Russo Mozzarella & Pasta

Admittedly, it was a few minutes before closing when I walked in yesterday, but I tried to be easy and fast in my order. All the same, the guy who served me… you’d think I’d mortally insulted his mother. The hostility was popping out of his eyeballs. I walked in excited for their good food, I walked out wondering where else I can go next time. The soppressata and mortadella were as good as always, but the coppa was distinctly off — something soapy, or chemical, to the aftertaste. He sliced it for me off the very end of the tube, but I dared not ask him to start a fresh one for fear he would put my neck in the slicer instead. Some days, you don’t have it in you to go through a brawl to get just basic human decency in your service in this city.

Great sandwiches! We were so delighted to eat here. You can’t go wrong. Don’t bother with the Italian bakery next door unless you’re desperate.

It is a little sad that so many people on Unilocal like Russos in the East Village. It just means that anyone who goes here either lacks any Italian culture or has never been to an Italian deli. First off let me say that Russos in Park Slope is wonderful, I am not sure what happened to the Russos in Manhattan. I paid over $ 10 for a chicken cutlet hero, with muzz, peppers, and oil and vinegar for my gf… I can tell you they didn’t use Italian bread… It looked like those frozen loafs you get at Fresh Direct and throw in the freezer. The chicken cutlet was not fresh either especially since I went right in the morning… I watched in horror as they plopped a piece of chicken cutlet on a plate sprinkled some muzz and microwaved it. The soggy chicken cutlet with sprinkled muzz was then put together on this dough ball of bread. The sandwich was about 6 inches long (enough to feed a small child). I am sad and angry that people think this is an authentic Italian deli, and continue to promote such atrocities upon a culture that is rich with delicious food. I hope the reviewers change as much as Russos in the East Village.

Yes, I want everything in the store: and unfortunately, I come when I am not staying at
a facility that has a refrigerator=and never seem to be able to get back to take
some of the fresh ravioli back with me on the airplane. Sigh. I have admired
and gone into the shop for YEARS-​because it’s next door to Vennerios, whose
pastries I don’t need to refrigerate. Never thought about just buying a sandwich:
it is true they are not so friendly, but who cares. One of these days I’d like to
try one of the Pastas: maybe i can find a stove and cook.

You want everything in the Store! The boys are nice enough but it’s all about Fidel-​he is the greatest. Cold cuts-​fresh mozzarella and now they make prepared food. Wish there was more variety but what I have gotten is great. Try the artichokes they make-​yummy! Sometimes ravioli dough is too thick but almost all the pastas melt I your mouth.

Great homemade pastas and sauces. Great cheese, antipasti and italian cold cuts selection. Love! They have gluten free ravioli!!! Yay!!!

i rarely write reviews but thought it was important to let all of gluten free people know that they have gluten free ravioli here. I didn’t see plain gluten free pasta, but maybe they carry those sometimes as well.
i wish that they didn’t use artificial colors in their pasta, i don’t think it’s necessary.

Terrific fresh mozzarella, don’t buy the mass-​produced stuff from the grocery store. Also great selection of fresh pastas, amazing prices, also a bunch of great olive oils.
Places like this make the East Village what it is — filled with interesting, niche, best-​of-​class, entrepreneur-​owned businesses. at reasonable prices (although that is changing.). Please give them a try.

Overrated. Not so friendly service. maybe If i went there all the time. The Burrata was out of this world, but that was imported from Italy. The sliced mortadella was about average. The prosciutto was good prosciutto again imported. EVERY pasta I purchased, a lb each of Homemade and Frozen Tortellini. Gnocchi and Walnut and gorgonzola ravioli was awful. The ravioli filling was less than desirable and I love walnut gorgonzola combos. The Tortellini fell apart, the gnocchi was rubber.
I know how to make and cook fresh and frozen pastas so It was not my inability to cook. I was so dissapointed that I will not return if ever in the Village.

Russo’s makes a great sandwitch! I highly recaend the «Caprese» prepared with fresh mozzarella, sun dried tomato, basil leaves and drizzled with olive oil.
Russo’s sells outstanding mozzarella, raviolis, sauces, sausages and so forth.

