Salvation Army

I support many Food Banks and Salvation Army Corps/​places different towns and different states! Glad every I donate (grocery coupons, animal art with sayings to support Food Bank and Salvation Army, dollars), all used to help the children!
Today is thirteen year mark of September 11, 2001! We remember and never forget! God Bless America! God bless the USA! God bless my friends in New York! Granted me never yet been to Empire State, but I can still call Empire State as friends! EXCELSIOR, Ever Upward! Indeed, EXCELSIOR to my friends of New York! God bless my friends of Empire State
Now is maybe six days (September 17, 2014) since me try write this! I thank the people that voted USEFUL and COOL, however, I see one vote of FUNNY! How can a tribute to the heroes of New York, the people of New York/​Empire State be funny! There nothing funny about the events of September 11, 2001! To the five so far that voted USEFUL and voted COOL, I thank them! I know some my reviews, such Sheraton in Sacra may be funny but there nothing funny about the events of September 11, 2001!

They have a separate entrance for people who are just dropping off donations. There was no wait for me at all.

Here is what I know about the Salvation Army. Brad Pitt’s mom is a member of the Salvation Army and his brother is a Goodwill ambassador.
I know Brad Pitt still has ties to The Salvation Army.
I know Goodwill and The Salvation Army are not the same organization but do similar things.

I know they do good to help the less fortunate of society. Other than making donations and shopping in thrift stores I do not have any other frame of reference for The Salvation Army.
This is The head quarters for the Salvation Army of Greater, New York. Like most non profits they have many volunteers and they are doing their best. The Salvation Army takes donations as I am sure you know. What you may not know is that they also have a truck for pick up of your gently used furniture.
I have been trying to donate furniture for 2 weeks and it seems impossible.
I am starting to think the truck is non existent and they make it up to keep you calling. We need to get new furniture long story but my husband says we must donate it and he refuses to throw it out since it is good furniture. I tried calling the 800 number. Nobody ever answers and I tried for 2 weeks straight. I finally got a security guard on the phone after hours who said since they are the only organization that makes pick ups of used furniture it is difficult to get through. Try calling at 7:30 am. I did and still can’t get through. I tried calling individual stores and the head quarters. Literally each time I call I am told no that is the wrong number and I am given yet another number to call all which never picks up. The people on the phone are courteous and try so hard to be patient and helpful but the organization seems to be too big to actually work at least in terms of their truck pick up service.

This is NOT a thrift store. It is the executive headquarters for Salvation Army.

Sal’s Boutique… when I first came to NewYork from Chicago… way back in the 80’s…I was living in Greenpoint then and had just started a new job & was trying to furnish my studio. I met with Daisy an old friend from High School for lunch at her apartment in Queens… she had migrated 5 years earllier and was working as a Dieteitian in the city. I immediately took a liking at her place… elegantly furnished. was really impressed… her décor was warm & cozy… mostly antique furnitures… I love antiques… most of the furniture I left back home was a collection of a lifetime… and I had to leave it all. I was hoping I’ll take my time and furnished my place here in due time…

I have since found some treasures there… My Amish Oak accent chairs, each piece of lumber is cut, shaped, sanded & stained by hand. unique piece that will last a lifetime… I still have it… My Mahogany Jewelry Armoire… Set of Lamps and a distressed solid Oak Hardwood desk… and a whole set of Antique Silverware by Oneida… all at a fraction of the cost… at Sal’sBoutique…fancy name for Salvation Army…

To be completely honest, I have no idea what the Salvation Army does aside from its thrift shops for charity or why it needs its own uniformed army, and as far as I’m concerned, the only thing that comes to mind when walking by their 14^th street location is «Holy Architectural Albatross, Batman!». Seriously, it’s f’ugly on ‘roids. For that alone, this place loses 2 stars.
In addition to its assault on aesthetics, it houses some pretty shady characters on its steps at night that always seem to want to strike up a conversation with you as you walk by. Who the hell wants to talk to some angry drunk chick at 3am? Those shady dudes do, apparently. This one time, I gave a guy a dollar and my pack of smokes, only to be insulted nine ways from Sunday (is that the expression?) as I turned around and yelled back «well F you then!».

let’s take a second from this review to revel in the beauty of grade-​A New York moment.
*sigh*
I should’ve taken back the dollar. No good deed goes unpunished = minus 3 stars.
But then I find out that they provide all kinds of services for the less fortunate so that they don’t have to go hungry/​sleep outside/​feel abandoned by God and/​or society. That’s what their army is for: it fights against the disenfranchisement of the poor. At least I think so. In any case they get much props for doing that, and I’m happy that over the last decade and change I haven’t let the shady people on the outside deter me from donating to the fantastic-​ness going on inside. Plus 2 stars!
Moral of the story: they get props for what they do, but stay away from that stretch of asphalt at night.

I pretty much always find something to buy when I’m at a thrift shop-​but this place was so empty! maybe I just caught them on a bad day-​but there was just a bunch of crap really. One thing I like is the prices here-​it is one of the better priced Salvation armies… I will definetly go back since I am always in the area, but I won’t expect to find thrift treasure here.

Decent sized thrift store. Obviously you have to have some free time to shop here, as the gems are usually well hidden. If you spend awhile browsing you will usually find something great and unique for a low price. Great if you are on a budget or just love thrift and vintage clothing.
