History

Established in 2013.

When Master Scuba Diving Trainer Raul first arrived in New York City, he was concerned that scuba diving would be limited to indoor pools. Little did he know that the diving opportunities in and around New York are almost limitless! He now teaches courses in dry suit diving and wreck diving, as well as offering trips to the many dive sites and wrecks located in tri-​state waters. Raul looks forward to sharing the joys of diving with many more students at Rey Diving!

Raul started scuba diving in Cozumel, Mexico in 1996 and quickly became an assistant instructor in 1997. Since then, he has taken pride in providing high-​quality scuba training for all levels of students interested in recreational scuba diving. Raul is currently a Master Scuba Diving Trainer and holds a degree in marine environmental science from SUNY Maritime College that has shaped his fascination of underwater world and his commitment to sharing its beauty with others. I just completely the confined water portion of my certification, and I could not recommend Raul more! He was incredibly patient, and explained things fully so I felt comfortable and confident in the exercises we needed to complete.
I was very nervous to begin training as I had only been snorkeling years ago, but Raul is so nice and made me feel very safe trying this new sport. I would highly recommend him, and would go back to him a heart beat. Thank you Raul!!!

Rey Diving was perfect for me! Raul was incredibly kind and patient with me. I didn’t know if Scuba Diving would be right for me, but all my anxiety disappeared after my training with Raul. He explained everything thoroughly, never rushed me, and made me feel safe. Rather than being anxious about my upcoming trip, I couldn’t be more excited now! If you have any hesitancy about diving like I did, go to Rey Diving!
Also, the facility and equipment were superb! The entire experience really exceeded my expectations!

I really enjoyed this class. Raul is AWESOME — very patient and thorough. He showed up on time and very prepared. The facility is great and super convenient. Raul has all the equipment that you need to learn — including wetsuits. The pool is around 80 degrees, but you still get chilly since you’re in it for awhile without moving much. Highly recommend Rey Diving.

Raul was a fantastic instructor. He was as patient, helpful, and friendly as you could hope for an instructor to be. I highly recommend him to anyone.
We also found other aspects of our arrangement with Raul to be exceptionally convenient. Most importantly, he provided all the equipment we needed, unlike nearly every other service I spoke with, who force you to buy lots of gear when you train with them. (As a beginning diver, I have no interest in keeping all that gear in my small closet and then trying to TRAVEL with it – I’ll just rent, thanks.)
Another big plus was that we were able to do the online training at our own pace on our own time, and then we did the pool dives with Raul all in one day.

I completed the confined water portion of my open water diver certification with Raul at Rey Diving. The experience could not be any better. We started off with a quiz of the eLearning materials before Raul geared me up with everything I needed (I had no equipment save for a pair of swim trunks). I chose not to wear a wet suit, but they are available should you decide you want to wear one.
We then spent the next 4 – 5 hours in the pool doing all four of the confined water dives required for the open water diver certification. The experience was amazing, and the time flew by. Before I knew it, Raul sent me on my way with a brand new diver’s log and a referral card to complete my open water dives when I go on vacation.
Raul is a fantastic teacher. He is very patient in answering any questions anyone in the class had. He made sure to not just answer the questions, but made sure we understood the reasoning and rationale behind why certain protocols or procedures are the way they are. He also made sure everyone in the class felt comfortable under water at all times.
I fully expect to go back to Rey Diving for more training in the future. For now, I cannot wait to get my open water sessions done for the open water diver certification.

I took the scuba diving training with Raul and it was excelent!
When I contacted him, he explained to me all what I needed to do clearly. He sent me all the information I needed on time and followed up the completion of all my assignments before the class to make sure everything was ok for the practice.
At the pool, he really takes care of you and makes you feel safe during the excercises. The equipment, including BCD, mask, tank, etc was also perfect.
I am looking forward to taking my next scuba diving class with him.

Raul is an excellent instructor! The reason I found him was because I was last minute dumped by Hoboken Dive Center and needed to complete my confined water dive a few days before my dive trip overseas. Rey Diving is not some commercial dive shop that makes you buy packages or forces you to buy equipment. He is a one on one instructor teaching from the YMCA pool currently near 14 street in NY. I really appreciate that I was trained by Raul because he really take his time to train you until you are confident. I would highly recommend him to anyone from people who maybe not that confident in speaking English (he speaks Spanish), to people with special needs, as well as people with anxiety. It was an excellent experience and will be looking to take more advanced courses from him in the future as well as join him on an overseas dive group trip that he organizes.

