I’ve lived in NYC 10 years, moved 4 times, and Upstairs Downstairs moving was BY FAR the best experience I’ve had with movers in NYC. I moved in October 2015 and got quotes from several movers. Upstairs Downstairs was not the cheapest, but also not the most expensive estimate I received. The best part is, after reaching out for an estimate, the owner, Vincent, came to my apartment to see where I was moving from and how much stuff I was moving, and gave me a binding price. Not an estimate, an actual price. So I knew EXACTLY how much I would spend on my move, no surprises at the end of the day. This is what sealed the deal for me. On the day of the move, the crew was AMAZING, moved me out of my walk-​up studio apartment on the Upper East Side, to my new apartment downtown on the West Side in 2 hours. 2 HOURS!!! Start to finish. They were incredibly professional, careful, and efficient. Nothing broke, no issues, and no stress. Michelle in the office was very helpful, especially with getting my building the COI. I cannot recommend this business enough. Worth the expense and I am SO GLAD I didn’t use the «cheaper» movers. I will definitely use Upstairs Downstairs again and have recommended them to all my friends..

I’ve used Upstairs Downstairs moving twice within Manhattan, and with moving being as stressful as anything in life can be, the ease with which the move went makes them deserved of 5 stars. These guys were fast, efficient, and took great care to protect my furniture. Moving is not something I look forward to, but I know that when I have to move, these guys are the ones to use.

The team from Upstairs Downstairs moved me a couple of weeks ago and it couldn’t have gone smoother. It was a multi-​stop trip with three drop-​off locations and we were able to get it done even earlier than expected. Vincent the owner is no-​nonsense, Michelle in the office is very accommodating and the team that moved me was just great. Danny was the foreman and the movers included Noah, Melo and John. Thank you for making a difficult day very easy. Would definitely use Upstairs Downstairs again. Worth every dollar.

This is an outstanding company. From Vincent’s «no surprises» estimate and contract, to Michelle in the office (warm, smart and reassuring) to Danny and his crew, the experience moving out, storing, and moving back in was smooth and even pleasant! Our building staff was also impressed by the care and courtesy with which Danny and the guys worked. Our furniture was in storage (at a very reasonable rate) for what turned out to be half a year, and came back in great shape. Each one of the guys on the team seemed happy to be on the job, genuinely concerned to get things right. And they did!

I’ve moved myself what seems to be 100 times and I will NEVER do it again. Moving is never fun but Upstairs Downstairs Moving made it SO easy. They’ve moved me 3 times — up and down 3 flights of stairs, in and out of storage, to multiple locations, helped pack last minute items — all with swift (but careful!) and friendly service. Vinny and Michelle are just great to work with and the crew are friendly, professional and work fast! Hopefully I will not be moving anytime soon, but when I do — Upstairs Downstairs will be doing the heavy lifting.

Terrible. Cancelled on someone else to get me a Saturday appointment one month ago. They were already $ 250 MORE expensive than the next closest quote, but I chose them due to a recommendation. Then 2 days before my move, they cancel on me! Really?

Just finished a complicated move with a spectacular crew!
I’m a professional organizer, and my client was moving years of inventory into storage — but would still need access to it all (and to know exactly which box each item ended up in!) for their online business. I had developed a way to inventory and store everything — but the process would be lengthy and cumbersome for anyone!
This phenomenal team worked with me in a very systematic way to create a numbered inventory that would correspond to a set of numbered boxes.
They treated these items with the utmost care and respect and delivered all boxes in perfect condition. Once at the warehouse, they unloaded and stored all the numbered boxes in order (no easy feat… there were 375 boxes!).
All in all, these movers were professional, courteous, careful, and above all — they were problem solvers!
I will definitely use them again and again.

I’ve used this company for two moves now in both Brooklyn and Manhattan and no one is better. They also stored my stuff for me for a month and kept everything safe and sound. They are fair, on time, respectful, reliable, and flexible. They care about their clients and handle certificates of insurance with speed. Best movers in NYC.

