Socrates T Kangadis, MD

I recently changed medical insurance. Dr. Kangadis was on the list of participating providers. I checked Unilocal before making my appointment, and I am glad to report that the great reviews are well deserved.
Dr. Kangadis is very amiable and engaging. I told him my problems, and he was totally on the ball. He has a positive attitude, but he’s also a straight shooter.
I read some of the bad reviews of the staff. My first appointment was on the Friday before a major snowstorm, which shut down the city. The office was trying to see the Saturday patients a day early. Was the office hectic? Did I have to wait a while. Of course I did, but I didn’t mind. The staff was showing dedication to their patients, and I can’t fault them for that. Also, they remembered me when I came back for my follow-​up appointment, saying my name as I got to their desk.
I liked that they emailed my prescriptions straight to my pharmacy, so they were ready as soon as I got there. Also, I shortly got an email summarizing my appointment, as well as getting the results of my tests via email a few days after my appointment.
So, if you live in Astoria and are looking for a primary care physician, I can definitely recommend Dr. Kangadis!!!

I am sooooo happy I have Dr K as my primary. Like many reviewers, I also have a fear of going to Drs, any Drs!!! He’s caring, friendly down to earth, non judgemental, and I love his potty mouth!!!
I wish he would do something about his staff though. I totally agree with other reviewers about how incompetent they are, but, after all, it’s not them I’m coming to see or get advice or medical attention from, it’s totally him!!!

I can’t say more then what everyone else here has said but really a genuinely great doc and great guy. Kind, caring, down to earth, and awesome!!!

I Totally recommend! A real gentleman and a scholar! Very genuinely passionate about each and everyone of his patients health. Takes it quite seriously. I actually feel guilty if I fail him cause he Really cares and I’d hate to get that nod of disappointment he once gave me. LOL! Its more motivating than the actual disease that may kill me! LOL!
He Doesn’t treat you like a case number or another mark to bill and milk insurance companies. So I’m happy and have much confidence in him
He’s what every doctor should be!
The staff on the other hand is another story. Though very nice and pleasant each and everyone of them, but as one guy here did mention, they do tend to drop the ball quite a lot, like for instance! Not responding right away to my pharmacist when they need authorization from his office. In one instance it took about over a week to get a respond, and I had to do the calling ultimately since my pharmacist was only getting the voicemail, which by the way no one ever answers nor checks so it seems! :(I had to call their multiple numbers in order to finally get a real person finally! What if it was an emergency??? I shouldn’t have to go to emergency to get a refill for my BP and Diabetes meds! :/​
His staff is either lazy or incompetent or both! Cause it sure isn’t that they’re short handed. In fact, they increased their staff ever since they became affiliated with NYU network. ANd instead of being more efficient, I’m affraid they’ve fallen behind in service response time and quality too! :?
But the Doctor is Great though! But he does need to have a staff meeting ASAP to straighten them out and get that ship back in shape else he’s gonna lose business with these girls I’m afraid who seem to be more concern with whats for lunch and whats playing on internet radio than to check the freakin ton of voicemail messages people have left on it! In fact, if you call now, it still has the old outgoing message created in JUNE saying the Doctor will be out fron Jun to July,…and we’re September already!?? LOL! It feels like no one wants to be the one to pick up the phone or check these messages! The old outgoing message clearly is evidence of the staff not really giving a crap! Its a luck of the draw if you manage to get one to answer and when they do, you get the distinct feeling their trying to blow you off and not bother with your problems! But forgive me, isn’t that what you’re there for, to assist???
It really sucks! Cause I really like this Doctor and this lack of care from his staff is just killing it for me!

Honestly, this is the best doctor I have ever been to, I feel so happy to have found him. After 6 months of dealing with Advantage Care Physician bs I was so worn down and I didn’t go in hoping for anything. At the beginning of the appointment I detailed my plight with ACP and said that I hoped that he could help me and he looked at me flat out and said «Of course I’m going to help you.» He listened to me and never once told me to stop talking about certain things like the other doctors I had been to had. He probably spent about 30 mins going over everything with me, I wanted to cry because for once in 6 months I finally felt like someone would help me. Within 2 mins of talking to me he seemed to know exactly what it was (though he kept listening and asking me questions for 30 mins). When I was leaving he looked at me and said he was going to fix me, which honestly meant so much after all I had been through. I will never see another doctor as long as I’m here and he’s around.

I was referred to Dr. Kangadis by a friend of mine when I was looking for a doctor. She knew my fear of doctors and said that he would be the best for me. FYI I have a legitimate fear of doctors, it’s getting better but my anxiety still kicks in. When I went to him he was so cool and talked to you as if you guys have been friends for years. If I had any questions he would stay and answer them and I never felt rushed or anything. What I also like is that he tries to make you understand whats going on with your body.
If you’re looking for an amazing doctor and someone who you can talk to about your health problems, look no further here he is.

