The Upper Crust

Dan Fehlig, talented event designer, of The Upper Crust, created a superb Bat Mitzvah celebration for our daughter, family and friends. Dan and his team transformed their empty loft space, located at 91 Horatio, into a Hollywood extravaganza! Dan has extraordinary ideas and surrounds himself and his clients with only the best talent. We felt that Dan always stayed true to us and our vision, while at the same time respecting our budget.
Top hats off to everyone involved in making our party a red carpet event to remember. Special thanks to Gerald: breathtaking décor, Laurie: gorgeous Hollywood-​style portraits, David: creative photo station, Sparks: outstanding audio/​visual effects and confetti, Abe: savory food, Joanna: keeping me calm and making sure everything ran smoothly, Dan: his passion for what he does and for making the process fun.
Our goal was to design a party that both the kids and adults would enjoy. Mission accomplished. Our guests, young and old, could not and have not stopped talking about how unique, sophisticated, gorgeous and fun the evening was. Thank you!

I’m only going to review the catering & the venue, which is why I am giving it 4 stars.
I used other services, but I’m choosing not to review those here.
My party turned out spectacularly. Everything was nearly perfect (nothing is every perfect) & what I wanted! People are still talking about it.
In the end, that is what matters, right?
I give TUC 5 stars for the food. It was simply amazing, and my friends are still talking about it months after my event.
Joanna was amazing to work with. She had fantastic ideas that meshed beautifully with what I wanted. The chef was able to tweak the menu to exactly what I wanted without substitutions!
Everything that was supposed to be hot was hot.
Everything that was supposed to be crisp was crisp.
The bartenders were helpful & accommodating.
Joanna’s excitement & enthusiasm are infectious, and I enjoyed each meeting with her. To be honest, I was a bit apprehensive because they ‘don’t do tastings,’ but I had nothing to worry about. I’d read the reviews of the terrific tood, and their catering more than lived up to its reputation.
Joanna thought of everything, so truly nothing was left to chance. I didn’t have a single worry throughout the night! (I only wish I had more to eat!)
She was there throughout the party, making sure everything ran smoothly. She presented me with options during the night that didn’t require a lot of thought. She wasn’t intrusive.
The cost wasn’t a surprise, everything was bang-​on as expected & within what I’d read for Manhattan weddings & major parties.
Joanna wasn’t the coordinator, but she was a rock for me. I can’t say enough about her.
I recommend their catering without reservation!
The venue is warm & can be transformed into a magical place for an unforgettable evening (I happened by a week or so before my event and a week after, and I saw it set up for completely different types of parties — all stunning).
They recommended a great DJ, who used my play list & had the party rocking throughout the night.
The staff during the party were fantastic. They were so attentive and kind. My friends ‘complained’ after that they overate & overdrank because each time they turned around someone was there with food or a drink for them.
I’ll take that complaint!
I brought in my own florist & desserts, so I can’t opine on their services or recommendations for either of those.

As a Bride on a budget I can freely say STEER CLEAR! They treated my fiancé and I like we were cheap (and even referenced this in a email to us) because we didn’t go with their design services and instead used their catering services and rented their venue. We had an issue with one of the staff members who was not only unprepared for two of our meetings but was rude to us as well and the owner basically told us that they support their staff and find it hard to believe based on all of their positive reviews that this happened. My wedding coordinator and all of my vendors were speechless when I showed them the emails that transpired between the owner and us and how rude and unconcerned he was. Needless to say my fiancé and I are shocked and astounded and know several owners in the bar and restaurant business and are spreading the word. Every person’s wedding should be equally important. It should not be based on how much money you spend.

Great venue space. I went to a wedding here and they did a great job creating an alter space. Then as soon as the wedding was over the fun begins. They had the typical bartenders and a bunch of waiters roaming around with plates of wonderful hors d’oeuvres.

Good friends of ours had their Kosher/​Asian fusion wedding reception at 91 and it was great.
The venue is easily transformed into whatever your planner can dream up. The reception we attended had a 90 minute cocktail «hour» followed by a 5 course seated Asian/​Fusion (Kosher) dinner served family style.
Meanwhile, during the beginning of the meal the space used for cocktails was transfomed into the DJ/​Dancing area. All the while, terrific wine, beer and cocktails flowed from a well-​run open bar.
This is a good option for planning an NYC small wedding (the one we attended was about 80 – 90 people and felt crowded at times.). If you are having a big wedding, this will be too small.
It would be a GREAT space for an office holiday party or Bat/​Bar mitzvah as well.
My only suggestion? Better a/​c & ventilation — especially near the 3 unisex bathrooms. The bathroom area was hot and smelled awful.
3 bathrooms was not really adequate for the group especially when one was being used alot for the bride’s wardrobe changes.
In anycase, the venue is fine — but make sure you get a skilled, competent event planner to help you bring in the right look & catering.

Jen and Kevin had their wedding here last weekend. The entire experience was a delight. The space is bright and open and lovely. They performed the ceremony to the left as you enter and there were lovely gauzy curtains separating the dining area from the other side.
once the ceremony was over there was a great little cocktail hour and mingling while the staff prepared the Hors d’aeuvre and served them. the dinner was also quite divine. the service was impeccable and efficient. we were very happy and pleased and a wonderful time was had by all.