I recently completed the confined water (pool) portion of my certification with Raul and had a great experience. Raul is patient, thorough, engaging, and knowledgeable. I had a great day in the pool. Raul’s love of diving and teaching is palpable. I feel confident to proceed to open water training, and can’t wait to complete my certification and continue with specialized courses. I wouldn’t hesitate to complete my training with Raul at Rey Diving. He’s very down to earth and I appreciated that all of my equipment was included with the session. If you want to learn how to Scuba so you can really experience the sport and dive with great confidence, this is a great place to learn.
I just went through some skills refresh work with Reydiving. My original certifications were up in MA in 2001 – 5: navigation, wreck, enriched air, advanced, drysuit, rescue/​EFR, etc. I’ve been lucky enough to dive and train around the world.
With that I can easily say Raul and his team do what all shops should do: complete commitment to student comprehension of safe diving practices and assurance that students demonstrate solid skills in the water. And the students are always comfortable — that is a great combination.

I just took the pool portion of my open water certification with Raul and it was an incredible experience. He made the seemingly intimidating course much less scary and confusing than I thought it would be. Raul is a very funny and kind person to learn from. His patience and easy going demeanor also make him a great instructor. I would definitely recommend contacting Raul for any diving certification you want to pursue. His prices are also very competitively priced compared to others in the area.

I took the confined-​water portion of my scuba certification with Raul at the Y on 14th St. between 6th and 7th Avenues, and he was a great instructor. He was very patient and adept at making my friend, who was feeling nervous about the whole concept of diving, feel more at ease. His class is also priced very competitively compared to the other scuba schools in Manhattan. Most other places that I researched insist that students buy their own masks, snorkels, fins, and diving boots, which can easily add another $ 100 to $ 200 to the total cost. Raul, on the other hand, has equipment that you can borrow. I’m overall very satisfied with my experience taking his class.

I had a fantastic experience with Raul and Rey Diving! I recently took a refresher course with Raul, and he was accommodating, professional, and very informative. I was on a very shortened time line for making this refresher happen, but Raul was able to offer me a spot right away, and was flexible with my timing (I had to come late because of work).
There were only 3 of us in the pool that day, so we all got a good amount of individual attention. His teaching was wonderful and I get that he would be just as good in any setting, large group or small, open water or pool. Before we got in the water he gave us very clear, precise instructions, then guided us through each step that we might encounter for any situation at the start of a dive. He always asked if we had any questions, and gave very informative answers when we did. In the water Raul was great at explaining the game plan for our skills sections, and was just as good about giving clear instructions under the water (which is SO important, and very difficult). I have been on some dives where the instructors were experienced and knowledgeable but not always totally clear with instructions, or would start moving too quickly if they started to feel comfortable with the group — Raul always moved at the same pace and would be sure to demonstrate each action we performed facing several directions so that we were all sure to understand what was happening. There were also a few moments where one of the students was having trouble with things like mask removal, but Raul was always there to lend reassurance and was very good about calmly guiding each student through our skills until all of us understood exactly what to do and then felt confident doing it.
Both above and below water Raul was patient and clear, and he encouraged us to have fun with our dive. I was very impressed with Raul’s extensive experience, travels, and interests. I strongly recommend Rey Diving — I will certainly be returning for future instruction and remain on the look out for a dive trip I can join!

I first studied with Raul a few years ago for my open water certification. After some time out of the water, I recently consulted him for some additional training. I’m very glad that I did!
Raul is extremely knowledgeable in variety of topics (equipment, marine and environmental issues, techniques), patient, and thorough. He goes into the right amount of detail when providing explanations, and always seems more than willing to answer questions. I especially appreciate that Raul is very patient. I have to admit that I am sometimes a bit of a chicken, but Raul instills confidence and remains calm and un-​annoyed! He makes sure that you do what you need to. His demonstrations are very clear and he is a great communicator under– and above-​water.
I strongly recommend Rey Diving for its high level of expertise, attention to safety and detail, and friendliness. I look forward to additional training in the future with Rey Diving.

I first met Raul on the pool portion of my open water diving certification course. We were a big group so there were two instructors. They could not have been more different.
Raul was calm and reassuring above water and, most importantly, clearly communicated information underwater when we were in such unfamiliar territory for the first time. The other instructor, and you may meet these often as you begin diving, was more interested in showing off his own diving skills than teaching you yours.
Raul is excellent at individual attention and assessment as you begin to experience breathing and becoming buoyant underwater.
After this pool class, my friends and I continued our instruction with Raul and Rey Diving, enjoying a fabulous camping weekend at Dutch Springs and meeting other students of his. He prepared us for diving in open water in Cozumel and has been our friend ever since.
My relationship with Rey Diving continues to grow. I take more courses as I have the time (up to Rescue Diver now) and Raul is always available to dive as a buddy at Dutch Springs or beyond. His curiosity and enthusiasm is unbridled and I believe we will have a long relationship both in the water and out.
He is a great instructor who excels at teaching anyone from kids to adults, beginner to advanced. His knowledge of equipment and technique is deep and up to date.
