This is my friends favorite restaurant in New York. After eating there I could see why. From the outside the smell attracts you down the stairs. It has a great vibe. A typical New York restaurant. We ordered a sample plate of five different appetizers, they were all fantastic. I ordered there special veal, it was big enough for two .It was cooked perfectly and it was so tender no fork was necessary. There pasta was some of the best I have ever tasted. Service was over the top. It was not cheap, but worth every penny. When I am back in New York it will be top of my list to eat at.

Wow. This place really impressed me when I visited. The atmosphere was fun, the food delicious(get the penne alla vodka) — however avoid the octopus, it was quite chewy. Other than that it was delicious and service was great.

Scalinatella offers excellent Italian cuisine at very high prices. We were treated to Scalinatella by dear friends who dine at the establishment frequently. Entering gets a bit complex on a busy Saturday, especially waiting at the bar if your table isn’t ready as was our case. It is a tight area and the restaurant gets quite loud. On this particular evening the service took a while to get going but eventually improved. There is definatlely a local crowd in addition to everyone else– again very busy on a Saturday. We started with their signature dish– Homemade Pappardelle with white truffle cream sauce and truffle shavings Cold Lobster with hearts of palm Dover Sole All where excellent. Scalinatella obviously has a reputation, hence the full house. Food is very good but a bit over priced for the lack of space and loudness that comes as a package on busy nights.

So overpriced it’s scary. B– quality in stuffy trappings. The dark, phony formality of this place reminds me of the original Le Cirque, circa 1982. If you want fancy Italian food in this neighborhood, there are much fresher options: Via Quadronno and Mezzaluna. They, too, will cost you a pretty penny, but you won’t feel so betrayed about it.

Execellent Italian food! It is a must try. Not a casual restaurant, so dress nice! It is a very pleasant looking restaurant and the staff treated us nice and served us quickly. Again, the food was amazingly good. The table next to us finished all their food so we didn’t feel crazy when we did the same!

Overpriced Tourist Trap… run, don’t walk away The most overpriced, loud, rude, crowded, basement I have eaten at in NYC. If you’ve made reservations — cancel them. The restaurant is all about their bottom line — cheap rent in the dingy basement must help more. Steep stairs down — wheelchair will Not fit if needed. Hostess: Rude or indifferent — hard to tell. Appears depressed about the job and argued in right front of us with the waiters about who got what tables. Table location: Avoid any table near the rear of the restaurant by the kitchen — you WILL be bumped into at least a dozen times or more during dinner. No Joke. Wine list: Not bad — decent selection. Complementary Apps: OK — but served before the party was even seated. The sparkling water was flat — from the bottle — odd. Waiter: Rattles off like 30 specials at warp speed — can’t understand what he’s saying — what is the point? Entrees: My pasta was so overcooked — like a limp Chinese Chow Fun noodle — smothered in brown sauce. Trying to get the taste of my tongue still. All I wanted was a oil and garlic sauce with fresh vegetables and end up with a thick saucy mess. My friend had the truffle pasta — $ 180. I mean you want to convince yourself it tastes good after paying up — but a congealed mess again. Desert: Ricotta cheesecake + flour-less chocolate cake. Mediocre at best — visually unappealing and taste-wise nothing. Needs a raspberry sauce to brighten it up. Atmosphere: Depressing, loud, dark and extremely crowded… Avoid. Cell Reception: Zero bars — you are in the dungeon. The bill: Run for the hills — with 2 glasses of wine you could top $ 400 easily…

This is my favorite restaurant in New York City! My group from Tallahassee have been coming here for over 17 years! I always celebrate a great evening with my Mother and Daughter for our Birthday’s at Scalinatella! The Dover Sole is the best in the world. Elvis behind the bar is always a delight! I will never miss a visit to Scalinatella when in NYC! L. Mattice– Tallahassee, FL

Had a really nice dinner here at the last minute. We were seated right away(2 of us) despite the place being packed. They brought us out some bread and a few appetizers — a seafood salad and some grilled squash. Then we had a salad with pear, orange, arugula and a few other things that was nice. The waiter pretty much recited the entire menu to us. I heard him say ‘grilled octopus’ and figured I would have that. My friend is gluten intolerant and he came up with a pasta dish for her, which she really liked. The grilled octopus was really good and came with a tomato/olive salad. I normally strongly dislike raw tomatoes(taste/texture/everything about them) but this salad was really good! So bravo, Scalinatella, you did well.

