As of October of 2012, Tang Pavilion is under new management. We will be making small changes accordingly, but everything will be staying as is. The same waitstaff and chefs will be staying on with our restaurant to serve you the best dishes! Come by and let us feed you! While on a quick weekend run to Manhattan, my wife and I found ourselves cold and hungry and decided to just eat at «that Chinese restaurant down from the hotel.» Were we in for a pleasant surprise! We walked in to find waiters in black ties that were so attentive that it seemed they knew exactly when we needed something. I ordered pork fried rice and my wife got Lo-​mein. They were each family-​sized servings that we easily shared and had left-​overs. The food was fantastic! We have never experienced Chinese food this good. Perhaps we are just regular-​people, but to us this was a treat. The cost for the great food and wonderful service: $ 23. I was stunned when I got the check and that was all it cost. We highly recommend this restaurant for a nice quiet meal that will knock your socks off!

Tang Pavilion is probably one of the very few places in NYC that serves traditional Shanghainese cuisine. The place is old school, which is quite refreshing since you don’t find dining places like this anymore. Price is on the expensive side, but worth the money. We had drunken chicken soup dumplings, and jellyfish for appetizers. All of them were solid minus the drunken chicken. For entrée, we had the special stew pork butt, it was done in the traditional cook way, which is hard to find in this city. Also had snow pea shoots and steamed fish. Both were solid but not as good as the pork. Overall, very good meal, though I would only come here on special occasions due to the price

So my second… no third time one sit down two take outs… the experience the same the food consistent. Though pricey as Asian fusion goes, considering they are midtown and are white tablecloth establishment where it looks like they do a lot of business lunches and dinners the pricing is on scale I suppose.
Overall the food is fresh interesting enough to so something different everytime and it hits the spot.

Tang Pavilion is great Chinese at a very fair price! I have paid 2−3x for Chinese in Manhattan that pales in comparison to Tang. Their pepper steak is one of my favorites and is a very generous serving size. I highly recommend Tang Pavilion for solid midtown Chinese, rated ‘A’ and a great price. They’ve also been there for 25-​years, a major badge of honor for NYC.

I did not know what to expect on Christmas Eve. I was pleasantly surprised. The wait staff was very accommodating and the food was good (except for the Ma Po tofu, which had absolutely zero flavor; I think the wait staff got confused when everyone at the table kept asking for non-​spicy food). The cold noodles were good, and the vegetable dumplings very good. The chicken and broccoli was solid, as was the sauteed tofu with mixed vegetables. That said, nothing blew me away; none of the food was great or truly memorable, it was only decent.
Overall the service was four stars and the food three stars. I am being generous and giving this four stars due to good and friendly service that was accomodating to our large group on Christmas Eve.

There is something charmingly retro and old-​fashioned about this restaurant, where the staff wear suits, bring your foods on trays and diligently look over your table without being intrusive. The fact of the matter is, they don’t make restaurants like this anymore, which is a shame. Yes, of course there’s room for David Chang, etc., but I fear that this kind of restaurant is almost becoming extinct and it wasn’t so long ago when they were at the forefront of the Chinese restaurant explosion. Without restaurants like these, other Chinese restaurants would not have been possible. The food is what it is – good and nothing more or less. On a Sunday afternoon, the place was bustling with groups large and small, which was heartening to see. I hope Tang Pavilion stays around for a long time. It does the heart good to know that there’s still a place in NYC for a place like this.

If you are not giving this place 4+ stars you need to be stabbed in the eye with a chopstick. Soup Dumplings are legit. Great got work lunches and takeout. Always quality and fast service.

Made it in here just under the wire before they closed the kitchen after the lunch rush was over.
I ordered vegetable spring rolls, egg drop soup and vegetable fried rice. Everything was really good and my husband said his General Tsao’s chicken was really good too. The only thing that was odd was there was corn in the egg drop soup, which I’d never seen before. It wasn’t bad, just different.
No kids menu and there were business types in there so it was a little awkward with my two kids (8 & 5), but no one said anything to us or gave us the dreaded «why’d you bring your kids in HERE» look.
Overall the food and service were great, but knowing what we know now, I never would have brought my kids in there– it just isn’t a kids type place.