First, I want to say that I’m pretty sure there’s only one Upstairs Downstairs Movers; however, all the stuff I have from them has their address as 2073 8^th Ave, NY, NY rather than the one shown here on Unilocal.
That said, they’re worth every star I’ve given. Moving is hell. They make it less so, a lot less. Vince, the owner, came to my place himself to calculate the flat fee. It took him all of 10 minutes to come up with a guaranteed flat fee that was about $ 150 lower than the next closest estimate (which those movers were quick to point out were only «estimates» and not fixed fees). He answered all my questions, waving away my concerns about where they’d park to load stuff in my neighborhood («that’s our problem»), and anything else I thought of in the next day or two was easily answered by Michelle, their ace on the phone in the office. She kept me updated until and through the move itself, even talking directly to my building super when there were questions about what the building needed by way of proof of insurance (which they have completely)
The unusually multi-​ethnic moving team arrived promptly (representing Mexico, Egypt, Tibet and Nepal), introduced themselves and set to work quickly and efficiently. At one point, someone in the building complained to the super that the movers were holding up the elevator (despite the fact that there are two elevators and I was moving during the hours allowed). The super got into a small argument with one of the moving guys and told him that he was «banned from the building.» When the lead mover got wind of this, he had the mover who’d had the argument seek out the super to apologize. They shook hands and the move went on apace. I mention this because I often feel that what’s important isn’t that one makes mistakes or screw-​ups — we all do – but rather how one follows up to make things right. Alex, the lead mover, demonstrated real character and poise in dealing with this very minor issue.
They kept me informed about everything they were doing throughout the move, including a discussion of whether my very old IKEA trundle bed that had to come apart to fit through the door would survive the move given its poor condition (damn that IKEA particle board!). It did, and Alex made sure he was the one re-​assembling it. They gave me their thoughts on where stuff should go («put the TV against that wall because the afternoon sun won’t hit it on that side»), picked up after themselves, removed all extraneous packing material and made sure that I was happy with everything before they left.
Here’s the thing. These are genuinely good people making the most of what can’t be the most exciting job in the world. I don’t know what Vince pays them or how he keeps them motivated, but they were fun to be around (to the extent anything’s fun in a move) and worked very hard, fast and with great integrity.
There’s just no contest here.
This is nuts. Who writes a review this long for a moving company? That’s how impressed I am.

Recently hired these guys to move a bunch of rather heavy boxes, crates and tubs into a storage unit. They were prompt, did the job way faster than I thought humanly possible, and weren’t rough with my belonging. One of the gentlemen attempted to carry two milk crates of compact discs behind his back and spilled the contents of both on the floor. A couple of cracked cases. No big deal.
We left separately for my storage facility and both managed to arrive at nearly the same time. They unloaded the truck rather quickly, and got everything stored neatly.
The downside to leaving this review is that I don’t plan on going back to that storage unit for a few months, so I won’t be inspecting my belongings for damage any time soon.
But honestly, most of that stuff was weighing me down so if any of it is broken, I won’t be *too* heartbroken to be forced to live without it. That’s why it’s all in storage, anyway.

Used Upstairs Downstairs for the second time and they did excellent work again. Had me moved in no time. Highly recommend.

I used Upstairs Downstairs Moving for a recent move from Jersey City to Harlem, and would wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone moving in the area (I think they do long distance moves, too). I was comparing price quotations from a few companies in JC, when I figured it may be good to reach out to an NYC company, too. I called to set up a time for the manager to come over and give me an estimate for the move. What surprised me most was that he ended up giving me a set cost– no estimate, no chance for any hidden fees, and the quotation included labor, as well as wardrobe boxes, tape, plastic wrap, etc. His price wasn’t the lowest I got, but it wasn’t the highest either, and with everything he was including, it seemed like the best bet.
On the move day, 4 guys showed up and started packing and moving everything. The speed at which these guys worked was really impressive. They packed up all my odds and ends and had everything in their truck within about 4 hours– I was really shocked! I met them in the city a few hours later, where they unpacked everything and carried it all up 4 flights of narrow stairs. This includes an entire bedroom set, 3-​piece sectional sofa, love seat, 2 wardrobe boxes, one TV stand, one flat screen TV, and tons of odds and ends. They helped me unpack pretty much everything, too, and somehow fit all the belongings of my 750 sq ft apartment in JC into my new 550 sq ft Harlem nook. They did crack a relatively cheap bookcase I bought from Target, but they glued it together and it’s not too noticeable now.
What was even more impressive was that they actually seemed to be enjoying themselves throughout the day. They were so nice the entire time, and even offered to fix minor things, like wobbly chair legs, that were broken before the move. By the end of the day, they were beat, but were still cracking jokes and laughing. I seemed more exhausted than them!
I’ve never hired movers before and was sort of dreading the experience. However, Upstairs Downstairs Moving made the process super easy and stress-​free. Also, there is no passive aggressive pressure to tip them (as I know is common with even small-​time movers), but be generous. I think I ended up tipping 15%, and wished I had more $$ on hand that day, because they did a really thorough job and definitely earned it. I will for sure hire them again.