Socrates is a great doctor, super nice guy, totally compassionate, totally cares about his patients, really seems like he knows what he’s doing — but his administrative staff, while totally friendly, personable, and perhaps doing their best, have been a great source of stress for me.
I really don’t want to get into personal details on here, but in short, his admin staff either (1) have lied to me multiple times about correcting a billing mistake [or perhaps were unintentionally telling me false information?], or (2) have problems in following through and submitting the correct paperwork (to their separate third party billing company) to correct their mistakes.
This guy is the best primary care doctor I’ve ever been to, and the staff has all been totally friendly and are perhaps doing their best, but man — it’s been the source of enough stress to make me want to switch doctors, which is a total shame.

Dr K is amazing always friendly and just a great guy. Probably one of the best doctors I’ve had in recent years.

Such an awesome dr!!! Down to earth, helpful, great bedside manner, very knowledgeable… Took his time and spoke to me like a regular person. I highly recommend him. More doctors should strive for the type of care and understanding he offers his patients. The office staff is friendly and helpful. I have a new primary doctor and I couldn’t be happier!!! He even takes my insurance… Which let me tell you, was not easy finding a dr that did! A+++

Great doctor, very good listener and seems to genuinely care about his patients’ health concerns. Very clean office and well mannered assistants at the front desk. Highly recommend.

Dr. Socrates is not only an awesome doctor, but he’s also a great guy. Yes, I had to wait about 30 min. but the ladies behind the desk were helpful and sweet. The office was pretty packed when I arrived, but when it was finally my turn he gave me his 100% attention and not once did I feel rushed. He was informative and understanding about my current (or lack thereof) insurance situation. We discussed the options for my ailment and I left feeling well taken care of. For those without insurance, expect to pay around $ 75 (cash only) for an appointment. I would recommend him to anyone in the Astoria area.

Great doctor! Young, energetic, friendly AND knowledgable! What more could one ask for in a general practitioner?! AND he accepts the insurance company I chose through Obamacare, which was a huge plus.
I was worried about my choice of doctors on obamacare with all the negative hype, but Dr. K absolutely does not disappoint. I’m happy to say my boyfriend and I BOTH have someone we like and trust to check up on our health.

Trying to find a good primary care physician that takes Medicaid in Astoria is like trying to find a unicorn and Dr. Kangadis is that unicorn!
I was recommended by a friend who is a long time patient of his and was happily surprised when I found out that he accepted my insurance. My first initial consultation was a very good experience. After the initial information intake, one of his staff takes down your medical history and your vital signs. Upon meeting him, I was pleasantly surprised at how attentive he is to details and his patient. He truly does listen to you and speaks frankly with honesty and concern. I didn’t feel rushed at all as I have with some PCPs who make you feel like you’re in a factory. He’s an honest to goodness caring doctor. He also respects your own opinions and input about your care and works with you and talks TO you and not AT you. And he’s very funny.
He’s very good at what he does. I recently had blood drawn and he did it personally because I have bad veins. Normally when I have blood drawn it’s painful and I get light headed. He had trouble finding a vein in my arm so he asked me if he could draw from my hand, which I cringed at, but it had to be done. I can honestly say it was the most painless blood draw I’ve ever had and it left no bruising! Just a tiny little mark on my hand and it was over so fast I didn’t have time to get dizzy, lol. He’s very thorough and on every visit you get your vitals taken and are asked about any changes or updates on any medications you may be taking from other doctors. He’s very open and frank when he discusses treatment for specific conditions. He’s even personally answered emails I have sent inquiring about specialists as I search for one. He’s very accessible and down to earth with a great bedside manner.
Depending on the day you may be the only patient (weekday mornings) or the place could be packed (weekends). His staff is pretty responsive although you do sometimes have to «chase» the front desk for certain things, like forms that need to be filled out and returned to you or preauthorizations for tests like MRIs, but they’re all pleasant, polite and very professional. One of his staff administered my allergy test with very little discomfort. They’re always smiling and friendly. The waiting rooms and exam rooms are pristine.
I believe there’s a site where you can book appointments online but I don’t know the name of it. He also can send prescriptions directly to your pharmacy from his office from his computer. It’s very convenient. As long as it’s not a controlled substance, which needs a paper prescription. I’ve left his office and walked home and passed by my pharmacy and had my RX waiting for me. It’s a great time saver.
All in all a great doctor and staff. I feel very confident with my health in his hands.
