it was massive! All of the rooms have a little patio, fireplace, and blackout shades. They also have a little complimentary basked of goodies for you to enjoy when you first check in — bonus!
The food here was also really good… not by hotel food standards, but by regular food standards. I loved the bacon (OMG — so good), and yogurt + granola they had at breakfast each morning. The homemade pastries were also pretty delightful. Oh, and the homemade peppermint patties… yum!
Also, make sure you peruse around the grounds. I visited during June, but they had some of the best kept flowers I’d ever seen! And the hydrangeas! Gah!
Though — no coffee pot in the room?! What gives?! It must be something to do with being a LEED Gold building, but oye — that was painful. They do have coffee service in the lobby starting at 6:00 am, but if you’re wanting a cup o’ joe right when you wake up, you’d better make sure you’re decent before making the trip to the lobby.

The Allison is an ideal hotel for couples seeking a romantic and luxurious getaway in Oregon Wine Country. The location is about 50 minutes south of PDX — convenient to the airport, but far enough in the countryside that it feels like a secluded retreat.
The rooms are thoughtfully designed — gas fireplaces, black-​out shades, in-​room filtered tap water dispenser, bay window seats, and a separate tub and shower with an interior bathroom window that opens to the living room.
The amenities of the resort are similarly impressive. The pool area is beautiful, with clear ceilings, and an option to open to the outside terrance on a warm day. The grounds are well kept, and the views of the rolling hills and vineyards are wonderful.
The only minor complaint I would have is about the check-​in process. We arrived early at 11AM and understood that our room would not be ready yet. But the front staff said that the previous guests had already checked out, so the wait wouldn’t be too long. We decided to grab lunch and start wine tasting instead of waiting around. Good thing we did, because we didn’t get a call back about our room being ready until nearly 3 pm!

–We weren’t able to try the spa services, as they were pretty booked for the weekend and didn’t have availability on the spot. Definitely book ahead before you arrive.
–Complimentary valet or self parking.
–No coffee in room, but complimentary coffee in the lobby.

The rooms are lovely and the grounds are relaxing and beautifully manicured.
The staff is super friendly and helpful.
I am here for a conference and the continental breakfast offered amazing granola and yogurt !
I will visit this place again for sure!

I just love The Allison. Guests are welcomed from the moment they walk in and catered to throughout the stay. My room was incredibly comfortable, the amenities are great, and I particularly love their turn down service and bed side water (the sustainable water jars are adorable!)
Just a short drive from Portland this is a fantastic weekend getaway — an oasis within an hour! If you’re coming in from out of town this is a fantastic retreat and just miles away from great vineyards!

For me this is one of the best places I have ever stayed. The Inn, the people, the amenities, the restaurant and the property were all amazing.
Newberg, as a town, is really in the middle of nowhere, about 45 minutes to an hour south of Portland, but the Allison Inn seems even more secluded than that, though you are not too far from some great wineries.
The property is located off the beaten path a bit and in the middle of an expansive property surround by vineyards, woods and hazelnut orchards. The place is pristine, everything you (well at least me) would expand from a highly touted place. The people there were extremely friendly, knowledgable and engaging (without being overbearing). Always willing to help you out no matter what the issue (not that we had any issues).
Our room was immaculate and contained many amenities. I think the only thing not available in the room was coffee, but they supplied it downstairs. I personally would enjoy coffee in the room, but this is not something that gets me bent out of shape. We had a nice big room with a king size bed, fireplace and a balcony overlooking the gardens and vineyards. Housekeeping did a great job cleaning each and everyday. The hotel staff, knowing it was our anniversary upon check in, also had a bottle of bubbles waiting for us. That is a really nice touch!
Off of the main lobby area you will find a large sitting area with a very nice fireplace. Each night they had a wine tasting in this part of the hotel for guests to come down and enjoy some wine. There is also a small bar area and the hotel restaurant called Jory (named after a popular soil type in the area). At least I think that is why it was named Jory… I have been wrong in the past.
Right off of the restaurant/​bar/​fireplace sitting area is a nice outdoor deck that has an outdoor fireplace and some nice seats. Since it was October, it was nice to sit outside by the fire and enjoy a glass or two or more of wine. All around the property there are some nice gardens with adirondack chairs where you can go and sit and relax. Some of the gardens have piped in music, almost like an outdoor spa. There is also a nice walking trail that circles some of the vineyards on the property.
Both the wife and I did a spa afternoon and it was fantastic. This is my 2^nd spa experience ever and it was great. The spa has a ton of services available for both men, women and couples. i had a facial and it was the most relaxed I have felt in sometime, no doubt about it. My wife agrees, the spa was great.
There is a small gym near the spa area as well. Nothing spectacular, but I am on vacation, so I really did not want to run or workout at all.
I really feel we got great value for the money we spent here. To me, it was first class all the way. Nothing about the place was lacking to me.

