At least one of the people working here is unnecessarily mean and self-centered, and quite possibly suffering from a serious mental disorder. Some background: I live nearby, and have seen people leave books, clothes, etc on the stairs next to this store many times. I think it’s great to leave little«free shops» like that around– it makes it easy to clean house, keep things out of the landfill, and foster a sense of community. I thought I’d contribute by leaving a few things up for grabs on that stairway. The door has one of those metal things over it, it’s not obstructing anyone, and as I said before, I have seen people leave things there many times before. Since I have a fun size Manhattan apartment, I pushed myself to give a few things away. Then I went upstairs to grab a few other things before going about my day. When I came back out, someone who looked like a crazy homeless person and was unable to communicate was throwing my free store into the street. Where people were trying to drive. I was very disturbed and wondered if I should call the police because this person was clearly out of control and needs help. Other passerby were also disturbed. Even the taxi driver seemed very uncomfortable, and he had the protection of the car. An unfortunate woman who also works there explained the situation to me: their business is struggling, and apparently they get in trouble with the city if people leave stuff on that stairway that looks abandoned. Fair enough. They could have moved the stuff elsewhere and put up a sign asking that people please leave that stairway clear, instead of causing a scene and acting outright hostile and threatening. I can see why they’re going out of business. That was hours ago and I still feel like crying. I joined Unilocal just to let people know that they should not shop there and enable that kind of behavior. Personally, I’m glad they will be out of business soon. Someone get me a bottle of champagne here.