The wifey and I ate here when I was in town for work. We started with the scallion pancake and followed it with sweet and sour prawns. The scallion pancake was delicious but the prawn dish was just ok.
We only came here because it was close to the hotel. We did not take much time in thinking before ordering. I would honestly try it again. The service was quick. The scallion pancake was SOOOO good.

Although the food was good, the horrible service reduces this place to 2 stars.
After we came in and were seated by the host, we discovered that the restaurant doesn’t serve a few dishes because they are closing soon before dinner. Not a big deal, but still annoying we weren’t told so.
Because they were closing in 14 minutes, the food was rushed to our table and we were done after 10 minutes — still, not the worse but annoying.
But the thing that broke us was the fact that they decided for us how much we should tip. NOT COOL.

The hubby, baby and I dined here on our first night in the city and chose this place based on the reviews and short distance from our hotel. We ordered the scallion pancakes which were great and the walnut prawns were alright. It was more like sweet and sour prawns alongside candied walnuts. Dessert was complimentary and we got some fresh fruit (slice of orange and two slices of melons) and the standard fortune cookies. Overall, it’s decent Chinese. If we ever return, perhaps we’ll try what they’re better known for– Shanghainese cuisine.
Kids note: No high chairs at this restaurant but there was enough space for our baby to sit next to us in her stroller.

Came here with SO’s family. Seems overpriced for what it is and is standard Chinese fair with upscale waiter service. We weren’t blown away by any of the dishes, from the cold jellyfish platter to sea cucumber to dumplings to fish course, or anything in between. Dessert was alright too, nothing memorable or special. I probably would not come back considering all the other food choices in New York City. Staff was pleasant and courteous.

Very classy restaurant. On first impression doesn’t look like a big restaurant but you turn a corner to another dining room. Tables were a little tight but we were kinda in a corner. I highly suggest sharing a few dishes among your group — not only are the dishes a little pricey, but they seem to be served family-​style. For 6 of us, we got some appetizers and 4 entrees which was perfect amount of food. The soup dumplings and scallion pancakes were realllllly yummy appetizers! They served fruit with fortune cookies for complimentary dessert which was a nice little touch.

This was my boss’s farewell lunch, so I already decided no matter how good the food here was, I am gonna give full credit here. The food impressed me significantly whatsoever.
We had a shanghainese in our team and according to him, the food was indeed decent. Especially enjoyed the sweet ribs, dumplings and the lamb jelly. For main course, steamed fish and black bean fish were two outstanding choices.
The inside décor was very delicate which made me miss home a lot. After all, what you are eating is important, however who you are eating with probably is more crucial.

I understand what the other reviewers were saying about the service. It’s definitely on the slow side and a little emotionless. All the servers are in suits, which is a little weird to me based on the décor and atmosphere of the restaurant itself. Most of the customers were men in work suits.
The food was great. They have a large liquor selection for those that want a stiff drink. The soup dumplings were delicious! I also had the beef with Chinese broccoli, which was made with tender beef and the sauce wasn’t to sweet.
I will probably get delivery next time, but the food is worth going back.

«Classy Chinese food» — Yes it’s an oxymoron, but it’s what Tang Pavilion provides. An army of white-​suited elderly Chinese waiters seated me. I browsed the menu: lamb sautéed with broccoli and scallions, duck with pineapple, whole steamed fish, fillet mignon with asparagus. The list goes on. But there are mainstays like chicken with broccoli, sesame chicken, and beef with broccoli.
On a recent visit, I tried the lamb sautéed with broccoli, which was a delight. The lamb was a little gamy but the sauce was neither too oily nor thick. An appetizer of drunken chicken was made from deboned breast meat, which was a little tough but I appreciated the lack of bones.
But the main differentiator between Tang Pavilion and other Chinese places is definitely the service. You feel like a Chinese emperor when you eat here, and you definitely pay for it as well. Lunch specials here range from $ 12 – 20, which is high for Chinese food. But it’s nice to treat yourself sometimes!