3 cheers for Russos. As a hard judge of homemade sauce I love their tomato sauce, their bricks of Romano, their marinated artichokes, and fresh pasta like their manicotti. Feast out with Russos, they don’t mess around.

The sandwiches may be filled with prosciutto, coppa, mozzarella, basil… but every time I bite into Russo’s sandwiches, I’m tasting love, glory and perfection. Seriously, a gold-​plated unicorn with 30 Michelin stars couldn’t conjure a better Italian sandwich.
Beautiful cuts of every salty, cured meat one can imagine. Fresh, ripe vegetables and herbs. Great array of vinegars, oils, olives and cheeses. You just can’t beat it.

Russo’s was unbelievably good. The prosciutto sandwich on the specials board was incredibly tender and flavorful.
The new updates to the interior added a lot of light. Also the new larger sandwich menu board makes me less nervous to order as I can read it clearly now.
The prices were modest given the portion size of the sub specials. Even the turkey sub, which is sometimes boring, was far from it. I would recommend Russo’s to anyone who is hungry and in the mood for delicious Italian food.

It’s so fun to stop in here when cooking for big groups… Everyone will love it. Delicious homemade pasta. Prosciutto stuffed peppers are to die for.

Handmade Ricotta ravioli and various tortellinis are divine! And their sauces are
fresh and consistently good. Haven’t had their cheese yet, but really excited to try their mozzarella.
They have pretty much everything you need to create a gourmet Italian meal at home — except fresh veggies for a salad (go around the corner to Commodities for that).
No nonsense service which I always appreciate. It’s never been super crowded and fussy when I’ve come here which is always a plus in NY.

The gem of all gems in the East Village. Russo’s is not a restaurant, but an Italian market specializing in two things: homemade pasta and cheese. WIN.
Walking into Russo’s felt like I was back in Italy. Established in 1894, Russo’s is the real deal and the closest to authentic Italian you are gonna get in NY. It’s a tiny place right next to Venieros on 1^st and 11^th, with a few large refrigerators housing lots of cheese, and fresh pasta. They have an entire fridge devoted to fresh ravioli with fillings including sausage, goat cheese, spinach, mushroom, butternut squash, lobster and pumpkin. They have a large variety of different pastas, gnocchi, and even whole wheat options.
Russo’s also has imported olive oils, marinated olives, as well as pepperoni, sausage and anchovies behind the counter. And just like authentic markets in Italy, they have a small menu of sandwiches. The Italiano or Caprese are a crowd favorite.
For my first Russo’s trip, I bought fresh pasta (only used half of it tonight), a ¼ pound of ricotta, and ¼ pound of their house blend of grated cheese made with parmesan, asiago and pecorino. All for $ 9. I made an arugula-​basil pesto for dinner with their pasta, and topped it with pine nuts, fresh arugula and dollops of their ricotta cheese, which was so fresh, flavorful and outrageously delicious. Ricotta takes any pasta dish to the next level.
Next trip I’m trying their ravioli and bufala mozzarella. While I usually go to Eataly for fresh pasta and cheeses, Russo’s is my new go-​to. It is even more authentic, feels Italy, and is half the price.

Russo (not Russo’s) is a gnarly little spot run by a couple nice dudes on the Friday evening I dropped in for some butternut squash ravioli and half-​pound of their very-​good mozzarella. Stop in before entertaining or just to pack the fridge/​freezer for a satisfying night’s meal or two.
Russo illuminated two Unilocal issues:
1. It ranks 7^th on Unilocal results list for a ‘Russo’s’ query in its own zipcode, with the BK location first and some other less– or even non-​reviewed spots in between.
2. I understand that Unilocal’s logo is red, but 5 stars should not be red, it should be green. Elsewhere in ratings red indicates ‘stop, do not go here’, yet here it indicates ‘as good as it gets’.

Fuck the celeb places, like Babbo (garbage). This place kills. Food is simple and traditional Italian. Made in-​house unless I am wrong. Sandwiches destroy all the chains as well.
Seriously, eat here. Expound on the beauty of it…