I will start at the beginning. Check in. 3 attendees check us in, luggage rack, opening doors, smiles… easiest check in ever. Concierge amazing, luggage brought in, every detail explained … Room. Immaculate ! Fireplace, beautiful view, tub with view of TV, great amenities, lavender bath salts & soap, complimentary snacks, Next… head to the bar. Flights of wine superb, «James «our bartender, full of excellent suggestions & winery secrets. We ordered the prawns. So good ! Head back to our room & then relax before dinner. This hotel is just amazing. We do not have a single complaint. Every detail is thought of ! We could not be happier !!! Fantastic !!!

My 8 month pregnant wife was a champ and OK’ed a trip to PDX for The 1 Moto show and as a token of my appreciation booked a last minute stay at the Allison Inn.
They did not disappoint! We arrived before our room was ready which gave us a chance to walk around and explore their beautiful property and check out the chef’s garden and vineyard nearby. After sipping on some wine outside we got a call informing us that our room was ready and bags were taken up… PLUS they left a nice bottle of Pinot as a thanks for our patience.
Despite being Valentine’s weekend they were extremely accommodating. Luckily someone canceled and Tallie was able to get massage while I took advantage of the spa.
I’m not usually a spa guy, but I could def get used to their sauna and eucalyptus steam room. I even enjoyed a glass of scotch in the lounge in my comfy robe while waiting for my wife to finish up her massage.
Dinner was equally fantastic. We sat at the chef’s counter and would highly recommend the Wagyu sirloin cooked over an open fire. It’s also fun watching the team crank out plate after plate. Almost felt like we were watching a TV show on the food network.
The best part of our stay was the service. I know you’re paying for the experience but everyone here were next level. They had the right amount of presence without being intrusive.
We’ll certainly come back!

This review is for the hotel ONLY.
You will not find a place more gorgeous in the area. Period. Attention to detail is first priority here followed closely by guest comfort. If you want the five star experience in the beautiful Oregon countryside, this is the place to go.
This is a quiet hotel nestled amongst the hills that make Oregon known for wine. Rooms are beautifully appointed: shampoo, conditioner, hairdryer, water glasses, corkscrew, treats upon arrival, huge t.v. with all the channels you could need, luxurious sheets, plenty of towels, big bathroom, big tub, powerful shower. I could go on and on.
Notes that I think would be helpful in deciding to stay here:
— Not a good place for kids
— Restaurant at the hotel, JORY, known for its impressive wine selection
— Snacks and water in the room are complimentary. And, they are really good snacks.
— Accessible and easy to maneuver around. Big hallways and large rooms.
— You pay for the luxury, nothing is inexpensive here but you definitely get what you pay for.
— A terrace level standard king room is plenty big for a couple looking for a romantic vacation/​night away if you want to save a *little* money.
— No minibar but head to the bar or order in a bottle of wine.
–You are not next to any major tourist attractions beyond wineries, although Portland and other nearby spots are within half an hour’s drive.
A funny side note: I love these rooms so much I jotted down their layout for my next house.

I have to admit that for travel accomodations, we are usually more of the Hilton Garden Inn (or thereabouts) demographic. But after reading the wonderful reviews on this Inn, I figured for a belated 25^th wedding anniversary winery tour, The Allison Inn was it.
Our stay was way too brief, a couple of nights, but it was a superb choice. Terrific ambiance, beautiful grounds, ever so comfortable rooms, and fantastico service await you. And, a top notch restaurant on premises, Jory (see separate review). However, as fellow Unilocaler Michele R. related in her review, you may find it somewhat of a chore to leave and go to the wineries, it is so nice in your suite and The Inn. Comfy robes, complimentary drinking water, and a snack basket of Oregon made treats made it feel like home. Maybe better than home for some. My one tiny complaint is, could there be some XL robes available in the future?
We had a top floor suite which gave a great view of the vineyard. But in the dry season, a ground or terrace level room would be great for enjoying a direct exit to the grounds or for a patio cocktail or snack. We recommend that you take a walk around the grounds and enjoy the beauty in landscaping and the bronze sculptures placed throughout the grounds.
So if you are used to accomodations at this price point or like us, thought maybe we were buying our room (kidding), we highly recommend The Allison Inn for a base of operations for your next winery tour. We will return.