We arrived at the restaurant at 4:45.(It opens at 5:00.) We arrived early because taking my sick mom anywhere is a hassle. We just left Sloan Kettering(Cancer Center) and predicting when we would arrive is always difficult. Our goal was to have a legendary meal. I asked if my mom could have a seat because my mom is ill. She was finding it difficult to stand up. She was tired. They angrily refused. «We are not open.» On the spot we cancelled our reservation. We spent our $ 200 at Felidia on 243 E 58th St, New York, NY10022. Great staff at Felidia. Kind. Attentive. A legendary meal. But not Scalinatella. Boycott them.

Old school, heavy, Italian food! Southern Italian style??? Not the nouvelle Italian cuisine! Service is perfectly ok, but the atmosphere is really dated. You could almost expect Don Corleone entering the front door at any time… Wine list fine but over the top expensive. In summary, not worth what you are paying for. Will not return because there are so many other Italian restaurants which are much more creative and serve more authentic food!

I was in the dentist’s chair and my hygienist, Cathy, told me that she was at Scalinatella’s while she was removing plaque from my teeth. She said that the food was unbelievable and that I had to go there. So I went there. The service was unbelievable. The food was awesome too. I enjoyed the restaurant so much that I couldn’t wait for my next plaque removal so I could get my next restaurant referral from her.

My rating may be a little high. But here it is: my starter was crispy artichoke. Fair not seasoned at all and was expecting more flavor. My main I ordered a non menu item. The pasta was fresh and amazing but sauce could have used more flavor. The ricotta cheese cake was to die for but really wished it came with more of the fruit sauce or some fresh fruit. Staff was friendly but my drink did sit empty for a while and I had to ask for more water.

Had an amazing wine with dinner called Far Niente 2012. The daily special, fettuccini with light cream sauce and black truffle was beyond amazing. Sadly for me I couldn’t eat all of it. Also, the salmon with mustard sauce was beautiful as well. Vito was Diego were great at explaining the specials so make sure you pay attention because they have many daily specials.

Really good food and waitstaff service, not 5-star because service at the bar could be improved. First, the bar… I arrived 20 min early for a reservation, and sat at the very small bar for a glass of wine… the bartender barely made an effort to even recognize me because he was chatting with other staff, but after 5 min I piped up and asked to see a wine list. He was not trying to be helpful at all, but when another patron came up and said they were eating at the bar(aha!), he was all smiles, helpful suggestions, and snack bowls. He warmed up again really only when I was going to pay and when I pointed out that Morgan Freeman just walked in. At that point he was more chatty, nicer, more attentive. When my friend arrived, they cleared a table and sat us near the door and Morgan Freeman which was great. Next, the food… they handed us menus, and immediately proceeded into a monologue of specials which all sounded wonderful, but anyone with ADD is not going to last through it… he must have rattled off 15 things with detailed descriptions… and after all that I mentioned I’m vegetarian and he said, well, we can make anything you like(score!). That was a relief and wonderful, and also slightly overwhelming because well, the possibilities are endless! Between us we settled on a caesar salad, one of the fish specials, and pasta with truffles/white wine/vegetables. Punchline: Everything was delicious — you cannot go wrong with the food. Waitstaff was superb. Keep your eyes peeled for big time stars(check the first table on your left when you walk in).

If you’re looking for hugh quality italian food, this is the place for you. The service is absoulitly one of a kind making you feel like you’re the most important person there. Also this restaurant is a scene you’re sure to bump into a celebrity or someone famous. Whatever dish you are in the mood for, it can be customized to your liking here. I loved the truffle pasta and the scalinatella salad but my favorite thing here was the tiramisu and italian cheesecake. They have a great drink/wine/alcohol menu. Try the chamomile grappa.

Solid Italian food. I think it’s way too expensive for what it is but they do what they do really well. The service is pretty good too, although they do pretend that they know everyone who walks in which is weird but whatever.