These guys are the best, hands down. We have moved with them three times now, most recently out-​of-​state. Our things arrived quickly and intact. The price was fair, particularly given that we would not have to wait a week or more for our things. The packers were amazing – they had our belongings on the truck and the furniture well-​packed and protected within 4 hours. On the flip side, we were unpacked in the same amount of time. We are actually sad that in moving from NYC, we’ll never get to do business with Upstairs Downstairs again. Oh, and I should say that they gave us endless boxes, paper, and Michelle in the office is really lovely!

Today there was an Upstairs Downstairs truck double parked in front of my NYC building. The cargo compartment was wide open and there were things in the truck. However, there was no one attending it. This just confirms my earlier review. Having not gotten back everything they took and stored for me, I would never use Upstairs Downstairs again or recommend them to anyone. Better to use a mover that keeps watch over your belongings rather than leaving them for anyone to take.

Upstairs Downstairs moving is amazing. I am the local realtor in Dobbs Ferry and use The McDades frequently. Moving is a high stress business and the moves are flawless. I can really appreciate it when my clients thank me for recommending the McDades. I also love the fact that their is never any suprise costs. The quote given is what you will pay! Lastly the McDades are local and live in the Rivertowns so you will see them helping out and coaching on the soccer field. I do not hesitate to use Upstairs Downstairs moving

I recently moved to Brooklyn from Manhattan, out of a 1BR into a to a small 2BR, 4^th floor walk-​up, and I had a great experience with Upstairs Downstairs Moving.
The guys who did our move were strong (athletic), fast workers, and pleasant to talk to. The stairs to our new apartment are somewhat narrow and steep, but the guys moved everything in quickly.
Their truck was very clean inside (I saw a smooth wood floor). And they bagged our mattresses in plastic, which was great. They also brought their own big cardboard boxes (maybe 4 – 5 ft. tall) that have a hanging rod built into the top, to move the hanging clothes. They moved them out of the old closets into the boxes and then right into the new closets. Sweet.
The only drawback was that initially I had trouble getting the owner on the phone, and therefore we didn’t get the weekday that we wanted – instead we had to move on the weekend. Maybe this was just coincidence or me calling at the wrong times. Either way, definitely book in advance!
All in all, a good experience.

They were professional and introduced them selves, courteous and friendly. They took their time and packed but worked at a pace which you, knew immediately these guys were pros and the job would be done, well and it was.

moving is extremely stressful, as we all know, i needed a fast bedbug/​stress-​free move. UDM did it in one day, no problems, very efficient and affordable. highly recommend

I used Upstairs Downstairs for an out of state move and was upset when they ruined my bureau and damaged other furniture. The movers took zero responsibility for this action, trying to tell me I must have bought the dresser second hand (which I certainly did not) and that it was already damaged. I showed them the damages on the matching bed and the ‘foreman’ gave me a dark brown marker to color in the scratches. … not the answer I was looking for. According to their website and paperwork, the customer is covered by minimal insurance which I tried to make a claim on.
I called Vince, the owner of the company, twice to talk about the damages and sent an email but have yet to receive an answer. I am very disappointed in how I have been treated by Upstairs Downstairs and caution anyone out there to not use this company.
In addition, these folks expect a 15−20% (of the entire move price!) as standard gratuity which is WAY out of line. I polled four other movers for a reasonable rate and they all thought this was outrageous. However, if you tip Upstairs Downstairs less (which you know I did), they express dissatisfaction … even after they trashed my expensive furniture! While cost was an important factor, please consider the value of your possessions when evaluating a mover. Quite frankly, I wish I had never used Upstairs Downstairs.
