Downgraded from 2 stars to 1 star after holding off at this establishment for awhile. I ventured back, selected a $ 17 bottle of wine and was told «yea it’s OK for the lower end of our selection.» If that’s what you’re looking for, head to USqWines!

Great selection of wines and spirits, but absurd markups. The highest markups in Manhattan. If your buying a case or more when there doing 30% discount go for it. Other then that only go there for hard to find items.

The first time I bought from these guys, I bought a corked wine. In returning the $ 21 bottle, I felt they were rude. I didn’t care for the attitude. At no point did they say «can we help you find a similar wine in the same price range» or something similar. I normally go to Astor Place Wines and will continue to buy my wine at Astor.

Placed a large delivery order with confidence because the in-​store shopping experience was always good. Unfortunately, delivery orders seem to be quite the opposite. The order did not arrive, and each time I called to check on it, they were dismissive, misleading and rude. Finally I cancelled the order altogether and went elsewhere. I expect reliability and professionality from an upper-​end merchant like this, and when things go awry (as is sometimes inevitable), good customer service and a speedy resolution. You will find none of these things at Union Square Wine & Spirits.

This is a good but expensive wine shop. They deal only in the highest end wines. If you want expensive, hard to find wine; this is a good place to start.
The store is clean and well laid out (for its price point, I would be surprised if it was any other way). The staff is friendly and reasonably accommodating.
I noticed that they also have wine tasting events in the store which would have been nice to take part in, but I had my kids with me. So basically, I needed a drink but couldn’t have one…

USQ is usually well stocked and the prices on certain items are competitive. For instance, I was able to purchase bitters of a respectable quality for under $ 10. I also like the layout of the space, which makes it relatively intuitive to find what you are looking for. And, if you are having difficulty, one of their friendly staff members will assist.
Overall, a solid place to quickly find what you need and not necessarily break the bank.

Bought a wine from here a few weeks ago that I opened a few days ago and it tasted/​smelled like paint thinner. The owner refused to exchange w. o a receipt. I said I probably had it as a bank transaction. Looked and the customer service rep said even though it said union square wine it wasn’t it b. c the wine was $ 14 it wasn’t it. The sales rep was upset when I said «smell the wine it’s paint thinner.»
They have some good wines but they aren’t honest. If a wine hasn’t been packaged properly it’s not worth buying. Go a few blocks down to Astor wine and spirits

Great selection of wine and excellent tastings. The staff at the register is a bit too rude and too worried about socializing.
Their tastings are awesome and 100% free. They also have a card that allows you to taste things when there isn’t a specific tasting.

I’ve purchased wine from this shop more than a few times and I am upset that they never offered me a tasting card, I feel duped. I just discovered that they offer tap tastings and I would have loved to try some tap wine during one of my many trips there. I think they are pricier than Astor but I tend to stop by when I am in the neighborhood and don’t want anything from Trader’s slim selection and I don’t want to troop it to Astor.

service (meaning education behind different alcohols) is great depending on the associate you get… but the associates in general tend to favor or engage /​cater to the white males. They would walk around and proactively engage them in conversation while i was asked to wait for requested service. When i go to a liquor store, i am not just coming to purchase but to be consulted with a willingness to try something new. but i should never feel less than when i am waiting for associates to assist…

The selection is good, and the novelty of the points to taste gimmick is something that won’t get old. Their selection is nice.
Staff is helpful, but nothing out of the ordinary.
Two stars because they mark up more than any other store I have visited in Manhattan. There just isn’t a reasonable explanation for the high cost.
I wouldn’t be in a rush to recommend the shop.

DO NOT BUY FROM THIS PLACE. «You only buy here when there are sales and we have to deliver to queens» is what an employee said to me in a nasty tone – this after I’ve bought thousands of dollars of wine at the store. I can no longer give them my money. The absolute meanness of the manager Catherine and the owner she works for is out of this world. Their business model is to sell as cheaply as possible and to treat the customer badly. I put up with this in order to get good prices but can no longer in good conscience buy one cent worth of wine from this stinking establishment.

When I do wine tasting classes, Union Square Wine & Spirits consistently comes up as the place to go if you’re looking for a specific wine. So the 2 stars is for the vino selection only.
However, the markup there is truly appalling. I have very specific prices in mind when I go shopping for my «regular» types of liquor, and of course they vary within around $ 5 based on the specific liquor store and neighborhood. USQW&S is noticeably higher than the majority of their competitors in Manhattan.
I stick to my local wine shop, Sea Grape, for fantastic variety, reasonable prices, and a cordial and helpful staff. Or I go to Warehouse Wine & Spirits right down the street for Jersey bottle prices. But I don’t get suckered into spending any money this place.

I shop here regularly. I often attend the tastings on Saturday, some of which are really incredible – the apple one in October, the dessert one in November, and the sparkling wine tasting a few weeks ago were all really fantastic. I never go with the intention of buying, but always do.
Recently, I brought a friend who later bought me a bottle of wine as a gift, but confused one that I liked with one that I did not. When I returned to the store, they were very very gracious about allowing me to exchange it, and gave me a credit for the difference. Great service.
I should also say that this store has introduced me to a lot of great stuff that I hadn’t tried before, across the spectrum. They have a lot of small production, hand-​picked stuff.
And, ultimately, I think their prices are pretty fair. It isn’t a discount wine store, but the value always seems very good to me.
